currently on ep7, i didn't feel attached in this drama yet. someone please convince me to not drop this drama…
If you like dark/antihero/morally grey ML's this one is hard to beat. If you drop, you're gonna miss out on some serious fire that ignites between ML/FL in the later episodes. You're already 7 eps invested, if you drop now that's 7 hours wasted, ya might as well go all the way, and at least get the payoff that's coming!
I just tried to get over it with A Journey To Love.... hated it so much, gave it a 5.5 rating and am back here…
Didn't end well is putting it mildly, yes :P I fell hard for Yu Ning when I was watching The Long Ballad, so I watched it just for him, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as TLB. No chemistry between the leads in AJTL, imo. Too goofy, too draggy, and much more action/intrigue than actual romance.
imo, the ML and FL here act like an old married couple right from the start and have about as much chemistry as a room temperature bowl of oatmeal. I don't think that was either of the actors' fault, I just think the pairing of the two of them together was a bad decision, and Yu Ning shouldn't be taking rom-com roles, he should do tempestuous, serious romances.
For those who were obsessed with this show like me, have you found a new cdrama that you really enjoyed ? I haven't…
I just tried to get over it with A Journey To Love.... hated it so much, gave it a 5.5 rating and am back here contemplating a rewatch of SoKP because I can't think of anything else good. @Arbaz Akhtar recc'd Rise of the Phoenixes, but it doesn't end well for the spicy couple in that one apparently, and also the dubbing is so so bad so I don't think I can bring myself to watch it RN...
So there's that. I watched this because I fell in LOVE with Yu Ning after watching his performance as the 2ML in The Long Ballad, where he plays the love interest of LuSi, the 2FL. He was SO FIRE in that drama, holy god. So I had high hopes for this drama.
But this one wasn't good, in so many ways. In this drama {politics/martial arts/swordfights/ intrigue/battle scenes} was the main dish and the romance was just the side dish. All the romantic parts felt cheesy, lacked chemistry between the leads, were disgustingly gratuitously sweet and "romantic". The drama had ZERO spice, and ZERO kilig. The 2FL, who is adorable and a powerhouse actress, was given a storyline that could easily have been written as a fiery spicy romance, but instead she was given a cold, loveless marriage to a really really hot interesting guy. What writers decided on that?
This show alternatvely took itself too seriously, and then didn't take itself seriously enough. It was basically stupid. I blame everybody EXCEPT the actors, who despite the stupidity of the writing, direction, production.... all gave very commanding performances and did their best.
For example, the FL is awesome, and the ML is awesome, but they should never have been cast together, because there's no heat coming off their shared scenes together. They don't have chemistry. LuSi and Yu Ning in The Long Ballad were straight FIRE together.
It's also draggy as hell. I fell asleep multiple times, skipped huge 20 minute chunks at a time in spots, and missed NOTHING but spear throwing, sword fighting, and memory montages.
And in the end what did I watch it for? Zero payoff for my patience and investment of time. Who exactly was their target audience here? I was thoroughly disappointed, and wouldn't recc this to anyone except a diehard Yu Ning fan. My rating: 5.5
This childish pouting Virgin routine is cultural. Seen it a dozen times. Think Hello Kitty and all the anime puppets…
See?! You like bold sassy independent FL's and even you liked HL!!! It was a friggin masterpiece! Victor Ma, omG!
I like all sorts of FL's but my favorite type is super cute, but honest and real... and also not dumb. I don't care if she's passive and kind of impractical or dingbat, but she can't have a low EQ and can't be a game-player thats not genuine. I think my favorite FL's were from Devilish Joy and It's Okay Not To Be Okay. Both were very cute, but very honest and real.
I think aside from baby-girl, the one other thing that pisses me off to no end is when the FL just lies like it's nothing. "Where'd you go yesterday?" "Nowhere I was home sick with a cold." It's like bitch just tell your man where tf you went! Aiyaaaaaaahhhhh. Lying is not cool. There are even some FL's that lie all the time about the dumbest most trivial shit, but if their man lies to them, here comes the self-righteous fury and they're just total hypocrites. When FL's are like that, I always end up rooting for the guy to break up with her, lol.
But anyways yeah the chinese baby-girl routine often strikes me as fetishistic and kinky to the point that it's like... deeply gross and pervy. Like yall need counselling. A LOT of counselling.

Yeah there's a thread of thought running through that culture that says if a girl knows too much about independence it must mean she has an inept father. I try to get past it when I'm watching one of those dramas with the infantilized FL's but it's not easy.
I did really like Hidden Love, and Rosy is doing the chinese-baby thing in that, but she kept it natural and toned down and I could overlook it. But there are a lot of other dramas where it's so over the top and seems incredibly contrived and I just can't take it. It's disturbing.
The original writer wrote it based on Phj. He was chosen from nation wide voting. His scenes was cut out so much…
understandable. It took me 3 tries to finish it. I kept dropping because of reading comments/reviews and the fact that it's really hard to get hooked into it, it's hard to tell where the story is coming from at first and where it's going.

Yes. It's not enough to totally ruin the show, but it's noticeable. It's like the 2FL and 2ML are both expressive and easily fall into a habit of overacting. Their looks are overtly gorgeous.
Then you have the ML/FL and they are both have a very natural, subtle acting style that lends itself to complex characters better. They are both kind of passively gorgeous.
This ends up clashing. It's so korean for a drama to be hesitant about going too dark. The ML is giving a dark performance, and the FL is following his lead beautifully. The 2ML/2FL are "lightening up" the drama when it's not needed. I don't really think they grasped soonkki's brand of humor. But anyways. The darker the ML gets, the more they interject the show with the 2ML and 2FL. It's sort of incomprehensible why they did this, it really does seem like the director/producer were TRYING to ruin what makes the show good. Like the drama was fighting against itself. It's weird.
But there was something cool in the way that Seo Kang Joon started toward the end, to match Park Hae Jin's level of acting in the scenes they shared. He just mirrors whoever he's acting against at their pace and their tone. But that just ended up making things seem even more jumbled up and confused, as you can see by the insane amt of people complaining that the 2ML syndrome was so bad for them they hate the drama now, or dropped it.
Aigoo.
If you watch it, you are just going to watch Park Hae Jin play this incredible character that unfolds slowly in layers. The end of the drama has nothing to do with the relationship with the FL, nothing to do with the plot or the side characters. They ended it where they ended it because they had finally peeled back ML's last layers and you see him for who he truly is. But when you go in thinking it's a pure romance, and that it's about this relationship, then you get let down at how they ended it with the openness and abruptness that they did.
I can't think of anything that deserves a remake more than this story. Maybe even like 3 or 4 or 5 remakes, like BoF :P It would take a lot of talent for an actor to portray the character well, and the FL is really cool, any actress would want to play her.
i honestly would not consider him a red flag, considering the fl is scared of him because she misunderstood him…
>He’s grey, he’s sick, he’s in a sense mentally not well.
Okay, now that's a good point, and makes me wonder, if I rewatched it, if he does ANYTHING red-flag when it's not snowing outside, and I dont' think he does, right? So I think it's possible that if the behaviors only happen when it's snowing, then maybe he's not red-flag.
>And not once he tried to interfere with FL and ZZ’s relationship. At best, he cooked a banquet of sour food to let her know he’s jealous but he didn’t force her to eat it all.

ya gotta be in the mood for it, I think.

Hmmm now that is a very good point.
All right, maybe he's gray. idk.
