As great as JOL2 can be, not everyone is into wuxia+comedy. This drama may have some sloppy writing in character…
I understand that not everyone is into Wuxia, and JOL wasn't a recommendation; I was simply sharing my experience with historical/Wuxia dramas this year.
As for the "rare 8" you mentioned, there must be a calculator error—for me, there’s no way this drama is even a 7 on Douban, let alone an 8. Also, 8s aren't as rare as you think. Just in the last year and the first half of this year, several dramas have scored over 8 on Douban, including: The Long Season (9.4), To the Wonder (8.9), Blossom Shanghai (8.7), Meet Yourself (8.7), Three-Body (8.7), An Ancient Love Song (8.6), Mysterious Lotus Casebook (8.5), The Knockout (8.5), Ripe Town (8.5), Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II (8.5), Nothing But You (8.2), Fake It Till You Make It (8.2), and Thirteen Years of Dust (8.1).
After waiting forever JOL2 was alright but it really failed to engage me like JOL1 did. Anyway, another great…
I absolutely loved it! ❤
As for Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty 2, I haven't watched the first season yet, so I couldn't jump straight into season 2 when I saw it airing (I’m assuming they’re heavily connected!).
Lately we are all so desperate for a great or at least good new drama that we will watch anything, the standards…
Not just desperate—I’m practically begging at this point xD. I think Liu Shishi, Yang Yang, Zhao Lusi, and Cheng Yi all have dramas set to release this year, so hopefully, we’ll get some great content soon. In the meantime, I’ll try to finish this somehow, and then maybe take a break from C-dramas to watch a few K-dramas.
Aside from *JOL2* released earlier this year, I haven't come across a great new historical/Wuxia drama in 2024—and this one is no exception.
In the first part of the drama, I had to shutdown my brain to accept that the FL forgot everything about herself, yet somehow could do everything else perfectly fine. Their relationship during that phase was nice, but the lazy writing and repetitive scenes quickly became tiresome. For instance, every time the ML was about to confess that he isn't her husband, she'd say something, and he'd decide against it. How many times did that happen? 100? It sure felt like it.
When the truth finally came out, the ML's character took a nosedive—he became petty and pathetic, honestly unbearable to watch at times. And as for the comedic scenes, I'm puzzled. Was the character written like that in the novel, or is the actor just not good at playing silly and comedic roles? He does well in serious, intense, and dramatic scenes, but in the lighter moments, his facial expressions feel so forced, it’s hard to watch.
It's not just the ML—the other two leads are also poorly developed and frankly, unlikable. This is usually a red flag for me that the writer is likely female (just as some male writers struggle to write convincing female characters) and of course, no disrespect to female writers—there are many who do an excellent job: *LLTG*, *NLB*, *LBFAD*, *ROTP*... and so on.
I'll continue fast-forwarding just to see how it ends, but my expectations are low.
Thank you for summing this up so eloquently. I couldn't have said it better myself.I literally started watching…
I feel you ❤❤❤ Great minds think alike ;)
Also, don't be surprised by some of the replies you see here : The further a society drifts from the truth, the more they will hate those that speak it...
His words are too fancy for an MDL user, he's definitely a bot🤣. Also using same sentences many times
Just when you think you've seen it all, here's someone talking to themselves with two accounts 😂😂😂 No wonder pharmaceutical companies are thriving these days compared to other businesses.
And by the way, when he says "guys," he's talking to his other personalities. Typical behavior for someone struggling with schizophrenia. Let's all wish him well—though honestly, he seems beyond saving at this point.
Goodwill Announcement for people supporting the show 😉Watch out for the below account as well along with that…
I was busy working, and it seems this bot is out here spreading false narratives about me. Looks like you played yourself, and you’re too clueless to even realize it. I already called you out on what you're trying to say now, and it seems I struck a nerve! Oops. And now you're projecting your own insecurities onto others?
Get verified before you come at me, bot! 😂
Do I look like someone who cares what NPCs obsessed with mindless conformity think? I couldn’t care less. You're just repeating opinions without even understanding where they come from. You lack principles and original thoughts, your programming constantly updated by your masters. What’s left of you is just an empty shell, incapable of independent thinking. That’s why you rely on tools to churn out your soulless replies—just a bunch of words strung together with no real meaning. It’s honestly pretty embarrassing.
I see you've got your feathers ruffled over a few explicit scenes in a K-Drama, and suddenly, the sky is falling?…
You played yourself, and you are so dumb to even get it I already called you out above! Get verified before you talk me, BOT! 😂
Do I look like someone who cares about what NPCs obsessed with mindless conformity think? I couldn’t care less. You’re parroting opinions without even knowing who fed you those ideas. You lack principles and original thoughts, your programming constantly updated by your masters. What’s left of you is just empty shells, incapable of independent thinking, which is why you rely on tools to generate your soulless replies. All of them are just a lot of words strung together without any real meaning. It's actually quite embarrassing.
Exactly!Watch out before the p*rn addicts come for you and try to tell you what an artistic developement it is…

It's actually quite embarrassing.

