I don't understand the rating, this drama is SO GOOD. I'm so glad to have found something that can fill the hole that Guardians of the Dafeng has left.
This season is different than season 1, it's darker and more personal, but the humor is still there, as are the intriguing relationships. Personally, I love all the new characters, they're just so interesting. I'm especially impressed by Chen Wenqi, she's incredible for an actress of her age! Her portrayal of Chen Duo is so heartbreaking. But all the performances this season are once again top-notch. Also, I don't mind the new actor playing Zhuge Qing, I think he does a great job. I guess the main reason why he's less carefree here is not because he's a bad actor but because this season takes a deep dive into his ambitions and insecurities and is, as I already said above, a lot darker than season 1 was.
Anyway, I couldn't be any happier with this season. The only issue I have with it is the fact that there are only 13 episodes, though I'm glad they're longer this time. π
if you only knew how silly the comments are against this drama and therefore ranking it 1,2, 3....
I can imagine. I witnessed the same thing happening to Fangs of Fortune recently, which took about a dozen episodes to really get going β but when it DID, the drama hit you like a freight train and didn't stop until the very last episode. Sometimes it takes TIME for a story to really unfold, and although I understand the people who don't have the patience to invest that time, I think it's still kind of a missed opportunity on their part.
How does this drama keep getting better and better with each new episode? This will be easily my first 9-10/10 (depending on how the rest of the season is done) drama this year, it's just so good. π
To all the newcomers who think this is going to be "only a comedy wuxia drama" after watching the first couple of episodes: it's really anything but.
It's the adaptation of a novel set in the DMBJ universe. Even if they're not "officially" BL, they're usually…
They belong to the same clan, the Zhangs, that's why they share the same name. It's a pretty big clan with several branches, though. :)
DMBJ (Dao Mu Bi Ji) or "The Grave Robbers' Chronicles" is a book series by Xu Lei, who is also a screenwriter for The South Bureau. Most of the books have been adapted into a series called "The Lost Tomb", with different actors portraying the same set of characters in each season. The most popular drama/season in the franchise is "Ultimate Note". If you've seen that one, you know what to expect in terms of gayness from this universe.
The South Bureau is a spin-off of the main series with characters that don't/barely appear in the main series.

The queerness comes through between the lines of this drama in redoubled volume after you've watched it once -…
Yes! To all of this. Thank you! I couldn't have put it into words better myself. π§‘
Wen Xiao works for me best in a poly relationship with both men, at least better than only her and Zhao Yuanzhou. But even then, the whole thing between Zhuo Yichen, Zhao Yuanzhou and Li Lun still has a bigger appeal for me.

Absolutely! And to be honest, I unironically like Wen Xiao, but I just can't shake the feeling that she was mostly included because the gay vibes would have been too strong otherwise. Because the actual romance is between Bingyi/Zhuo Yichen and Yinglong/Zhao Yuanzhou. The way the drama is filmed it clearly favors their relationship, both in story and visually.
Saaaame. Also: writing. ππ It's been a while since I've seen a C-drama have so many active writers (most of them writing in English, instead of Chinese, which is also pretty rare) shortly after release.

Yes! And I'm kind of surprised by how many people seem to have completely missed that part? Like, I get the criticism about pacing issues etc. and everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion. But in return we got one of the (intentionally!) queerest dramas that I've ever seen produced in mainland China and that's just SUCH a rare and amazing treat.
I'm currently doing a rewatch and I'm loving this drama even more the second time around. Because now I can appreciate the non-linear storytelling with all the little hints and the foreshadowing even more, since I already know how it's all going to end. π (Same goes for the UNBELIEVABLE amount of queerness in this drama.)
I agree! It's been a while since I last watched something that left me wanting for more. Really gonna miss this…
This drama has hit me like a bullet train, I swear to God. Having been a fan of Guo Jingming's movie and drama shenanigans for a while now, I already knew before that I would love it. I just didn't expect to become completely obsessed with these characters.
I still can't believe that the three weeks of complete madness that I've experienced because of this drama will already be over tomorrow.
While I'm happy that I'll finally have the emotional capacity again to watch literally ANYTHING else after this, I'm also going to miss this specific obsession terribly. π
Hey I'm sorry to bother you guys but im currently watching the ying-yang master: dream of eternity movie and I'm…
It's similar in style and mood, the depiction of platonic and romantic relationships (not to mention the bromance), and there's also the whole 'demons among humans' theme. Boya has lost family to demons, same as Zhuo Yichen, while Qingming is rumored to have demon blood and Zhu Yan actually IS a demon. Both are stories about overcoming prejudices and learning to accept the 'other' (in this case demons). So there are a lot of parallels there. The plots are different though.

It's almost like they don't want this season to be successful enough to justify producing a third one. It's a shame.
I'll wait for the final rating until after this one has finished airing.

The only drama of his that I've seen so far is "A Familiar Stranger", but that one was pretty good. β€οΈ
And good luck with your fic! Writing is HARD. π
I think I broke my own heart when I wrote this one: π
