I have just read all three books in the novel and I don’t recommend reading ahead of the series. Reasons: 1. There are quite a bit of twists and turns that would not be fun anymore once you know the details 2. The novel is told from XiaoYao’s point of view only, so the series is actually much more multifaceted, and rich 3. It might actually be a good thing to read at the same speed with the series, as there are some details the series need to cut down to keep the story length, but I am not sure who would have the will power to stop reading when you know everything is already there
I think for keeping the story short, they have cut the part where Jing showed that while he’s not as physically strong as some other, he’s a master strategist and disguise.
In the story Jing’s plan was very elaborate when he used both his keen observations and magic power to create 2 decoys that not only look but also behave exactly like him and XY. Then sneaked through the king’s army who completely locked down that town with sheer power. This was a “mad chess move” by Xiao Yao but Jing made it possible with little time allowed for thinking.

I will be one of the ones rioting as it would prove again that good boy won’t get the girl, even if he’s hot, richer than the king, smarter than almost everyone, has a kind heart of gold and doesn’t hesitate to choose her over power.

In the series, I think they used CGI to make hime super skinny to fit into the beggar character.