Ah, how refreshing! A self-appointed defender of "evolved storytelling" who seems to think that a sprinkling of explicit scenes is the pinnacle of artistic progress. Bravo! You're absolutely right—who needs well-crafted characters and compelling narratives when you can just throw in some cheap thrills to keep the masses entertained? After all, nothing says "sophisticated drama" like reducing complex human relationships to a series of steamy encounters. I must have missed the memo that depth and substance are now overrated.
But let’s not stop there. Clearly, the true mark of a superior intellect is the ability to dismiss any critique of this so-called evolution as mere elitism. Because, of course, it’s much easier to slap a label on someone who values quality storytelling than to actually engage with the substance of their argument. The idea that storytelling might involve more than just pandering to base instincts? Well, that’s just old-fashioned, isn’t it?
And as for my "nostalgia"—oh, how perceptive of you! Of course, longing for dramas that don’t insult the intelligence of their audience must be a sign that I’m stuck in the past. After all, who wouldn’t want to trade in the emotional resonance of My Mister or the intricate plotting of Signal for a few moments of cheap titillation? Clearly, the future of Korean dramas lies in abandoning everything that made them great in the first place.
So, by all means, enjoy your "broadening horizons." I’m sure the endless parade of shallow, sexed-up dramas will keep you thoroughly entertained. Meanwhile, I’ll be here, sipping my elitist tea, rewatching the classics that don’t need to rely on shock value to tell a story. But hey, different strokes for different folks, right? 😊
Well, well, well, I knew we’d get here eventually 😌. K-Dramas, one of the last bastions of pure storytelling, are now getting the same VIP treatment that’s ruined Western entertainment. Bit by bit, they’re gearing up to cater to those fine connoisseurs who can’t get enough of trash TV. Remember when people bailed on Western dramas because they couldn’t stomach the endless parade of senseless garbage? So they flocked to Korean dramas for a taste of actual quality. But don’t worry, the powers that be have a solution—slowly but surely, they’ll make sure there’s no difference between American and Korean dramas in terms of sheer filth. Welcome, my friends, to the glorious kingdom of garbage.
And the best part? The people cheering this on haven’t the faintest idea who’s shoveling this junk down their throats or why. They’re basically NPCs, happy to do as they’re told, blissfully unaware of the strings being pulled by their puppet masters. Gone are the days when you could sit back and enjoy a masterpiece like *My Mister* (9.4), *Hospital Playlist* (9.5), or *Signal* (9.2) without worrying that your ears might start bleeding from the nonsense. You didn’t have to lower the volume or nervously glance around, hoping no one walks in. But those days? Say your goodbyes, because soon enough it will be all about moaning and banging in your once beloved Korean dramas. Enjoy the ride to mediocrity, folks!
This drama reminds me of Welcome to Samdal-ri—there are a lot of similarities. I liked WTSR, but this one is better. If it keeps going like this, it's going to be one of the top Korean dramas of 2024. ❤️
Wang Anyu has also wrapped up filming today, I wonder how many months it'll take before we can watch it
As you're well aware, post-production for this type of drama doesn't usually take much time—it should be ready in just a few months. But when it comes to airing, that's a different story... If I remember correctly, *Amidst a Snowstorm of Love*, which was released earlier this year, took a full year and two months from the moment filming wrapped up. Let's hope this drama doesn't take as long!
Honestly, ratings don't tell if you'll like it or not. Be it Douban, MDL, or what so ever. If you criticize rating,…
I understand that ratings don't always tell the full story especially on MDL. Someone mentioned above that this drama is the most viewed this year, which isn't true, so the rating is more than justified. I recognize that there people who fail to recognize that popularity and quality don't always align—many popular dramas are just decent or good. I had high expectations for this drama because it's the second highest-rated historical romance on MDL after LLTG, so I anticipated it would be excellent. However, I ended up feeling frustrated and disappointed. While it's still a good drama, it is definitely overrated compared to other dramas in the same genre. Many of those dramas are rated higher than this one on Douban, and that makes the website more accurate. Regarding the 6.6 score, it's important to note that a rating of 6 is not bad—it's actually a sign of a decent to good drama (I explained that previously because some people were apparently freaked out about it) .
This is the most viewed drama this year so far, so the rating on douban doesnt mean anything, hope this doesn't…
1. "Most viewed drama this year"? Are we talking globally, in Asia, or just China? Let’s assume you meant China—still, it’s not true. It’s popular, sure, but far from the most viewed. JOL2 sends its regards.
2. You’re mixing up popularity with greatness. They don’t always go hand in hand. Some popular dramas are masterpieces, but others aren’t, though this one is decent—just not great.
3. For Cdrama, Douban ratings actually matter—actors, agencies, fans care about it. Can you say the same for MDL or IMDb? Didn’t think so.
4. No bias here. I’ve seen four WXY dramas and at least one with this FL. You’re barking up the wrong tree.
5. Hater? Really? So now disagreeing means hating? It's crazy that there are people who want to dictate what a person should think and feel otherwise they are just a hater!
6. If you think it’s the best drama of the year and keep rewatching it, great! But I disagree—there are better ones.
As for the "rare 8" you mentioned, there must be a calculator error—for me, there’s no way this drama is even a 7 on Douban, let alone an 8. Also, 8s aren't as rare as you think.
