Wait, did I write this article...did you channel my thoughts in a dream. You have so..expressed my confusion. The coughing up blood thing especially gets me. I would be SERIOUSLY perturbed if I started coughing up blood at the drop of a hat! I look forward to the more educated, knowledgeable Chinese fan's responses. Thanks for this much needed article!
The struggle is REAL! lol I actually didn't know that about China but it's interesting what's allowed/not allowed…
Viki was bought out by a Japanese company and when they purchased VIKI the decision was made to do away with all fan channels. Fan Channels were usually not licensed shows, but for the most part were not hit with copy-write violations for some reason. However, Viki didn't make any money off of the fan channels and didn't want the lack of license exposure . Lakorns were not the only shows that were taken off VIKI but there were a great many Russian, Turkish, Indian and other countries shows that were fan channels too. I miss the cultural diversity that you used to be able to find there, that I have really not seen anywhere else sense.
You know what, this is actually one of the few I didn't finish because the villain was getting on my nerves in…
Or skip an episode or two...or fast forward through his part. I actually enjoyed Jao Sao Jum Yorm at lot myself. I like shows where they are a couple for most of the show and not just the last few episodes.
Omg, I was exactly like that! This is actually my second year since I watched my first lakorn but I only started…
Me too. Since I have been watching so long I have seen so many cases of subs being ripped off. It is hard not to watch on some of the pirate sites because they are all right there, but I too try to keep with the original source. The community lost so many subbed lakorns when VIKI got rid of their fan channels. Lakorns were the hardest hit. I've been glad to see more turn up on Netflix, but the entertainment industry as a far way to go as far as I'm concerned. However, I am sure part of the problem is Thailand it self. The country is so censored and restrictive that I am sure they are hard to deal with, but things are getting better.
I really enjoyed your article. Well done! I'm new to lakorns myself. My first lakorn was Full House Thai which…
Prissana 2000 is also one of my favorites. I like quite a few of the older lakorns, mainly I think for their historical value and that they are usually dialog driven. Ban Saithong 2000 was very good as was Massaya 2000. Ngao Asoke 1999 and Wanida 2010. I don't like any of their remakes of these shows as well as I liked these versions. Another favorite is Kwarm Lub Kaung Superstar Thai Drama - 2008, 35 episodes.
My most recent favorite is Nahark Kaew. The actors were great, and not over the top and there were so many sweet and tender scenes. I was a pleasure to watch.
My favorite Push show is Wannueng Jaa Pben Superstar 2015. Another good one that no one has mentioned yet is Tra Barb See Chompoo 2018.
I have 161 lakorn listed on my completed drama list , I know I have watched more but I didn't start recording here for quite a while after I started watching them.
Lakorns are an acquired taste for most of us from Western cultures. The class distinctions and discrimination by sex and class is quite shocking in some cases. The acceptance of Gay men actors who get good roles and play along the mainstream actors is also different for quite a lot of us older folks. I have watched quite a few of the BL lakorns too, and surprisingly enough most are more romantic than the male female Thai lakorns and tastefully produced.
I think what attracted me in the first place to Lakorns was the vast cultural difference than the culture where I grew up. (Texas USA) I have found that quite a few of the India shows are as abusive to women and I have never been able to get into them. So, if you are venturing into Lakorn's for the first time, start with the more recent shows as they will be less grating on your sensibilities regarding the treatment of women/classes and then work your way back. You will be surprise to see just how much the treatment of women has progressed since 2000.
I is also interesting to see the progression and changes of what is accepted and what is not just watching the older versions of some shows like Ngao Asoke and then their remakes. At any rate I do enjoy lakorns and if you have any questions or want any recommendations I will be glad to help.
The hardest part for me in finding lakorns subbed is the spelling of the shows names. They are often spelled a little different everywhere you look and some of these search engines are not intuitive enough to figure out what you are actually looking for....LOL. Enjoy the hunt.
I completely agree with you! Yanxi was phenomenal! By far the best drama I watched last year and 2018 had good…
The only two shows that came close to effecting me this much this last year were My Mister and The Story of Ming Lan. I might be booed for heresy but I even liked it MUCH more than Nirvana in Fire.
I will try Yanxi some time in the future. I need to find some free time because I like to binge watch dramas that…
Good plan, but prepare yourself for a great trip, be sure to have snacks, tissues, bitch slapping techniques practiced and make sure you plan frequent trips to the bathroom so you won't have an accident when you unexpectedly laugh yourself silly. This show has it all.
You really missed out on the Story of Yanxi Palace. I don't normally like historical dramas but this one has turned out to be one of my all time favorite shows. It was never boring or over the top.
I agree whole-heartedly. I hate love triangles. They also delay the good couple time. My favorite dramas are ones that feature a couple together for most of of the drama. Like Boss and Me.
He was a major heart throb. I think he was in a Gigit movie too and that may have been where I saw him first. I probably watched the shows as reruns when I was around 10. But I though he was just wonderful.
I'm old my first love was Dr. Kildare (1961–1966) Richard Chamberlain was the actor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpS-5821I0I This is the first episode...Black and White folks...thats all we had. Only one TV station too.
A recap of the first episode for those who want eng sub!!!https://owllyramblings.wordpress.com/2019/02/03/i-hear-you-ep-1-recap-first-look-and-opinions/
How wonderful! I watched raw and enjoyed, but having your recap really helps. Like I knew he was laying down conditions, but had no idea what they were...LOL Again, thank you!
