I am not a kind of person who watches ongoing series but use to read spoilers and reviews over here which were…
Ah I don't think you're the minority lol Don't worry. And even if it was the case, it's still a matter of what you personally enjoy and like to watch.
But some of those who don't like the series are quite noisy. I personally think they start the series with already a negative mindset or with preconceived ideas...so of course they will always find flaws....
Not saying there are not some flaws with the show or that some users are not sincere in their criticism but some comments seem too harsh for what is really shown to you since I've seen far worse in other series...
God, looks like everyone telling that Gene's mental breakdown was "too much" just lack emotional intelligence.…
"God, looks like everyone telling that Gene's mental breakdown was "too much" just lack emotional intelligence."
SO TRUE. I'm baffled by this. Some people are really not so empathic....this is really saddening...For now I think everything seems quite logical in the "plot" (unless it changes in the later episodes we never know, but for now I'm not disappointed !)
There are many things you write that I agree with entirely. And there are some aspects of this episode that I…
btw thank you for this interesting comment ! At least you try to explain and bring some arguments while being respectful and not aggressive, which is not (always) the case here ! I don't agree with you but it was a fun debate :)
There are many things you write that I agree with entirely. And there are some aspects of this episode that I…
5) "If on the other hand Gene is a gay man (...) then it would make sense to understand that he may have a male "love interest", i.e. Nubsib, - but then it's justified to wonder why he is so overwhelmingly distraught (is the fact that Nubsib failed to tell him explicitly that they once knew each other as children SO impossibly upsetting, so shocking, so unforgivable? - really?) and it's equally justified to question his adamant refusal to listen to Nubsib."
I've already explained it is not only the reason of Nubsib being his childhood friend but all the context behind. Nubsib has lied to him since the beginning. He also LIVES with HIM. INSIDE HIS HOUSE. And now inside his heart.
He refuses to listen to him because he is angry at Nubsib but also at himself (he "feels stupid"). He won't listen to more "lies". He doesn't trust him anymore. Each word of Nubsib would just hurt him since he doesn't trust him anymore. He has just let someone for the first time in his own little world, he had let his guard down for the first time and then he was fooled....
Also you contradict yourself when you say after :
" People behave in different ways, you know. Some human beings, in precisely the same situation, would be perplexed, uneasy, agitated - yes, but they wouldn't stop the car and dissolve in tears; and rather than instantly kicking the love interest out of the apartment without bothering to listen to him, they might well be keen to put some questions to him instead - and get some answers. So - different viewers interpret the evidence of what they/we see in different ways. It's not about being overly literal or lacking awareness of subtlety."
Indeed, some people behave in different ways. But why is it impossible for some of the "reviewers" here to undertand that Gene is one of those people ? "They wouldn't stop the car and dissolve in tears " And WHY NOT ? Why do you BELIEVE so ?
There are many things you write that I agree with entirely. And there are some aspects of this episode that I…
4) "If he is instead a "confused" character, and his confusion is the focus of the drama, well, Nubsib loses importance, and can hardly be called a "love interest", and we are left with a somewhat new story about a confused person who has an anxious, fearful relationship with his family."
But why do you want to bring into opposition both of those feelings ? In what way being confused prevent him from having a love interest ? Because his confusion comes from somewhere....and it comes because of his strong attraction to Nubsib...so of course he is a "love interest" ! Otherwise he would not be confused. He is not ready to accept this part of himself yet.
Again, some of the "reviewers" here have a very restrictive view on human feelings. Human feelings are complex and they can be contradictory between themselves. Why would the drama choose only one focus when you have such complex characters ? That's why I say this series has a lot of subtlety (despite the dirty jokes). And that's why I say some of the "reviewers" here miss that subtlety.
There are many things you write that I agree with entirely. And there are some aspects of this episode that I…
3) "Some of us do not see Gene as an essentially "confused" character - and we haven't been in any way aware that he's notably anxious to prevent his family from knowing that he's ... confused?"
But it is not me who's saying he's confused but Gene himself ! He has said it when he was drunk in ep. 4. He's confused about what to do about his attraction ! That's odd then ! For people being literal, now a character said it and they don't believe him ? And by the way he's acting around Nubsib, that push and pull act he shows ? Isn't that being confused or at least not wanting to go that way but at the same time wanting it ? Confused because not knowing what to do ? Or wanting to solve two contradictory things ? Being attracted to Nubsib and wanting to be with him ? And wanting at the same time to preserve his peace of mind, his own little world ?
Anxious about letting know his family ? Indeed some of the "reviewers" here haven't been aware because it is not SAID. That's what I call being literal. They need things to be said and everything to be explained to them. But you can guess it. Just because of the scene with his "school" friends asking about his sexuality, about Tum saying he needs time to say it. How do you think it will be with his family ? and especially with his father ?
