Man.. I really like this drama.. and I feel like it had so much potential to be great but it just let me down…

Hey I just started - loving it as I laugh and grin my way through it … love how fast paced smartly edited it is!!! Crazy mad humour - tongue in cheek humour the teases the viewer IMO
We dropped after 1.5 episode. I'm fine with all the leads and i like the Republican era and prolly the story line…
And there isn’t anything truly gripping happening only terrific chase & fight sequences … Terrible subbing doesn’t help either. Waste of a bunch of good actors and large production budget
But losing points for the 'filtered' and ironed spotless look .. Wish it was made more 'slice of life' with their real skin tones and textures; less PLASTIC-Y
The director lost out on creating a truly edgy intro .. very 'meh' handling of the scenes .. should have put us on the edge of the seat .. but I was slouching wishing the story would move faster .. since the exposition was so 'seen that' done to death style .. (NO STYLE)
But curious to see how it plays out.
TOP TALENT in the drama ,, Am praying that they werent made to waste their time in the hands of a 'so-so' Production team with a 'meh' director.

ASIDE : Wallace Chung was SO natural and REAL in "Second Chance" ~ BRILLIANT SCRIPT and DRAMA and our FL Zhu Zhu slayed it in "The Tale of Rose" as a support character and as Main Lead in "Why is He Still Single" opposite and equally talented Wallace Huo.
JUST for the Cinematography .. the lighting, the angles, and mood creation of the frames and scenes .. By Ep 2 I give it a 9/10 .. Holding 1 back to see how it develops.
No cheesy sentimentalism .. cringey 'goody acts' till now .. It's as real as it can get.

At the risk of being gutted and hung in the street square lemme share my “ride” with this drama. I am sure there will be plenty of viewers who agree - and thus the current drop (?) in rating after it was completed.
It’s not a “slice of life” Period / historical Drama. Those who came to the drama with that expectation would not be able to suspend 'critical' analysis and end up being annoyed by the 'plot holes, character discrepancies' etc.
This Drama smoothly glides between dramatic treatment - you are gripped by the story - to rom com comedic treatment - to serious and tragic sequences which catch you by surprise and gasp with its intensity of emotions.
So it’s a highly stylized format, that has been beautifully shot, the camerawork and production is very high quality, and only if you go with those lenses on will you have fun.
At least for the first 25 eps or so … and then be prepared to switch off your brain completely for several eps since frustration will have taken root, and after that fight off the urge to cuss and drop it because drama will begin to strangle you and attempt to put you into coma. Zzzz kind of coma.
I started with a 10/10 rating .. fell to a 9 then to a 8 and last half a dozen eps it was rolling on the floor with a 2/10. Just for the memory of the delight Drama Team gave me in Ep 1-22 I averaged it to 6.5 / 10
When the eps were dropping slowly I had started rewatching with a friend to laugh together and be curious together - felt like a page turner in the beginning - but since I was much ahead .. and friend was behind .. there was total surprise that I withdrew from the rewatch. Friend will find out soon - I didn’t want the current delight to be bombed.
Of course I'LL be killed and DROPPED by friend - LOL - for the time investment I have pulled my friend into

It smoothly glides between dramatic treatment - you are gripped by the story - to rom com comedic treatment - to serious and tragic sequences which catch you by surprise with its intensity.
So it’s a highly stylized format beautifully shot camerawork and only if you go with those lenses on you will have fun (at least for the first 25 eps or so … and then switch off your brain completely for several eps and after that fight off the urge to cuss and drop it. )

So terrible for us non-speakers .. it’s unbelievable what we miss with poor translation!!!
After so many CDramas I too catch poor translation of some more common expressions which could otherwise convey a better nuance 😖
