I think Silent is more of a human drama than a romance. The breakup between Minato and Tsumugi in episode 5 might seem long and tedious, but it's definitely needed. I'm glad the scriptwriter focused the entire episode on the complexity and delicacy of Minato and Tsumugi's relationship. There was a scene where Sou lamented with his high school teacher about him being the reason that Minato and Tsumugi broke up, and the teacher said that Sou doesn't truly know what went on during those 8 years he was absent in their lives. In the same way, we audience did not know about their relationship, and episode 5 shed light on it for us. I walked away from watching the episode with a more profound understanding of these two characters, and it's just so satisfying.
The fact that Tsumugi chose not to tie her ponytail was an interesting choice given that Minato told her that…
You said everything I'd love to convey so eloquently about this episode. I also thought episode 5 was so masterfully written and beautifully acted. It alone encapsulates everything I love about Jdrama: thoughtful, unassuming, real, and very sincere, with great attention to detail. It's definitely my favorite episode of Silent up until now.
The tension was so strong in episode 3. These two boys' chemistry is on fire (has been since their first eye contact in episode 1... that moment keeps on lingering in my mind, lol). I personally feel that they have the best chemistry out of the 4 couples presented in MBS's Tunku line-ups. My biggest gripe about some JBLs is that even though the storylines are so darn good, their actors always seem to hold back, and it kills the chemistry and momentum for me. This couple is so natural and good at their micro-expressions that I'm really invested in their story, even when I know that I might get my heart broken at the end... Oh, but that kiss, lol. We're not gonna talk about it XD. BUT I've heard that there might be a proper intimate scene in this drama (0.o). Don't quote me on it though.
is there any english translation for the novel?... I would like to read it...
Sadly, there isn't any available translation of the novel. There are some spoilers from the novel on Reddit though (under boyslove subreddit), if you're interested. I don't know if we're allowed to give out Reddit link or not here, but a quick Google search can get you there.
I had only seen him in Eien no Kinou but was immediately captured. He has very soulful and gorgeous eyes, and his acting is good (the little I have seen :D). He's indeed a very promising young actor.
Very enjoyable first episode. It's the usual underdog rising to the top drama, with the 'don't give up' attitude, a genius resurfacing after trauma... I really like the incorporation of the gaming and vinyl toy industries.
UGH i hate love triangles like this. Why did Minato even tried to have a relationship with Tsumugi?!
Right... Minato really sets himself up in a pickle. I got the feeling that he had always liked Tsumugi since high school but decided not to act on it because he knew Tsumugi and Sou liked each other. Imagine his insecurity now that Sou is back in the picture and that the reason for the breakup is a freaking illness. No matter how you look at it, Minato is in for a lot of heartbreak. I don't sympathize with him much, though. He knew the risk of being together with Tsumugi.
I've been so busy with life, but I just had to log into MDL to give praise to this drama. This is a quality, well-written drama of 2022. The cinematography is marvelous, the acting commendable, the music is on-point, and the dialogue is top-notch. Oh, how I love the dialogue in this show! The play on words is so satisfying, even to a non-Japanese speaker like me. Many thanks to IrozukuSubs for the exceptional translations!!!
Yuma’s personality and demeanors are absolutely attractive, no wonder Riku fell for him. The chemistry between Riku and Yuma was so strong that I felt sorry for Satsuki. Girl is setting herself up for some heartbreaks. Side note, Fujiwara is playing his character brilliantly. When he’s with Satsuki, he’s this confident and thoughtful man, but when he’s with Yuma, he allows himself to be a bit more yielding and delicate. The dynamic between these 3 characters was definitely the highlight of ep 4.
I was so obsessed with him during high school, after watching Majo no Jouken, SOS, news no onna… sad to see him retiring from acting, but glad to know he’s still with the industry
This feels less jdrama but more korean style drama (less thematic but more on the style approach) which to my…
This! So I wasn’t alone in thinking that this drama feels the least Japanese to me, and I’m not complaining, especially when it comes to romance. I enjoyed the longer screen time they give for the characters to ‘feel’ things and for us audience to submerge our emotions and identify with the characters. This is an upgrade on the Jdrama scene and I’m very glad they’re starting to change. The cinematography is also a lot better as well.
