I took a detour watched a few other shows and AM BACK.
Inspite of the memory being intact .. I AM LOVING the journey .. relishing it slow and steady .. picking up in greater detail everything that I missed the first round.

Watching the Lead's faces more intently .. and looking out for that fleeting first moment when the 'feelings shift'

I found the SMLs (of the reverse harem) very well characterised and superbly portrayed by the actors ..

Annoying? I think that would be a personal response from viewers ..
IML (In My Lens) they were VERY interesting and acted as a foil for aspects of the FL's character which brought into focus her complex and layered mind and heart.

I love characterisations where two opposing thoughts and feelings can pop up and co exist and create serious tension for the audience and the character.

That poor gal is trapped in her deep seated horror of the memory of slitting her own throat with ZLH piercing her with his sword like stare .. She also has the memory from that cave and what he did and what happened ..

That poor gal is trapped in the old echoes of deep attraction and longing and guilt form her past memory .. so she is besotted with Zhang She. Zhang Zhe is GOD HANDSOME with his perfectly symmetrical features and upright moral core which draws her from every which way.

It's the way a divinely handsome monk-like person makes one's heart quiver because they just seem so unattainable and pure and impossible

OKAY so I had a quick peek ..

Umm .. I think I could safely put a 70% possibility that you'll enjoy it and as the story progresses, at the half way mark get absolutely riveted, even though the plot might feel patchy and deeply confusing at times.

I am basing this on the fact that you scored TTEOTM / LLTG / SHLYE (Smile has Left Your Eyes) quite high.

Which tells me you enjoy complex bad boy / bad gal shows where it's not necessarily a goodie-two-shoes plain romance ..

If the plot sounds tough .. keep coming here to get clarifications .. you will find a NEST of SOKP adorers who will patiently explain stuff (with spoiler tags)

The fact that you seem to categorically not like palace intrigues / politics etc .. kind of disposes me to warn you that it might end up too heavy and complex and unrewarding for you.
It's anything but a 'plain ol' sweet romance'

However often a slickly and beautifully told 'palace intrigue / political' tale can pull in large audiences with the way the romance is woven into it ..

It's NOT "the romance stuff" if you are looking for a pure romance heavy thread as the MAIN structure of the show
BUT it IS "the romance stuff" if you enjoy romance as a fuel for the engine that is moving and affecting the character's decisions (political - personal - social) on their emotional longings for a romantic connection.

The weaving of the political intrigue, state craft, revenge tale is SO well done that it has heft and depth ..
The cinematography and OST lift it even higher .. The story is truly told in the scenes and actions and camerawork.

IML (in my lens) it's one of the top Dramas in period setting.

The show is specially leveraged for viewers who LOVE THEIR mains .. complex - dark - troubled and ambiguous .. when the sweet is sprinkled with sea salt and even a hint of bitters and chilli heat

Think TTEOTM - LLTG .. those who enjoyed those complex layered shows .. will adore SOKP.

I enjoyed watching her SO much in LLTG & HL

I mean she has that 'standardised CDrama FL template features' that seem to really infest and become the downfall of many dramas, because they also get roles where they play infantile or blank faced .. large eyes .. pout lips .. YIKES .. heebeejeebs!!

HOWEVER Zhao Lu Si I found managed to fight off that 'facial feature challenge' by powerful acting that diverts you into seeing the sharp mind clicking behind the role she is essaying.

In LLTG she plays the 'cocky', wilful FL with a very strong character who defines her own path and who knows how to play the folks around her ..

In HL she manages to fit into the shy but spunky character in a deep crush over an older "ga" without making it into a cringey simpering role .. which is SO difficult to AVOID falling into when IT IS ALL ABOUT 'cringey first love' .. and she elevates it to a different level where you are swaying along with her and feeling her every emotion ..

Anyway that of course is how it played out for me.

Both dramas were a 10/10 almost for me .. and of course the kudos goes to the director knowing just what to extract from Zhao Lu Si

I haven't dared to peek into OFL discussion thread yet (until I have some serious ammo about why it's so brilliant and why I full heartedly shipped Wang and Lu in this rare gem of a role and drama inspite of its many weaknesses).
I was warned by a fellow OFL lover about it 😅

Anyway so happy to know that I found someone on Meteor Garden because of Wang in OFL.

Wang is also I in Ever Night 2.
But in that I cannot wrench Ning Que out of Chen Fei Yu out of my head - the role and the actor so perfectly blended into each other - so I may never end up watching EN2 🫣🙈

I had tried watching BOF (the KDrama Version) and found it so "cringey" and the FL so pathetic (am a fan of spunky non-infantile, actresses / roles) and wimpy and weepy and constant "aegyo" faced that I dropped it within an episode or two.
It was also quite repugnant in the way the female role was represented.

However over the years I have ALWAYS bumped into raving fans of the show.. Like a cult following!!

I knew Meteor Garden was a Chinese version bud didn't bother with it either.
This year I forayed into CDrama and discovered quite a few gems of great stories / directing / actors.

I recently finished watching Dylan Wang in Only For Love, and loved his role as well as the story and of course I am Bai Lu fan.

Thus I wondered if I should check out Dylan in this version of BOF.

Any comments anyone who has watched both versions?

After seeing her in 9 eps of PW..hmmm her work on ROTP is mild.. She was still growing her skills

This is a straight up binge material.

Nini excels beyond expectations.

The cracky dialogues are at a different plane altogether.
