Speaking of the side characters... They indeed aren't nearly as appealing as the leads. Though as the story…
But also because they were in relationships with these horrible people which made them realised they have yet to meet better people in their life - and they did meet the right people in the end! :)

You're right about what you said with Tang Ming... he was too indecisive though not fundamentally a bad person. I was also pretty pissed when he got mad at Zheng Chu the few times without getting the facts right first. It was unbelievable. So you'll probably be pleased to watch the development eventually...~

27ep version is shortened to 26 but latest eps were 1hour long. His shitty aunt still cont bothering her in the…
I feel pity for Xiao Qiu too but I wasn't angry about her outcome though it really do suck - since her death served a real purpose for everyone around her, including Su Mang and Zheng Chu - and also actual character development for both Shanshan and Tang Ming. (And frankly, I am lowkey more satisifed to see this than a happily ever after with Tang Ming because he needs his lesson learnt about not being decisive enough).

ikr Zheng Chu's family did Su Mang so much injustice. Zheng Chu's aunt is still....so weird. Like geez... ok really her part of the story isn't the most convincing and I also still don't quite care about her. But I'll take whatever which allows Su Mang and Zheng Chu to be happy.

!!!!
THE ENDING ACTUALLY MADE ME REALLY HAPPY?? (idk if this will be an unpopular opinion lol)

LIKE
it could have been worse (from my past experience with similar dramas like Les Interpretes hahaha)
The resolution wasn't as bullshit as I expected but it was indeed too easy lol. Though I will really just accept anything which return me my happy Zheng Chu/Su Mang moments.

Honestly, I'm already incredibly happy that they still managed to remind me in the end what I loved so much about Su Mang and Zheng Chu. It's not easy for me to get this devoted to any drama pairing throughout the drama, so they are really special to me. I will really miss them!

Also, my two cents about the drama in general for people who may need an assurance: This drama has no plot - we've all got to admit, except it's like a lot of other romcoms which are just about how the leads find their ways to each and live a happily ever after. But what's truly strong about this drama, in my opinion, is its refreshing lead characters and dynamics. I can watch them all day just interacting with each other. It's a character-driven story. So if you're expecting to love it for anything else or you're very particular about writing, it's kind of hard, and may not be the story you're looking for.

And for people who love the drama for Zheng Chu and Su Mang, you have to pull through the not-well-handled crisis somewhere towards the end. I hope the ending is as rewarding for you as it is for me.

I am probably the only person that's going to say this, but I actually really like this drama LOL *scuttles…
I was still hanging on to the second half without one bit of intention to drop it...so yeah. It was painful only because of the severe lack of logic and mostly frustrating and unreasonable people, but some of the things (especially Cheng Jia Yang) made me pull through regardless~ The ending was pretty terrible for how it ruined my good feelings for the main pairing which I was quite fond of. :(

I think it's got bad reviews probably for the same reasons here, in which people enjoyed the first half but the second half was pretty much ruined. Apart from Yang Mi's star power at work, the drama isn't 100% insufferable anyway~. I think Huang Xuan's charm of his performance and character also played a big role in the good viewership. I witnessed the whole popularity rising for Huang Xuan because of the drama, which is awesome.

The crisis I mean by all the ~we can't be together because of the opposition from the family~ and yeah the pregnancy is the major reason behind that. But it was never an issue for either of the leads until Zheng Chu's traditionalist family decides to be a dick and oppose their relationship just because the child isn't Zheng Chu's. Though it should be revealed soon that he's actually the biological father. I would dislike the idea that they can only receive blessings from his family only if the child is his. So I hope the development don't turn out to be that.

I love Back to 1989! But I don't think the trope is really the same as Across the Ocean even though both involves pregnancy?

I have to admit there isn't really much of a solid plot going on for this drama except to watch the leads' interact and find their way to get together happily ever after.

