Enemies to lovers, IMO, is the best when it isn't a comedy. Some levity is fine but straight up comedy removes the danger, the "kiss or kill" which makes this trope so mesmerizing.
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty is much better drama than True Beauty. They operate on the similar principle: girl who…
True Beauty is also 8 episodes too long. What happens in episode 8 is the endgame yet they kept going and pretending there was a love triangle when there wasn't.
Unpopular opinion: this guy, Song Kang, Rowoon are just some of the actors whose dramas they headlined tanked in ratings yet they keep getting leading roles. Why? I'm honestly puzzled. is it a good agent, family connections, other? I don't think either of them is a good actor and all 3 lack charisma.
I put the Unpopular Opinion caveat so no jumping on me, fans. :)
Fantastic recs! I've got A Writer's Odyssey and Space Sweepers on my PTW, as I haven't had the time to delve into…
I loved Space Sweepers. Super fun, emotional beats work and it has one of the best robots in sci fi ever. Also, being a multi-lingual movie was a nice touch.
OMG OMG OMGTHANK YOU You have finally put the words I wanted to express so badI finally have someone sharing the…
"Double standard Womanists…..…."
which is funny cause there's a number of actors and idols with obvious work done so men are just as prone to aesthetic corrections as women yet it's always women who get singled out. As if we don't noticed male fixed noses, cheek implants, augmented eyes, etc.
Thank you for raising those important issues.Btw, Seo Yea-Ji lied about her education (she did not attend the…
"I am just SO TIRED of female leads. I would love to see at least ONE that I could identify myself with but most of them are as close to a living breathing woman as a tooth fairy or an anime character. They just do not exist in real life!"
Me too. I rarely like a FL in dramas because they are so weirdly written and often acted way OTT that I just scratch my head and even skip through their scenes. Decent to great jobs with male characters but female ones - FL in particular - tend to be completely unrealistic and irritating. I guess they are someone's fantasy but I can't relate to that. I doesn't help that actresses don't seem to have the same endearing quality that number of actors have which they bring into ML, 2ML, etc roles. I could list dramas actors I really like but I will have to pause and think about whether I have a drama actress that I would watch a drama for.
I’m glad it was a great read! And I haven’t watched My ID Is Gangnam Beauty so I think ima check it out
I binged it on Viki. It gets really good and has a very satisfying finale which I find to be a pretty rate occurrence in dramas. Most dramas that I saw don't stick the landing. This one does 100%.
This was a really great read and congrats on your first article! I have thoroughly enjoyed IOTNBO even though…
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty is much better drama than True Beauty. They operate on the similar principle: girl who used to be considered ugly has a beauty makeover but remains as insecure as ever and now even more stressed out about being found out. That prevents her from opening up to the guy who loved her since her "ugly" days.
Where Gangnam defers from Beauty is that it takes the issue seriously, doesn't have a ridiculous love triangle and is paced well enough to climax at the right time. On top of that, it also deals with bulimia and domestic violence in much more satisfying manner (actual interest in these topics for they are major plot points) than Beauty does with OCD (which was just tacked on and kept on a gimmick level). Beauty is also predominantly a comedy so almost everything is played for laughs which demeans the issue of beauty standard and peer pressure. It really plays as if good make-up is a solution for everything. Blech.
Short version: True Beauty was watched and highly rated for Hwang Im Yeop. That's really 90% of its appeal.
I just started Mr Sunshine. First episode is rather awkward so I'm not hooked but does it get better? Waiting…
the reason why I avoid Goblin is LDW. Saw him only once in my lifetime, in TOTNT, and that was one time too many. Cannot stand his smugness and obvi surgical corrections.

Thought so. I noticed that first episodes are almost always the most shaky. Dramas still struggle with introductions. They throw too many things at you and more often than not with flashbacks so hard to know what is now and what is before.
Koreaboo is right. She got fired but won't admit it. No one quits their first leading role. No one.
recently, a certain actor walked off a Netflix movie because he didn't like the hotel. he just checked out, didn't tell anyone. production got halted, people lost jobs. His PR claimed he left for "family reasons" in order to make him appear symapthetic, even hough some known actors who had actual (not made up like this guy) family reasons (death in the family, terminal illness) didn't pull a stunt like that and they finished their shoot. Now this actor is partying with Chris Brown (of Rihanna beating infamy). So much for family reasons. Point being, when it comes to industry rumors vs offical statements, I always go with rumors.
But if her acting was "that bad" how was she casted in the first place. She is a rookie actress, obviously the…
There's a difference between nailing audition and actually playing a character. It's nothing new that someone impresses during the audition and then when the shooting starts, director realizes he or she has the wrong actor. I'll give you an example, LOTR. A lot of people forgot or didn't even know that Viggo Mortensen wasn't the first choice for Aragorn. The actor who got the part and even filmed for few weeks was Stuart Thownsand. According to official version, he was let go because Peter Jackson thought that he was too young for the part. Unofficially, who knows?
Plus: Tattooing better mean shirtlessness. His character lost the will to live so we better get some shirtlessness of sorrow (same as beard/stubble of sorrow but sexier).
Minus: the threat of a FL that brings back his will to live. :bangshead:
