this drama needs to get on Netflix to find itself a more discerning audience that can appreciate what makes it stand out as a top notch modern Chinese drama.

so surprised that those who admire Chen Kun’s exceptional acting talent didn’t swing by to leave a comment, if they chanced to watch it on Viki.

The FL pulls off this difficult character with total panache

Am ready to go in for my 3rd binge soon as I get that uninterrupted period of time.

I could smell the beauty of the dialogues in JOPS and RN but couldn’t chew on it and taste it.

The lines of Chinese poetry quoted in JOPS was lost in translation completely, and in JOL (Viki) it was slightly better but still terribly lacking.

I felt it was a tease. I would pause to read carefully and inhale.

The dialogues were so important in R.N. to give you an insight into the characters, mind, into the way the story was moving, into understanding a lot of the machinations and politics

you need to watch the next 12 episodes to understand that bit.

This is looking so fabulous and interesting.
However, the casting of the ML, I mean excuse me. Did they run out of every single guy who could have pulled this off with such panache?
This actor cannot act at all.
Have seen many actors who may not be that suitable for a role, but this actor is absolutely so DUH.

if I end up dropping this drama, it will be because of this ML.
I cannot take one more frame of him showing up.
If she is like this gorgeous Mahogany pillar, he is like a small paper cone next to her.

this powerful actress portraying a powerful woman needed a powerful actor to be her foil.
I have no idea how this poor actress got pulled into playing next to him.

Somewhere the director IMO failed to breathe life and blood into the characters ..

Not as fantastic a director - actor combo as in
- Joy of Peaceful Serenity
- Royal Nirvana

Looked SOLID.. And then it began to grate..

I think I am in the thrall of two stellar Period dramas :
- Royal Nirvana (all 60+12 eps) watched twice immediate back to back
- Joy of Peaceful Serendipity (bowled over by the tremendous acting - sets - directing - character portrayal through evocative directing).

This could have risen to great heights with a better cast and director..

I just failed to find another MEATY historical like the two I mentioned. I lapped those two EVEN touched they both had SUCH POOR quality subbing - ufff!!!
Missed all the poetry and texts.. And got so much gender address wrong.
Plus the awful grammar.. Had to keep inferring as well as using Google Translate - inspite of that I was riveted.

Trying to get those two on Viki by suggesting it.
Youku and YouTube is so poorly translated.

I am feeling that too.

What an excellent script story, production budget. And what a waste to have cast a strong actress, who is not being directed well at all.

The ML is truly so uninspiring and boring. He has no spunk, and I feel terrible saying this, but there’s absolutely nothing attractive about him, either the director or the cinematographer or costume, and makeup person couldn’t draw out his character as someone the audience would be able to rise up to cheer for, have their emotions bubbling over.
Just not an engaging enough actor either; sometimes a fantastic acting completely Subdues whatever be their features or physical looks.
(of course, attractiveness lies in the eyes of the beholder, I will admit).

Thinking further - even the OST is unimpressive ..
Basically poignancy is missing in the acting and directing department.

Some sauce .. without making it cheap or selling out in terms of an intelligent way to tell the story, visually, not so much by dialogue.
