Interesting observation! I think what can explain this is that for the Japanese culture, family in the foundation…
Well, it seems like in many of these dramas, the mothers who walk out of their kid's life is single or a widow. so there was never a father. I know I've seen dramas where children have been abandoned by both parents, too. But maybe it is a bit easier for fathers who are single to remarry AND keep the kid? Well, I'm not sure. All I know is that I have seen abandoned children in many more dramas (I just can't remember any examples right now) after I wrote the article, and I think that the basic reason for it is that being a single mother is so very difficult for them that sometimes they are unable to give the child a good life. (It seems like a lot of the time they workday is long, and maybe employers are unwilling to hire a single mother.) Anyway, it seems to be a thing in j-dramas, but not so much in k-dramas or c-dramas. Which is quite interesting, because South Korea and China are the top two countries that Swedish childless couples adopt from...

Also, thank you for reading my article so many years after its publication. I had almost forgotten about it myself. When I wrote it, I had only been watching dramas for six months or so.

*lol* If he had been slapped, maybe he would have taken the hint!

You may be right. What you say sounds like it makes sense, and I will wait and see until I have watched the whole drama. I don't know when that will be, but I still have one more week off from work! :)

You recommended Aishiteiru to ittekure to me years ago (don't remember exactly when or what we were talking about), and I finally watched it last year. Even though you told me it was very bad, the ending ruined the drama so much for me that I gave it a much lower rating than you did. (I guess I'm an emotional rater and maybe the way the drama ended was worse than I thought...) I think most of the drama was very good, though, and I am glad I watched it.

Well, I don't know that for sure, I just figured it has to be something like that. Anyway, yes, he had some nerve..! He has a very fixed way of thinking "a man should do this, a woman should do that", so I think that maybe he thought he had to fulfill some sort of husbandly duty! I'm glad he gets better.

I don't dislike him, but I think he had the wrong attitude to his wife. About his wife not being blameless, I don't know... she can't help that she gets a depression, and the fact that she doesn't like their lifestyle... I do think she should have tried harder to communicate with him to make him understand her point of view before it got to that point, but the way I see it (still episode 8), they were a couple that was very mismatched from the beginning. I think a couple needs to agree on a lot of things to make it work. If they don't agree, one of them has to compromise, and who says it couldn't have been him that had to do that instead of her?

I think it's right what she said in one of the early episodes: she is the one who can't keep up with his pace in life. It reminds me of my friend and her husband. She got very sick (heart problem), and then she got depressed from being exhausted for so long, and she needed love and support in the daily life. His response: "you can't stand in the way of my career!" Her emotional needs made him uncomfortable so instead of giving her a hug when she was sad he got angry. She wanted tenderness, he wanted cheerful smiles and appreciation for his hard work. Neither of them could fulfill the needs of the other one... so instead of being unhappy together, they got a divorce.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the drama because I saw something similar in real life. Maybe the wife is to blame also for being overly sensitive and emotional, but there are many ways to react... Another friend of mine has a similar situation and her husband has chosen (lovingly and willingly) not to put his career first. So people are different! They say that opposites attract, but I think problems are to expect if there are too irreconcilable opinions.

Yes, I also thought it was that kind of pills. Sure, he didn't look like he would need it, but that day he had gone more than 30 hours without sleeping. (I have done that once and it made me feel almost sick.) The way he talked about his job and his opinions on working, I don't think it was the first time he did something like that, maybe not that extreme, but I think it was normal for him to work himself to exhaustion. No matter how young and generally healthy a person is, I don't think it's healthy to be constantly overworked. I think he loved his job even though it gave him a lot of stress. With that kind of pressure (even though he brought it on himself!), I don't think it's that strange that he needed it. He was simply way too tired.

Haha, yes... Smoking is very unattractive in real life, but I highly doubt that I'll ever meet this guy for real, so it's easy not to care!

Thanks for the recommendation! I was going to ask you anyway. :)

Oh! I just wanted to show you some screenshots from my feed. Don't know what's wrong.

Actually... I only remember two kisses, and in both cases the female lead was taken by surprise by it, so I guess the drama was lacking in that department. I suppose there would have been a kiss if the drama had been at least five seconds longer... I know, it's a shame when it doesn't happen... especially when you know it by looking at a man that it would be so steamy if he was given the chance!!

Yes, let's keep looking out for his stuff and hopefully there will be something good soon. :)

Yes, I have to admit that these two dramas are opposites in that way. If you hate makjang that much... I guess I can tolerate it sometimes if there is enough things to like about the drama. I can't really explain why. But it's not as "sober" as Hope All...

Yes, they fall in love... The thing is, they were a couple but stuff happened and then the male lead got a face transplant (and we're lucky he got Yang Shou's face) and seeks revenge. So he gets close to the female lead to find out what happened in the past, but falls in love with her again (okay, yes, this is too makjang, but Yang Shou's acting in the angsty scenes was so good!). She falls in love with him more slowly because she doesn't know that he is her "dead" fiance whom she can't forget. There are a few almost kiss scenes (one that was very intense) but not many real kisses, because the real romance starts too late.

So... the conclusion is: don't watch it unless you are super desperate for more Yang Shuo!

There is actually a lot more intimacy in season 2 of Ode to Joy (Liu Tao there too, I love her!), but they are just one of four main couples in that drama. I understand what you mean... sometimes it's so strange how a couple can be lovers when they don't act like it!!

Oh, I don't know how you did it, I just watched episode 7! But I guess if you did nothing else in two days, so...

I'm glad you liked parts of it at least. Yang Shou is very enjoyable to watch, that's for sure! I haven't watched very many of his dramas. I liked him a lot in Return the World to You. The drama is a bit crazy but I liked it (you can read my review if you want to know more), and I guess he was the best thing about the drama! There is a happy ending, but the last two episodes makes it look like the worst ending ever. Then in the last two minutes of the drama they make it happy... stupid, but yeah... I always want to recommend Ode to Joy, but he isn't the main character there. I haven't completed Like a Flowing River. That's all I know.... so far. I plan to watch See You Again.

Haha, I see we have different watching habits, so you will most likely complete it before I do. I never skip scenes (except fightscenes, but I don't think there are any in this drama!) unless I'm very bored and don't really enjoy the drama (but I've watched too much to want to drop it). That has only happened with a few Chinese historical dramas. But I agree with you that the work scenes aren't interesting. I think business can be interesting but then it has to be done in a way that makes me understand and care. Here, I understand that it has something to do with drama production, but I don't really get it. As for the wife's love life, I haven't even seen it yet! But yes, I'm enjoying the drama even though it can become a mess before the end, who knows, haha.

I'm glad I made you find and like someone new! :D I really love his deep voice.

I don't dare recommend it yet, as I've only just started it myself, but I hope we'll both enjoy it. :) I think it's good so far.

I have only watched two episodes so far. I think it is a good start. It is not "nice" so far - Female lead is very troubled and unhappy, and male lead doesnt understand at all, not at all supporting. But that is actually realistic (it can be this way irl) and I suppose the drama is about growth for both of them. Looking forward to the rest of it!
