I must admit I have never seen characters speaking English out of context, except "bye bye" or "thank you" (weird enough, but it seems like almost everyone in the world has adopted those words). Maybe I just haven't watched enough k-dramas to have noticed. In c-dramas on the other hand, when there is a non-Chinese character (for example if they are abroad or some business man shows up), they speak English in the beginning and then they all start speaking Chinese. *lol* In some dramas it seems like every other French waitress is fluent in Chinese... :p
I so agree about the wrist grab though. Very annoying!
Are they younger couples on this? I’m not interested in the lead girl story. Thank you!
This drama is based on the female lead, and you probably shouldn't watch it if you're not interested in her. There are some younger characters, though - most notably the actress Xiang Xiang. She is an important character, but so far (I just watched ep 10) she is very childish and not very likable. She has an unrequited love for an actor. So far he is unwilling to be with her, so I'm not sure if there will be any younger couples.
I'm wondering why this drama has a high rate!!! I'm not familiar with the Chinese opera, I'm sure it's great though.I'm…
I would say you're right. The opera parts are interesting, the cinematography is wonderful, and the ML is indeed fabulous. There are many "normal life scenes" because everything that happens (and there are some little interesting things here and there) is sort of just background to the lead's friendship (and romance which is not really romance). I thought the two of them were cute together, and I adored Cheng Fengtai (even though he's too good to be true), but for me it wasn't more than that and I just completed it. I don't regret watching it but I rated it 6.5.
But there is more. True love is loving yourself. if you cant love yourself you cant love others. its a sad loop.…
I very much agree that you can't truly love others if you can't love yourself. I also know that it can be a sad loop! I really don't think that it has to be that way for everyone, though. :)
The 19-year-old teenager in me loved it! It was cute and fun and light and really refreshing. It had hearts and…
I do see what you mean about how the perspective of love evolves, and I agree with you. My intention was absolutely not to have people identify with these types, though! I wanted only to find a new way to describe, for fun, how drama characters are often predictable and full of clichés, since that is something people often seem to like to talk about. No person in real life should be 100% like any of these types.
I did not mean to diagnose anyone (not even a fictional character) with obsession, I just use common MDL terms here. Also, in real life I have never and will never call a person an "idiot", but I believe everyone who has been around MDL for more than a couple of months knows what a "noble idiot" refers to. I think (I could be wrong though) that many people don't think of and use the world "obsessive" in that serious sense but to describe something that is done a bit too much (as in often seen on feeds, "I binged this drama over the weekend; I was obsessed with it!"), either somewhat jokingly or as a negative term. That is to explain why I chose the word. Now that I think about what you are saying, though, it occurs to me that you are saying that using it may be seen as ableist language? If so, I apologise! English is not my first language, and when I translate "obsessive" in my head to my language in THIS context, I would use another word that when I translate the "obsessive" in OCD. Well, I was simply trying to find a short way of describing the typical evil second lead's personality when it comes to romantic relationships. Which word would you have chosen?
As for "lover", I meant it as "person who loves" rather than "person you make love to" - which is the meaning you seem to read into it. How could I have phrased it better, do you think?
How this thing could "encourage" any behaviour, though, I don't understand?
Thank you for taking the time to point out my mistakes.
