Ning (previous life)was his wife/love of his life and died bc he failed to protect her when he was fighting his older brother for the family title. He never remarried bc of his love for her. Ning however believed that he killed her in the first life so when she became Ning, she has a hate relationship for him but also want to avoid having anything to do with him in her second life.
When Ning died in the first life, her soul somehow became trapped in a jade hairpin. Through this hairpin and the owner, she breezed through and witness everything that happen. She witness her 3rd brother became the king’s right hand official and his cold scheming personality.

The novel moves a lot more slower than the drama. Each charafter is pretty complicated with a past, a challenging present and an uncertain future along the novel. It is still a good read and I m glad the drama is good to watch.

Drama can’t follow novel exactly for a lot of reasons. A lot of good novel plots needs to be altered, excluded or changed to pass censorship. So if you read the novel and then watch the drama…you will be disappointed at the storyline lol.

Yet he still can’t have peace and happiness throughout his life. He was born with privilege but that was short lived since his family was branded as traitors and guilty of treason. His youth, innocence and aspirations died with his family. He may have any girls he wants but they don’t matter bc they are not his beloved. He was given a taste of love peace and a family life only to be lost. Everything in his life was short lived. Sure you don’t see it as tragic bc you like the materialistic things.
YDZ is the most tragic character I come across in all the dramas I watched. His life and encounters were so unfair to him and his end was just heartbreaking and sorrowful. I just hope his son's life is more content and happy than his.
This drama is well written and adapted...but I can't bring myself to complete it due to the character's endings. BDJ who grew up with everything ends up with nothing but living in a drunken state of losses, sadness, loneliness and regret. It's the stories of legends for sure, but the growth, choices, sacrifices and ending for these beloved characters are too tragic/sad.

Oh yeah you’re not the only hater, BDJ also hates YWJ in the novel for what happen to his BFF. BDJ can’t do anything to YWJ bc he knows YDZ would not be happy (even in death). So your annoyance of the character is validated lol.
I don't understand the hate. She was literally sold by her father and strong-armed into marriage. She is blameless.
This is the reason YDZ chose to kill himself in the end. He realized the mistakes and wrong he committed base on his selfish love for YWJ. He didn’t blame her but only himself bc that was his choice. YDZ is a very sad character who went from having something to ending up with nothing. It’s heart breaking.

Bc of her selfishness, she used and ruined 3 men who were whole heartedly devoted to her. She was loved by many but failed everyone. In the end she always choose herself and bc of that, she ended up with nothing (in terms of life: love one, family, etc), thus the jaded character in the sequel. So everyone who pity her as a trapped person in her fate don’t see how selfish of a character she is. She has choices but she choose to sacrifice others to get to her goal.
the lead female and supporting actresses in this drama are so unfamiliar, i personally find them 'plain'...it seems to be the case when it comes down to light romance wuxia dramas.
