I tried this one for JJH. The male lead was a little human, at least he got cookie points from me for trying to get an abused woman out of a bad situation. The female lead put her right back into it. Just to win the case. Where is our empowerment here ? No she’s not strong, she’s a terrible character.
Edit : just wrote a review myself. Hope you read it :)
Thanks for this honest review. The show triggered me a lot. There are original dramas such as Money Flower, Signal (a bit scary but quality), MiSaeng or Vincenzo (quite gory, but worth watching, just closed my eyes a few times lol). So I disagree with the person who said that because we didn’t like this drama we want « comfortable » plots. This show is just too over the top for zero reason. I have a hard time tolerating overt lack of empathy and morals in shows, but it’s even worse when it’s a legal one. Too bad, because the male lead is decent, and seems to have enough empathy to try and get an abused woman out of a dark situation, only for his opponent to trap her right back into it, just to win. I liked the male lead, not the female lead. I don’t see her as « strong » but as horrible. I wouldn’t mind if she did this to only horrible people (like Vincenzo), but that’s not the case. Next !

I sincerely respect people who drop dramas because they stick to their values. I’ve decided to drop it after finishing episode 4, because of personal values as well. Thank you for being true to yourself, that is so refreshing.

if you don't like dramatic dramas you're probably not into this genre. i used to hate it too but i have learned…
I absolutely love makjangs, but it just depends. You know, something like MONEY FLOWER to avenge your family yes. But all this bullying in PENTHOUSE, no. Maybe it depends on the storyline.
You were better than me. I tried to watch it twice, and twice I couldn’t get past the 2nd episode. My general rule is to wait until after the 3rd one to decide to watch or drop a drama if I’m not hooked from the start. After seeing the high ratings in Korea, I thought I might be missing something, since I tend to like a lot of what they like, plus it generally means a lot culturally when a drama has this much of an impact locally. I even wrote on the page to give me something to convince me to watch it. This drama is very exhausting to watch. A « fan » wrote that it’s not for the easily offended and very sensitive, but I disagree. It’s way deeper than that, it’s not for people who are highly empathetic or reasonably logical. I love makjangs but I found this one so trash and the reasons behind all of this evil absolutely idiotic. It didn’t start with an affair, or robbery, but because of opera singing ???? Are you seriously fighting over a damn award at 15 and slicing someone’s throat and putting their blood on you to make them look bad.... just to be the diva of the year ??? I can’t.
Thanks for your honest review. No it’s not realistic. The rich don’t fight over an award for opera singing, they have bigger fish to fry. This drama is a nuisance. I tried to like and watch it twice but dropped it twice. I wrote a comment on the page asking anyone to convince me to give it a shot, because it’s a huge hit in Korea and I might be missing something. I guess it’s really bad... right ?
Wait, this drama is a mega hit in Korea, the 2nd season is an even bigger hit. I tried to watch it twice and still couldn’t see the appeal and dropped it. Am I alone in this ? I always feel when I don’t like a Korean hit that I’m missing out on something symbolically significant to the country’s culture. Why should I watch this drama if it’s that good, convince me.... what made you love it ?
FUN FACT: This drama was actually filmed in 2018 and was meant to be released in 2019 but got held back by 2 years…
Really ?? Ok. I’m in the middle of episode 4 and still wondering if I should or shouldn’t drop it. I would have dropped it by the 3rd episode normally but I’m seeing potential in the ML. I don’t know what to do though. The 2nd lead from the group 2PM is really bad at acting.
LOL hey sis, that was exactly me when I discovered this world. May I suggest you check my favorite Kdrama list…
Hahahahaahaha you’ve reached a point of no return. You’re trapped in Kdramaland forever considering your list. You made me smile today. I’ll check Out SIMTAFan the title is intringuing. Thanks for sharing and for accepting my friend request !!
I started admiring this young actor when I first saw his outstanding talent in *Full House and A Love to Kill*…
Exact same story here. He’s an excellent actor. A Love To Kill proved how gifted he is as an actor on top of being such a great show man, although that drama was waaay too tragic for me (watched it until the end but won’t watch it again.... cried too much).
Where do I start. Sooooo. I have just discovered C-drama, K-drama and Kpop. It all happened Sept 2019 when I happened…
LOL hey sis, that was exactly me when I discovered this world. May I suggest you check my favorite Kdrama list and maybe check out the most recent dramas first (2015-2021), but I’m sure you’ll appreciate the oldies too. There are a few classics on the list. Also I have tips on how to select your fave dramas on my profile, if you care... there are zero rules, just guidelines. Currently watching « Welcome 2 Life » with Rain, and « Vincenzo » (which I’m sure will be considered a classic) with Seong Joong Ki.
If I had to suggest dramas to try out right now it would be MONEY FLOWER, it’s a « makjang » (crazy dramas, crazy plots), the classic HEALER (with my now biggest crush), and another HUGE classic « Full House » (romantic comedy) with Rain it’s an oldie but every Korean on the planet knows this drama. Much love!!
Wow thanks for writing this, it will save me hours of stress. I don’t deal with affair-related dramas, they…
Yeah I agree. I think I should have added, that I LOVE makjangs (super overdramatized) except when it comes affairs, teenage bullying or highly dark relationships. The 1st makjang I watched got me addicted but it taught me never to touch such themes again with a makjang style. Unless the people are uber rich, extravagant, and there’s major humour in it... in other words, leads people can’t relate to. You see I watch Vincenzo and it’s one of the best dramas ever, and a makjang. But because it’s so far from our everyday lives (legal/ mafia), very few people can identify with the leads. Same for Fantasy and Sci-Fi makjangs.
The problem with affair-related makjang is that it deals with « everyday families » in most cases when they portray them. This is why, although they are not realistic, people identify with the leads and you end up having a section filled with « this is so realistic » type of comments. People rarely separate reality from fiction when the leads are not very far from them in terms of circumstances (middle class or upper middle class, working dad/mom, big apartment 2 to 3 kids etc). That’s what saddens me but we are all free to watch what we want to anyway. I hope you see my point.
Hated the ending. Since I hated how Doctor Foster end.Tae Oh is despicable and I have zero sympathy on him. Everything…
Wow thanks for writing this, it will save me hours of stress. I don’t deal with affair-related dramas, they seem to promote gender war more than coming together. I wondered why it was forbidden to minors now I can see why. I keep reading « this is realistic », umm not sure most couple live that extreme type of life. Also, as a woman in her 30s I can tell you that happy and faithful couples are just as realistic, they just put in the work. Those dark series literally affect your psyche and alter your perception of the world, I got sick for weeks after watching my 1st dramatic makjang. It was definitely well produced but definitely detrimental to anyone’s mental health. I tried PENTHOUSE twice as well, couldn’t get past 2 episodes. It’s like all of them are evil wolves. This drama seems to be even more extreme, given the age restriction.
