I still remember how some international viewers ignored her whole career and said she should feel lucky and grateful…
I never even meant to imply it was Xiao Zhan fans who said negative things about Ren Min.
Re-reading my comments above, I only ever talked about "viewers" I've come across on MDL and Disqus, never "Xiao Zhan fans".
Kind of sad about the accusations that I'm a troll or trying to participate in a fanwar because I'm way too old for that... I'm just a casual drama viewer who wouldn't call myself a fan of any particular actor or actress, so obviously fanwars don't interest me either. Discussions I do like, fanwars are for the young and zealous fans π€£ I only make comments on what I see, not more or less.
Still curious, though, who you suspect I'm a fan of?
My watchlist looks like crap because I don't care enough to maintain it. As you can see, I don't even have any completed shows on there for a variety of reasons... so please don't read too much into it.
And people used to complain about that too no? They keep saying her roles are similar, her hairstyles similar.…
The ageism starts with the industry. I wished viewers who criticize actresses for their age understood that.
Many FL roles are characters under the age of 30. Actresses who are older than that don't have a lot of options: either they audition for roles "not meant for them" and risk the audience's criticism or they play mothers, aunts and empress dowagers aka supportive roles that don't pay as much. Or they can sit around and wait for FL roles suitable for their age but who would do that? Everybody needs to put food on their table after all.
I hope the costumes are better in S2. I pretty much loved everything about S1 except the costumes and Li Qin.
Years later and I still don't understand the numerous complaints about Li Qin and her character Lin Waner.
The worst thing I can say about her is that she's boring because she's just sweet and nice and not a cool, badass character. She doesn't even have a lot of screentime to really make the viewers like or dislike her, but they act like she dragged down the show.

I actually liked Xiao Zhan's performance in this drama (and only because I think he got more material to work with and the script was strongly biased towards him), but your last sentence still made me laugh because it's unfortunately so true π€£
In this particular case, Ren Min isn't even a total newbie actress who landed the main role out of nowhere and Xiao Zhan isn't some seasoned veteran actor who's "out of her league" even though that's what some viewers mistakenly believed.
Sometimes I'm afraid to read the comments of a drama starring a popular (among international fans at least) actor with a lesser known actress because 9 out of 10 times, her role is torn to shreds and nitpicked from the first to the last episode and barely anyone defends her because she has fewer fans and everyone's only rooting for the ML role.
Seeing actorsβ fans on weibo complaining about the coloring which makes their skin too white and unnatural.…
I'm glad they complained. There's a limit to everything, after all.
While the beauty standard is fair skin, I'm sure the average person wants to see actors with naturally-looking fair skin on TV... and not the blurry white skin color filters that are used way too much in idol dramas these days. Some filters are so strong, even the facial features look blurry π
Just scrolled through the comments and was reminded once again of why I stop reading comments on mdl when the…
I still remember how some international viewers ignored her whole career and said she should feel lucky and grateful she got the chance to act alongside a world-famous, handsome top actor β as if she was a total nobody with no experience and no previous works under her belt before she got casted in this drama π
Although I admittedly didn't know Ren Min before The Longest Promise, I still found those comments really disrespectful.
And not to mention all the awful comments on her appearance... even though there's nothing wrong with how she looks like and it was a perfect match for her kind of role!
Did anyone else watch this drama solely for the villain and was it worth it? Does he have a lot of screentime or should I just watch fanmade videos of this character? π
And unexpectedly, I ended up liking Little Orchid's character even though I usually feel neutral towards cute and adorable FLs!
Yes, she can be naive and silly sometimes and I get why some viewers are put off by her high-pitched voice, but in the most crucial situations, she always showed a great amount of understanding, kindness, selflessness and inner strength and I really loved her for it. Her relationship with the ML was surprisingly equal too despite them being total opposites of each other.
I have no idea how I'm ever going to get over this amazing drama π₯Ί
That user posted even more disrespectful comments in another thread and got thumbs up for them too. Yikes π¬ Those people have so much disdain for Koreans but still take time to watch Kdramas. Make it make sense please.
Itβs been my observation that the audience that rates dramas on this platform is unnecessarily harsh (imo) on…
I haven't made the same observation yet but I've noticed the overwhelming preference for dramas revolving around romance.
Other people are free to like what they like but personally, I'd love to see more dramas with FLs in platonic relationships with MLs. They can be best friends, siblings or colleagues instead of a couple. That would be a welcome change to some of the mediocre romance plots that only consist of a string of cheesy romantic tropes everybody has already seen a hundred times π€£
all i want to said don't apologize or feel bad for the fl if she commits suicide in real life bc if she does it's…
Yeah, some of the comments are going overboard. They're not just criticism but outright hate.
On the other hand, I doubt any actors and agencies come to MDL and read our comments that we post in English, so whatever we write doesn't actually affect them. I think they're more interested in Korean websites about K-dramas and opinions of the Korean audience. I really hope the latter are not leaving hate comments in Korean where the actress can actually read them.
I think it's not supposed to be a very serious drama.
Everything from the costumes to the CGI and exaggerated acting are a bit cheesy and campy. The split screens and villains announcing their special attacks are very reminiscent of cartoons and comics for a younger audience, so you're not far off with calling it a children's movie.
I enjoy the drama for what it is, namely a campy fantasy story, but I get it's not for everyone.
Although it definitely ended on a hopeful note for all 3 main characters, the fleeting nature of their friendship was kind of depressing to watch. On the other hand, I understand it's a pretty realistic depiction of friendships between young people.
I guess, I connected more to the characters than the characters to each other, so when they all left at the end to move on with their lives separately as if they never knew each other, it felt like they were leaving ME, lol.
Duoduo is his kindred spirit. Wan'er is his soul mate.I feel as if people really don't recognize why Wan'er is…
Exactly, I agree with you.
It's not necessary to keep comparing the female characters to each other like it's some kind of competition. They're all equally important and all occupy a different role in the male lead's life. Waner's sweet and kind nature is as valuable as Duoduo's and Si Lili's smart brains and badassery.
I feel like some people have higher expectations for Waner, like wanting her to be a cool and strong character, because MDL mistakenly labels her as a female lead when in reality, she's just a supporting character like the other women in the drama.
Of course he isnβt standard - he is extraordinary! πBut I think I get what the person who said it meant.…
I think editing selfies is way more popular than plastic surgery!
I'm currently on vacation in China and (surprisingly?) haven't seen any artificial-looking faces here, even though the internet made me believe there would be a lot. I've seen hot guys but they're hot in a natural way, without skin-smoothening filters or anything π
