I rate the show by how I feel watching the show. I am not a professional critic, and I am not scoring the drama point by point as if I am an examiner. This is the drama I enjoyed most in a very long time. A thoroughly enjoyable experience from top to bottom. I am moved by the performance of the cast, particularly PEB. So if the most enjoyable show for me don't get a 10 from me, then I don't know what show would deserve one. For me, 9.1 is way underrated. And I am not alone apparently. Recent Gallup Korea poll showed that EAW broke the all time records (previously held since 2015) for the highest ratings for favorite TV show.
You have been criticizing the show, I can see; and you are free to do so. But it's a bit below the belt in now criticizing the viewers who like the show and rate the show highly, and labeling them (including me) as "lack of critical thinking".
For me, it is not overrated, and it is not overhyped. It is breaking records after records. People around the world just loved the show. We can argue all day who is right and who is wrong, but numbers don't lie. And you can't argue with numbers and real stats. And unlike shows like Squid Game where all episodes are released at the same time, and hype can create a trend to push viewerships to new heights, EAW was released over 2 and 1/2 months, and you have to follow week by week. If people don't like the show and find flaws, viewership would drop instead of rising week after week. We will be seeing some numbers released from Netflix tomorrow for the final week. And it is going the push the already record breaking viewership numbers even higher.

For the all time most watched list, it is 28 days after the release of that particular episodes. So for example for Ep 17 and 18, it would be within 28 days of Aug 20 & 21. For those who just started watching AoS now, sadly, their views for Ep 1 to 12 won't be counted, only their views for Ep 13 onwards would count. Again, this is only for the all time most watched list - and this ranking is what Netflix uses to compare popularity of the shows.
Another list Netflix releases is the weekly top 10, hours viewed for global total, and ranking for each country. For the weekly Top 10, then everyone's views regardless of how long after episodes release are counted.

Not all characters need to have a "background story", and not all needs "development". It all depend on the story and the drama. I am perfectly happy with EAW and ALL the characters. Excellent and brilliant writings and performance from my perspective. Just enough not to be draggy and unnecessary.

Just learn to ignore MDL ratings. It really doesn't mean much in the great scheme of things. I also learned not to trust MDL ratings in choosing dramas as I would have missed a lot of great dramas.
The only thing which matters is the Korean TV ratings and Netflix numbers. I will be posting Netflix numbers when they get updated, as it is exciting to see how much higher it will go with the already record breaking numbers before the final week.

Twilight has IMDB ratings of 5.3; 50 shades 4.1. So it is not comparable. Some dramas are both popular and critically acclaimed - EAW is one such example. Basically, @lilylac is expressing how she expected WYW to behave, and disagreed with the writer's version. This has nothing to do with good or bad execution.
Her example of WYW speaking her mind with her mom but not during break-up is not valid at all. WYW has no special feelings for her mom - other than knowing that she is her mom; she still feels that she was a bad mom who abandoned her. Her break-up with JH is totally different. JH is a person she cared for very much, and she knew JH still loved her very much. She felt she had to breakup because she feared JH won't get the happiness he deserved.
Of course, ideally, every characters should communicate everything and all the misunderstanding won't happen - but this is DRAMA for goodness sake. There will be incidences when feelings and events not told or communicated because of missed opportunities, missed timing, misunderstood words etc. It's a tool to hook the audience who would look forward to the finale when all misunderstanding is resolved. This was very nicely done in this drama. Sometimes it can be overdone and caused frustration rather than anticipation. But I am happy with what the writer has done with an excellent final episodes.
I'm again raising a question why the heck the villains had to go through this elaborate fake Bu-Yeon plan instead…
It's not the question of why not, it's how. Mama Jin's power must rank among the top as one of the leaders. I think you have to overpower your victim if you want to soul shift into that person unwillingly. I don't think shaman or Jin Mu has the power to do so. Actually, the better question is why not just soul shift into the King? And they can then do WHATEVER they want? But of course in dramas, most characters won't do the most sensible things as the drama would be over in a few episodes :)
