no chemistry, that’s insane, these 2 just became one of my top couple… after LLTG and SOKP, i struggled to…
IMO, they don't respond to eachother like two people who are attracted. When they get close, there's no pupil dilation, or changes in breathing.... they just act like two platonic friends that don't raise eachother's heartrate. This can happen sometimes because the actors aren't attracted to eachother, or because there's too many people on set during intimate scenes, or because one or both of them have RL bfs/gfs and won't let themselves get too into their role, or whatever....
I think ML and FL are hot, but they don't look hot for eachother.
This might be good, but I tried a few episodes and I just can't with the Zhao Zhi Wei playing an ML. I can't take him seriously enough to continue this, I can't see him as hot after that L&P role.
IMO, this was bloody awful. The actors were all good. The fight scenes were all fairly good. But there was no kilig at ALL, no chemistry between the leads at all, no chemistry between the second leads either, the story was depressing in much the same way as 'Rise of the Phoenixes' or 'Scarlet Heart Ryeo' in the sense that they take two happy people living a nice life, and use the storyline to ruin them, shatter their psyches, bruise their spirits, and take almost everything away from them till all the joy and exuberance is sucked out of their personalities. It dragged like crazy, lots of good characters die, the mains fight so hard with eachother its a miracle they still love one another... and they fight like this multiple times. The kiss scenes are terrible. The characters emotions are difficult to fathom and get behind. The cgi was kind of slapdash. The death scenes were often too gross to belong in anything tagged "romance".
I freakin hated it. I love Kai. But I just totally hated this. 6.5/10 for effort, because there was a lot of effort put into the show, it just fell so flat in so many ways.
(Edit: Less than 24 hours have elapsed since I left my comment, and look how many opinion police have barged in to correct my Wrongthink. Very stunning and brave. I look forward to my upcoming struggle session.)
I saw some people online saying this was his first self-dub? Dunno if it was or not, but maybe that's why it's hard to imagine that it's really him. However.... it is really him.
FL was miscast, and the mix of darksexy mysterious dangerous, with comedy and silly business, was not something I was a fan of. The writing was littered with moments of extreme suckage, which gave the whole production an amateur feel. Also the FL is a liar. She lies all the time like it's nothing. I guess it's not all that bad, as the ML is a fox, and foxes are known for conniving and guile, so it fits with the story and characters that the silly FL is trying to trick a trickster. I just am not a fan of lying FL's.
However, that being said.... the ML did some really good acting, and the drama did have quite a few finer moments too. The pacing and story progression were just right for a short-length and it flowed along really nicely, leaving me absorbed in the story til the end.
I would give it a 7.5, but I'm knocking a half a point off for the bad acting FL and the mediocre kiss scenes. So final score is 7 from me.
This drama was soooo good. Although I have my qualms about Xie Wei (he terrifies fl, scares her then when he falls…
When you are ready for a new drama, may I humbly suggest Legend of Shen Li. It's a total blockbuster, so many big names are in it, the cgi doesn't suck, and it has a really nice HE. Less spicy than SoKP..... but more funny tho. It might take your mind off the withdrawls.
I'm in episode 29. I can't stand xue shu at all I never hated and disgusted by a character more than her. i cried…
>I will finish the remaining episodes fast
I would resist the temptation to do that.... the emperor doesn't die til basically the end. The upcoming episodes are the best episodes, try to enjoy them and not get too frustrated just because you can't stand bird-nose. I hate her too but soon you won't care because Xie Wei will sweep you right off your feet. PATIENCE.
You're not the first person who's gotten to ep 29 and been like "what the hell am I still doing here watching this?!?!" But trust us, you are just about to where it starts to get really really good.
CURRENTLY ON EP5 AND I AM BORED TO DEATH. THEY TALK TOO MUCH SOMEBODY HELP MEEEE
SoKP is dialogue-driven way more than action driven. If it were me, I'd maybe give it 3 more episodes, and if you still aint feelin it, then drop it or put it on hold. This drama requires a lot of patience to get the payoff.
I gave it an 8, which for me is pretty good for a short-length. The FL is a really good actress and the ML is a really good actor, the script was tropey but at least it was somewhat engrossing and interesting. The production value was better than most c-dramas, the style and aesthetic was not bad. This one was an angst/spice brand of romance and the kisses were fairly awesome. I liked it.
Not engaging for some reason. Maybe everything was just too far fetched and taking itself too seriously to really suspend disbelief and feel immersive. Music is horrible, like knocking back a half a bottle of Ny-Quil PM.
Basically stupid. I gave it a 5, because both the leads were hot and put some effort into their performances, they had great kiss scenes. But there was nothing for them to work with, it's the short-series equivalent of elevator music. (Well.... aside from the bathtub scene, which was fire....)
Not bad atall. I give it a 7.5, which for me is a solid score for a short-length.
Whoever was coordinating the music for this i'm sure was well-meaning. But it was oblivious and tone deaf. The music is sort of lilty and classic, you know... snoozer music. Easy listening for taking a nice nap... pretty light. But. The ML is really darksexy hot, this demon thing he has goin on is really vampy and kumi and he gave a fairly sexy performance. He deserved better background music.
So... this might be one of the c-dramas that fits into the category of "dramas that are five times better with the sound muted and Type O Negative's 'Love You To Death' playing on repeat instead'.
But aside from the uninspired music, this was pretty damn good. It just makes you wish it was longer with a bigger budget and sexier kiss scenes. But everything else was pretty much on point. Their budget constraints were very limited, so it does have a bit of a hokey 'Xena Warrior Princess' feel to it. It's good anyway. If it were me, I would have gone for a darker visual aesthetic, used more blacks and reds. But it was fine. They went with more of like a blue/green/white vibe.
I just got done watching Kang Lan Ye in Playing House. So to see him do a different role as the fox demon with two personalities, he's actually a really good actor, and will just keep getting better with more experience. Wang Zi Ming also had some really excellent scenes in this, he is really funny and also a gifted young actor I hope to see someday with a long successful career. I think he has the talent, and just needs more experience and a chance to shine.
No one's reviewed this yet, so I moved my original comment into a review instead. Basically, it was really freakin good. Not enough kisses, but other than that, kind of hard to find much fault with it. Rewatchable.

I give it an 8.
