He is really great. After Ode to Joy and the first episodes of Like a Flowing River, I thought that dimples and a sexy voice was all there was to him. I was wrong! I saw another side of his acting in Return the World to You, and he was wonderful in Hope All is Well with Us. And then he was absolutely perfect (and he smiled very little and barely showed his dimples!) in the stupid drama See You Again. Now I can't wait to watch more. I would love to see him in a main role as the male lead in a romance drama. (Something as good as Hope All... but with more romance!)
I was surprised and happy when I saw Yi Pei ALIVE in the end of the drama! It seems like either he was very lucky to survive getting stabbed, OR Shi Jian actually changed one thing in her dream that transferred to the real life. In the dream/alternate universe, she was the one getting stabbed in the back and saved him. It looked like this became what really happened. Also, the way he was looking at her made it look like he must have been dreaming the SAME dream (even though he had been visiting her at the hospital, they said, but maybe he was in a coma a short while?) because he looked at her like she meant something to him. He looked at her just the same way as he had been doing during all those episodes. I can't decide if this makes his character more or less tragic... In the dream, he always stayed by her side, but she wasn't married then... now that she has her husband and child, the only reasonable thing for him to do is to walk away. Isn't this really sad though?
And while she/they were dreaming, he loved her so much and did so much for her. If the dream was somehow real (another dimension or something), what happened then after the plane crash? Maybe they start a new life together since Jiacheng is already dead in that timeline.....
I've got to say though... a whole drama based on a person's dream while in a coma... I don't really like it! I did care so much about Yi Pei... about a dream! *lol*
I also dislike sudden breakups. They really happen too often! Sometimes it makes some kind of sense when a couple is forced apart (one has old parents and friends in NKorea and one has a successful business in SKorea, for instance...) but often it's just more or less stupid. Childhood friends who become lovers though is the one that annoys me the most! Sometimes it can be okay, but even then I think it can be exaggerated.
SLS, though, is something that I hear about a lot, but I haven't watched many dramas where that happened to me. (I have only watched two c-dramas like that, Sound of the Desert and See You Again.) I guess I can consider myself lucky that I have managed to avoid that kind of dramas! Or maybe that's more common in k-dramas that c/j-dramas, which I've watched the most.
Those of you who have watched it, the guys go to some big sauna like thing... They sit in a private room that appears to be very warm (looks like t-shirts are wet from sweat). On the floor is something that looks like huge popcorns (but obviously it's not because it's on the floor), all over the room. What is that?! I get so distracted trying to figure it out whenever there's a scene from that room! *lol* I thought someone here might know if you have seen this in other dramas...
I've watched 5 episodes and although it seems to be a bit on the ridiculous side, I don't dislike it. To be perfectly honest, though, I started watching it for Yang Shuo!
She's the best! One of the things I LOVED about Yanxi Palace was that they didn't make the Empress as a cruel…
Yeah, well, they had plenty of other cruel characters, so they didn't need her to be the one! Palace dramas can be kind of exhausting to watch in that way with all the backstabbing. I loved the warm and genuine relationship between her and Yingluo. I always like when there is actual friendship and appreciation between female characters.
Thank you for writing this insightful article. I liked this drama a lot, and the lovely Empress was one of my favourite characters and one of my most adored characters ever. I'm glad to see someone else loved her, too. It was very interesting to read your article.
Some people say this is too slow, but it all depends on what you like. It was not slow for me, and I thought it was interesting, very enjoyable and heartwarming. The main leads are a couple that look natural together. With the exception of the older generation, I found the supporting characters less interesting. I admit that in the end, there were still a few details that didn't make complete sense to me, but I would say that this drama was definitely worth my time!
Thanks for the comment. Seasons 3 to 5 are a rollercoaster ride :)
I really need to watch them sometime. Oh, and I just remembered - I actually wrote a CW article for S2 back in 2013! *lol* I didn't realise it was THAT long ago!
Thank you for writing such a good, substantial article! I have only seen season 1 and 2, but I've always thought I will watch more one day. I still remember my first reaction to this drama - such a great character who really never fails; I found her very refreshing. :)
To anyone thinking about watching this on Netflix (only six episodes!!), I advice to watch the 25 first episodes on YouTube. The first 25 are subbed, the others are not. I wouldn't have started this if I had known, but I watched the butchered Netflix version. Some things made very little sense, but because I had some background, it was okay.
Very little information so far, but it looks promising! Historical, my guess 1920's or 30's, judging from the picture... and Hu Ge + Ma Yi Li look like a good combo! :)
And while she/they were dreaming, he loved her so much and did so much for her. If the dream was somehow real (another dimension or something), what happened then after the plane crash? Maybe they start a new life together since Jiacheng is already dead in that timeline.....
