with they recent shutdown of Dramafever, I am low on dramas. I just put this one on to try it... in the opening credits I started thinking why do I know that guy.... OOOOO it is Hao Mei from Love O2O. Plus Janice Wu who I loved from My Amazing Boyfriend. Hoping it is good. I really want to like it, since I like both of the main actors from other things.
I am sure I am not the only one that is sad about losing Dramafever so abruptly. I really needed something cute to watch. Thankfully this drama has started to grow on me. I am also starting to notice the improvement in the Viki originals too. I have thought each one was a little better than the one before it. Hopefully that trend continues.
Chinese dramas really do have the best cinematography. Yang Mi is pretty much the Goddess of everything. .... I adored The Eternal but special effects being what they were, I can see how it would not appeal to everything. The Eternal Love was the first role I ever saw Xing Zhao Lin in, so maybe that is why my opinion differs, but TEL is def my favorite of his roles. I was so in love with him after watching that. Princess Agent second, then ICHY last. I don't know Nikki Wu, but Dylan Wang is my favorite thing from MG, so I can't agree on that one. I thought DW's newness worked for that character. Of course, the only other version of that I have seen is the Kdrama BOF with Lee Min Ho, so his portrayal of that character is the only one I have to compare DW to. The role I wish they had taken more time cast was the Huaze Lei character.
It has stayed pretty light and positive despite the medical issue. I am a little afraid it will become more sad/serious toward the end, so I put it on hold, for now.
On Acting: I think a blanket statement that all the acting is "amaturish" is a bit harsh. To a degree I will agree about everyone except: the Dao Ming Si character. The actor playing DMS was always able to draw me into his emotions, no matter how silly or dramatic the situation was. As much as I liked the portrayal of DMS, I equally disliked the portrayal of Huaze Lei. The HL character was so important to the story, I wish they had cast that role differently ... I have previously only watched the Korean Boys Over Flowers version of this story, so that may come into play here. On The Dubbing: I have seen so much worse, I didn't even notice this one was dubbed tbh. On the Length: I am pretty used to long dramas. This one dragged a bit toward the end. It felt like they were repeating the same set backs in the relationship over again. I don't remember if it was the same in the Korean BOF, it has bee too long since I watched it. On Kissing: I don't think there was a lot of chemistry between the leads, in general. I thought the lead actress was adorable and funny and as far as her portrayal of Shan Ci character, I didn't hate it. However, I think the lack of chemistry was on her side. I also didn't sense any chemistry between her and Huaze Lei either. The Fighting and Product Placement: I just have to say that I love product placement in general, as a way to get in advertising without having to watch an annoying commercial with annoying music at a loud volume. I usually prefer to watch comedy, so the funny product placements are comical to me. Maybe if I watched more Chinese dramas it would bother me, but so far I am ok with it.
For now I only like seo Kang Joon performance! The premise wasn’t bad but too much time in flash black can discourage…
Agree. In general, I dislike long flashbacks. I am usually much happier when the drama dedicates no more than half an episode to back story/"flashback". Later, they can always thrown in a couple minutes or two long flash backs to add info, when needed. I have also been ok when dramas have given a short flash back at the beginning of every episode. When the "flash back is several episodes long, I want to fast forward. I know someone will bring this up.... but obviously dramas like the reply series are their own thing. The main story is happening in the past, so I feel like the "present day" stuff if more like a flash forward, than the rest being a long flashback.
I have never done this before, but I couldn't take it. At ep. 43, I skipped ahead to the last ep to see what kind of ending it has. I just didn't want to go through another 20 ep just to have a tragic or ambiguous ending. Now that I know what happens, I will go back and watch those 20 or so episodes.
I am glad someone mentioned Maurice. I keep thinking that they could do a modern Chinese adaptation of this drama…
I don't know if I could see Hans Zhang Han as the bookish Cecil. Vanness Wu could definitely play the role. He is older. He is so rock and roll, though, that I would be worried I would start shipping him, even as Cecil.
No doubt about it. Vanness Wu and Mao Xiaotong were really amazing in this drama. This was my first time watching Vanness Wu in anything. He definitely has charisma. I need to find another drama or movie with him in it to watch. I watched Mao Xiatong in Love 020 and she was really adorable in that. Even though she was the villain in PWY, I still was able to empathize with the character to a degree.
I only started this because someone recommended I watch it as an introduction to Shawn Dou. Wow. I have barely slept the last couple days because I can not stop watching. So much action. I sometimes have a hard time watching "action" because it seems like much of the action is unnecessary stuff thrown in to dress up an otherwise thin plot . This is not that kind of action. Everything that is happening seems to serve to develop characters, relationships, or move the plot. It was a little hard to get through ep. 24 and 25, but in a I need to skip ahead to find out how this comes out, sort of way. I am up to ep. 38, at the moment and still wanting to see what happens next.

I have been Marathoning Princess Agents the last few days. omo. What have you done to me. It is so good, I can't stop watching. Hoping this does not end in tragedy. On Shawn Dou. Oh yes, I like that casting. .... Now for Cecil and Aunt Charlotte. For Cecil, it needs to be someone slender that looks like he has never done a days work in his life. I keep thinking Deng Lun. I know he might be a bit too popular to play the unlikable character but I can imagine him being snobbish and fussy. Can you think of anyone else you like for that part? Charlotte is an interesting character. She seems a bit prudish, at first. Later, I get the impression that in her youth she did not make the safe traditional choices. I don't have anyone in particular in mind for that role yet.
I have never been a fan a wuxia dramas. In fact, the only one that I've ever watched was Princess Agents and I…
I agree, that is where I think it is going, but I do not ship them. Asian dramas love to have the guy end up with that close friend or first love though. If he really is going to end up with her, I am guessing that he is actually not aware of his feelings yet. He knows she is precious to him, but probably thinks of her as family. The reason I do not think he is 'aware' of his feelings: 1 He was excited about taking Nalan Yan Ran as a wife. I don't think he will even consider taking a different wife until he feels that situation is really resolved in that 3 year period. 2 He seemed to genuinely enjoy the 'attention' of the Little Medicine Fairy. - He did explain himself to her, but I think it was more about knowing she would report it to his father. 3 He offered to give her advice to hook up with the guy she likes without any hint of jealousy. -He has asked her if she was jealous before, but I think he means jealous like a friend would be. Jealous that he had a love life but she didn't or jealous that your friend doesn't have as much time to hang out any more...
Even though I don't think there is much chance, I am currently shipping him with the Little Medicine Fairy. That may change as the story moves forward. Little Medicine Fairy is too adorable. I need her to have a love interest. I am currently shipping the little sister with another member of their group. Maybe if one of their group starts getting interested in his little sister, it will spark some jealousy and then I will feel different. Right now I am not feeling the chemistry for that couple.
Is there anywhere safe we can watch this now?