My heart started aching while watching 4th ep. 😂Nitta sensei had made a bad choice. Masaki, Sae, Minami and…
I’m in for the ride, but honestly don’t know how this drama can end well. Practically every character in this show is so flawed. Nitta is written as sarcastic, distrustful, and cowardly. I wonder if years of parental neglect and feeling inferior to his older brother had shaped him into a person who judges silently while still tries to be pleasant on the outside. In short, he constantly suppresses his true self to cater to the environment. I do feel bad for what happened to him though as a teacher, he should have been more aware anyways.
Thank god the show didn't drag for episodes Kawahara's lie to Sui and they resolved it by the end of episode 3.
Right! The reason they gave for her lying actually made sense, at least to me, lol. I thought I would be very annoyed at Kawahara, but half way through the episode, I can relate to her a bit. More than anything, Kawahara is directionless and entitled. Mayu’s way of encouraging her was so sweet! What I truly am interested in finding out is Sui’s backstory. He’s always been so kind, understanding, good at his job… but those qualities alone make him a bit bland. Despite being the main character, he’s one I feel like I know very little about so far… well, besides the fact that he lives in a very nice apartment, is super organized, and can cook well, haha.
This drama has been a delightful surprise for me, the script, music, actings, pacing… everything was on point. Even the title is aptly fitting. In fact, I can’t get over how clever that title is. Prism can be referred to as a transparent object with refracting surfaces that can separate a white light into a spectrum of colors. How befitting it is with Riku (and Satsuki’s father) being bisexual characters in this drama. Not to mention that this drama shows us the many aspects and layers of emotional complexity that a person can hold. Fragility, growth, perspective, acceptance, healing… I think about all these things while watching this. An absolute delight, no doubt. Contemplative, reflective, healing and thoughtful… I hope the drama continues this lovely sensibility until the end.
I’m enjoying this drama way more than I thought. The element of mystery is really intriguing, and the intimate scenes were done quite tastefully. I did read ahead on the manga and… well, I’m interested in how far along they will adapt this drama.
episode 4 was the best so far imo. that last scene was amazing, felt like like an intense melo. this might be…
I agree about ep 4 being the best. Many things were explained and this drama wastes no time moving things forward at the speed of a rocket. And I heard that last scene was trending on Jp twitter for some time. Surprisingly, even when this drama is dark, there are some heart fluttering moments, and I remain stupidly optimistic for a happier ending… but from here on out, things will definitely be VERY messy. This drama is one of my favs this season. Haven’t been this hooked on a show for quite some time. One episode a week is such torture.
I only skimped through some parts of the Korean version, but it seems like they changed Koizumi character (the salesman) in the Japanese version into the new hire at the FL's workplace. Korean version also takes more liberation in adding new characters and storylines. FL in the K-version is calmer while the FL in the J-version is super energetic and smiley (I ADORE the FL in the J-version though, she's just the cutest). It seems to me that the K-version will add more slight romantic scenes while the J-version has at most 1 scene hinting at the salesman having probably a crush on the FL.
Second episode continued to deliver, and if the rest of the drama keeps up this pace, this drama might be one of my favorites this season. One of the reasons might just be that everyone communicates at an appropriate pitch and tone, lol. For once, I didn't hear people shouting or being unrealistically loud or overly enthusiastic XD. I really enjoy listening to the actors' voices in this drama. It's nice to know more about Mayu and the reason for her lack of communication skills. Despite it all, I adore her personality: a little bit rough around the edges, but thoughtful and competent. Her klutzy side apart from work is also very endearing. Mayu and her grandfather are just the cutest <3. One thing though, I hope the drama won't turn Kawahara into an annoying 2nd FL. She's starting to look that way to me at the end of this episode.
So I guess the real story is starting now. This drama surprises me week after week, in a good way. I don’t think we know why Yukino-sensei died right? The biggest suspect imo is Usui, she’s a total creep, but wouldn’t that be too easy? So it’s already been 5 years, and the story has moved away from the school setting but I have a feeling we will be revisiting the school again at some point. Otherwise, it would be sorta pointless to make us suspect of a few other teachers from that school, unless I’m just reading too much into this, lol.
First episode was very enjoyable! It’s true when people said that this is like old school jdrama. I can already see the chemistry between the two main leads and I absolutely love the FL! That preview for next episode is very exciting :D. Btw, does anyone else think that the FL looks a lot like Suzuki Honami of old Tokyo Love Story?
