Ok tell me I'd I'm wrong... So the main chick taken over the second lead appearance but there two of them? Or…
Let me see if I can explain it to you.
When Lu Zhao Yao was resurrected, she was somehow linked to Qin Zhi Yan and they looked alike in the eyes of other people. Only Qin Zhi Yan could see and hear her as Lu Zhao Yao. After Lu Zhao Yao ate some medicine to regain her power, she became invisible during day time, and reappeared in the evening. To everybody else, she looked exactly like Qin Zhi Yan. She was only visible to Qin Zhi Yan as Lu Zhao Yao at all times. So when Lu Zhao Yao went to see Mo Qing with Qin Zhi Yan's face, she was a badass, fearless and bossy. On the contrary, when the real Qin Zhi Yan met Mo Qing, she was a scaredy cat. Mo Qing noticed the difference, and knew the former was Lu Zhao Yao, his beloved.
It is very interesting to see the actress, Xiao Yan, playing 2 roles - one as a timid Qin Zhi Yan and the other as the badass Lu Zhao Yao; she portrayed the characters very well, switching in and out.
I’m 5 episodes in. It’s kinda odd with the way the story flows. As if I am watching a “short”/“cut”…
There's no "long version" or "short version" per se. It's just how the drama's been cut. One version (Youtube) has, kind of, a prologue/preface in the beginning. The other version has next episode preview at the end. So they can be confusing, but once you get the hang of a version, after a few episodes (for me, like 10 episodes - I'm slow), you'll find it easy to follow.
That's exactly how I feel too about this drama - you hit right on the spot. Great analysis. To be honest, I did enjoy it in the beginning - simply for its simplicity and endearing moments when the female and male leads were together, which was not very frequent, as you pointed out. As the drama developed, it kind of felt incoherent, but I still plodded on. Only coming to the final episode where they jammed everything into one episode, that was a big let down. This is a frequent mistake made by many Chinese dramas.
This drama is intriguing. The actors are wonderful. The fighting scenes are authentic. For once, we have a badass female lead whom I enjoy watching. There are moments of love and compassion, at the same time, beat the shit out of the self-righteous nonsense. This drama is addictive. I binged watched from episodes 1 to 36. Now, I'm waiting for new episodes everyday. In the beginning, I wasn't paying much attention because it was rather slow, and the cut of the drama confused me. However, as I continued, it became very interesting and funny with a straight face. It is ironic to see the supposedly "good" people doing the bad things, and the "bad" people doing the good things as in this drama. I love the badassness of the female lead. I also love the power the son of the evil king wields - with one thrust of his hand, he is able to send one into oblivion, or arrives at his destination in a whiff.
@chinesedramafan: Not sure what you mean. The actresses look good. Thought they all have non-arched brows....
They do look good. It seems the straight eyebrows style is more favored in the Chinese fashion (especially in historical movies/dramas) when compared with the western fashion. That's why when I watch this drama (Hao Lan), I find the actresses have more arc eyebrows compared to other Chinese dramas.
Haha, happened to me too, the addictiveness. There's another addictive one for you - if you haven't started with…
You're right. There are various versions with different cut. I'm watching it mainly on Youtube but it's not been subbed yet. Someone also suggested http://dramas.biz/cn190128b/. This website includes various versions. Again, none of the versions has been subbed as far as I can tell. It can be quite confusing (to me) to watch if you don't understand Chinese because of the way it's been cut. However, you'll get the hang of it rather quickly.
This show is so damn addicting...I wasn't expecting this at all!!! I wanted to have a "side show" to watch while…
Haha, happened to me too, the addictiveness. There's another addictive one for you - if you haven't started with "The Legends", you should. I'm now glued to these 2 dramas, waiting for the new episodes everyday. Damn! I need a life :D
I hated the 5th prince initially but now I'm feeling sorry for him, having committed the greatest error based on false information. My heart is out for him to redeem himself.

The Youtube version was cut so bad that they are confusing. So, if you can understand Chinese with no subs, watch the above version instead.