There are many things you write that I agree with entirely. And there are some aspects of this episode that I…
2) "On the face of it, to some people Nubsib's failure to draw attention to this shared childhood background doesn't seem to be the unforgivable offence that causes Gene such overwhelming distress that he breaks down AND orders Nubsib out of his home AND refuses even to listen to him."
So those people take this "reason" literally then. Because they can't see and grasp the "context" or the situation in which this "reason" is coming, that is to say all the unsaid, or the hidden meaning. I've explained in my original comment why I think for Gene this was an "offence". As usual, this context is not only one thing but many things leading to this situation : - Nubsib is too close, in a circle of friends who know his relatives. How do you think Gene will react when his family will start asking questions about him and Nubsib ? - Gene's introvert personality plays also a big part in the way he reacts. I also disagree with people who only see him as "the grumpy, frustrated, bored" person (since you mention this in your comment). Gene has way more emotions than that : he is also very stressed and sensitive, tender and warm with his family, flirty, etc. He is a complex character and he has a wide range of emotions. So the last scene in ep 6 is also quite logical and not surprising, etc.
So those people cannot understand the context and only look at the literal "reason" (he is -just- a childhood friend). They didn't grasp too the complex personality of Gene's character. They simply cannot because they are unable to undertand this kind of personality which seems too "alien" to them. That's what I call a lack of empathy to people who are different from you.
There are many things you write that I agree with entirely. And there are some aspects of this episode that I…
Well, I won't have time to reply to everything you said. But here some of my answers.
Edit ; In fact I have time lol
1) "They aren't "missing" something. They're just different."
In what way "missing something" can be put on the same level as being different ? Missing something is a result, a statement. Being different is related to the idea of existence. Of course we are all different from each other since we are not "clones". I can be different from my neighbour but still miss my train. So saying, missing your train is not missing but just being different makes no sense.
And then you say : "Some people, for instance, find it incongruous that Gene, a character who has displayed a certain degree of brusqueness, frustration and ennui, over 5-6 episodes, is suddenly overwhelmed with emotion and breaks down in tears when he discovers that Nubsib and he were once acquainted as young children - something which Nubsib has failed to disclose."
In what way brusqueness, frustration and ennui will prevent people from having emotional breakdown ? So for those "reviewers" people can always feel frustrated, brusque and being bored all of their life ? We can't have moments of our life which are "explosive" ? That's what I call "missing" something....And it is not a matter of being different then but being enable to understand others. That's what you call a lack of empathy.
And it's still a very good episode. I disagree with a lot of the comments here. The last scene was beautifully acted and filmed (with the shaky camera movements showing the vulnerability of the characters). You can feel Up emotions and breakdown. He is such a great actor ! As for the confusion some of you felt at the end of the episode, I don't think it was that illogical...
Gene's reaction was quite expected considering the situation. How can you trust someone who's fooled you, someone you've basically let into your home and your heart ? There seems to be a problem with Gene's dad too. And Gene is afraid of everything, confused about his own sexuality. He didn't think his love interest would be so close, and in his inner circle at that, close to his family and friends ! He doesn't want his family to know !Just like he wasn't ready to tell something so personal about himself in front of his school "friends" ?
As for Nubsib' silence, I think now he was waiting for Gene to give him permission to give his reason. Just like he has always done until then. And guess what, Gene haven't given him this time his "consent", even when Nubsib was trying to reach him with his hand...That's why you have the "silence"...
I still think this is a great series. I don't understand the (too) literal point of views of some here. Too bad. Because a lot of you miss the subtlety this show has.
I guess it is difficult to be an introvert and a sensitive person in this society...lol -facepalming- And let's not talk about the people who absolutely want them to be cousins, half-brothers whatever...
We know that Auntie can simply be friend, but it can also mean AUNTIE... I highly doubt Gene & Sib are meant to…
I guess it's a matter of personal taste and they can't please everyone....but I prefer this episode to the previous one. The last scene was very gripping. But I like to feel frustrated lol My only complain is : I want to see more Nubsib and Gene ! Ep.4 and Ep 2 are still my favorite episodes for now.
But some of those who don't like the series are quite noisy. I personally think they start the series with already a negative mindset or with preconceived ideas...so of course they will always find flaws....

Yes, it happens in real life too. So it is not a cliche for everyone. Not everyone is like you. Please respect the experience of others.
Apparently Raf has blocked me just because I won't agree with him lol
PS2 : For Raf, "Hate" is quite a strong word though....I think I was quite respectful in my words and not agressive ? Ah well, too bad.