Oh yeah, to specifically answer whether the OTP's writing will get better.... for now, I can only say.... no... It's indeed I'm slightly disappointed how they are written to handled the crisis between them. They're really just good for their interactions and refreshing dynamics, but the problem-handling is admittedly still not that well done. So no... :(

But there are still 4 more episodes to see how they continue to deal with it. I will put my verdict when I finish the drama. :)

I'm currently 24 episodes in for the 27-episode cut version. The side stories will continue to be so-so, more or less - some parts does gets better, some stagnates or get more frustrating.

The main driving force and attraction is really the leads... so if you don't largely enjoy them, it may not be the most enjoyable thing to you? But personally I find their bantering interesting and entertaining, and still appreciate the drama for the leads a lot like many others do (despite their recent development). It really depends on what you are getting out of it. It's understandable that it's probably not the thing for everyone

((I'm not sure about it mimicking an overrated kdrama... I don't really watch kdramas but I somehow still feel this doesn't remind me of any kdrama...?))

Just let me bitch slap Zheng Chu's aunt..... ugh can't she shut up about asking Su Mang to find the kid's father. Why can't Su Mang's child live without a father? Geez.

The whole Tang Ming weddng fiasco is so stupid I had to skip over.

And I spy new brotp Zheng Chu and Fei Yi. Ahhhh Fei Yi is really a good person !!

Tbh it is Zheng Chu/Su Mang moments which makes the drama, but now that they're put on hold because of the crisis between them, things get kinda draggy...... :/ I hope they won't drag out their problem until the last minute because nothing has really been solved or has progressed in these few episodes already, and it's just them pushing and pulling repeatedly - so they should really do something. Sighs.

Speaking of the side characters... They indeed aren't nearly as appealing as the leads. Though as the story progresses, some of them like Guo Guo and Su Chang do get more character depth/development or they get slightly more likable.

I couldn't stand Guo Guo (I'm just /lol r u srs/ every time anyone says she's adorable) but as Su Mang pointed out, she's actually really just candid and innocent - which I agree, though I still can't stand how willful and irresponsible she can be. As compared to other characters like Zheng Chu's aunt, Chen Shan Shan and Su Mang's ex-husband (is2g have anybody wondered how Zheng Chu and Su Mang even managed to be in relationships with these two horrible people respectively?), at least Guo Guo and Su Chang have some redeemable traits.

But I'm liking Fei Yi more in recent episodes! They better not screw up his character.

Also a good thing I watch the cut version because I don't get to see so much of the side characters - the boring parts~ I still largely fast forward through the side characters, and just get a gist of their storyline, unless they are of interest. :p

oh noooo you're not the only one!!

I will forever have a soft spot for this drama because of its focus on the interpreter profession + it got me interested in French - I really like this premise and focus which haven't really been done by other dramas.

And the first half was really good - I was following the drama since it just started airing till the end - the screwed up development really did threw me off. :( I would really love to recommend this drama to people - and give it a better rating than what I did - if not for the second half. :(

I cant stop myself checking raws on yt for this drama! Chemistry is great and after watching/re-watching some…
You're right! One of my favourite things is definitely how their relationship is built on friendship and lots of interactions, because I can never quite get those 'love at first sight' love stories.

Zheng Chu is one of the sweetest and most caring male leads. I just so adore him~

Am I the only one who found Chen Chuan extremely cringeworthy? Yes, I agree there are times when he redeems himself…
same :)

Is there a lot of romance in this drama?:)
Actually, this is pretty heavy on romance. There are quite a number of pairings, and are mostly likable. It's just that there's also a good mix of non-romance like the parts about Ban Shu and her students.

I haven't watched Female Prime Minister so I have no idea which one has more romance in comparison.

Person Jiang Chao
Just because of his ideal girl, I dislike him. I don't like men that think that a girl should stay at home…
Not his fan or anything, but to be fair, I think it might be a matter of the inaccurate translation? The bracket says 宅女 which refers to girls who LIKE/PREFER to stay at home. Not that he wants/forces the girl to stay at home all day. I'm only referring to what's written here on the profile. Though I wouldn't say the same for having a type in girls for what they wear...
