I am sad about YBY but I really love these types of xianxias and really want to see this. Also HYX is great, I'm glad she has a chance of being a FL in a drama like this.
I don't even care if there's a tragic ending, I'm just so glad Peng Xiaoran finally has a high budget historical drama where she's the FL. She's been slept on for too long. After GMP I thought she was going to blow up and be everywhere but it's been so slow.
I enjoyed it, not as much as One Spring Night, but it was still good. There were quite a few changes but the overall vibe they kept the same. The darker more atmospheric kind of sexiness of the original was here and was a welcome change from the super bright immature looking romance cdramas.
One change I really enjoyed was the little sister. I really wanted the ML to be a single father like in the original but knowing Chinese dramas and their avoidance of stuff like that, the little sister plotline was a pretty good alternative. It was completely different to the original but it had value in its own right. The brother sister relationship was sweet and so was the FL's relationship with her. The little sister's own little romance was the only thing in the whole drama that brought me to tears.
I severely disliked them adding in another girl for the second male lead. It was an attempt to make him look worse which really wasn't necessary at all. The morally grey behavior on part of the FL in the original added depth that isn't usually present in romance dramas. Here they basically wanted to make it seem like "look they're both bad," which they were, but like, they were supposed to be bad in different ways.
The changes in regard to the parents made sense and I didn't really have any issues there at all.
The back and forth felt more exhausting here than in the original. Idk why but her relationship with the SML felt so much more draggy in this drama.
Okay, so the acting. It was pretty good from everyone. Except wtf was with Sun Yi's crying scenes? The obnoxious sniffles and the face she put on every time, it was so much. I haven't watched one of her dramas in a long time, did she always do this? At one point she's supposed to be making herself cry as a cute way to get her way with the ML and he actually makes fun of her and does a similar face. I snorted.
As a remake, it's definitely not as good as the original. But compare it to other romantic Cdramas, and it's pretty damn good.

Definitely don't listen to the review that says this is xianxia at its best, because it's certainly not. BUT it's good fun. It's standard xianxia but I appreciated that the ML had some development he had to undergo. Most male leads in xianxias are already the most powerful and wise and they're cold blocks of ice. I like that the ML here was goofy and had to work a little bit to get stronger. FL was adorable, as expected of ZLS. She surprised me a bit with her voice later on though. She pulled off a mature phoenix queen quite well. I also appreciated that a lot of the elder immortals weren't terrible people like they so often are in xianxias. The ones here were mostly reasonable and kind. There were a couple of exceptions to this, but for the most part they actually seemed like wise ancient immortals. I also enjoyed the fact that the female antagonist wasn't driven by a delusional one sided love. Her descent had a bit more depth than the typical "I love him no one else can have him."
But honestly even with those positives it just wasn't that special. It reminded me of a million other xianxias I've seen before. But if you love the genre like I do it's worth a watch for sure. Beautiful costumes, beautiful people. An otherworldly mythical setting with an angsty love line. Even if I've seen it before, I'm a sucker for xianxia dramas and this hit those notes.
