I think its great that the drama is attracting audience who prefer "this type" male lead. No need for those who can't process an emotionally mature, grounded ML.

I guess it would seem that way if you see ZL and FTY as two people fighting against each other. I don't see it that way. Again they are not fighting against each other, they are fighting agains their circumstances. If you see their every interaction as a fight, a competition between ML and FL, then that is such a waste. Yeah she played up that swindling thing but ZL did try to get their money. And ZL took her HOSTAGE in her bedroom to get money and her taking action to save herself was necessary. If you think that'S outsmarting him, think of it that way. And FTY hasn't risen to anything nor saved everyone. She is practically on a chopping board if she can't convince ZL to cooperate. And it seems like you want ZL to punish her, and scream at her or go angry all over her. But ZL is not that kind of person. If there's anything these 6 episodes have established, ZL is a green forest, a green island, thank goodness we finally have a ML who is emotionally secured and regulated.

It's for those freaking lifeless stone arches outside their gates that apparently mean more than their granddaughter's life. Crazy, I know.

I really like how they are building Zhao Ling as an honestly, great guy. And some people be seeing that as "weak" is just a sad state.

Hmmm. I never saw it that way. It was never her outsmarting him for me. I see them as means to a goal. They are both taking actions towards their own goals and it's just right now, they have very different goals. ZL just want to finish this job of taking her to the capital and get his money. FTY wants to clear her name and needs ZL for that to happen. It's not like they are competing against each other for something. And yeah, he was pissed when FTY took off with that token but he's not an asshole so he's being rational about it and just went after her to get it and her back. And him leaving Sen alone with them was not dumb. How could he have known Sen would unknowingly reveal to TY that ballad and for TY to recognize what it was? And that new maid was a curveball no one saw coming. I am looking at their actions for what they are - reactions to situations as they present themselves. It's not about being one step ahead of each other or outwitting each other. Again, they're not supposed to be competing. People don't go through daily interactions thinking that way all the time. It's not man versus woman.

I wouldn't call Zhao Ling a simp. I don't think he survived the harsh smuggling world without some backbone. The way I see it, he is tempted by the possibility of leaving his current life and actually go "legit". He seems like an ambitious man. We see that when he took on that top salt dealer's identity at the risk of gaining enemies. It's just that he never thought of going beyond his world and Ting Yun planting that seed in his head, actually having a plan for it to happen, a whole world of possibility is suddenly there. But he knows he doesn't have the know-how to navigate that world and Ting Yun does. Not that Ting Yun is doing all these for nothing. She had been very clear with her motivations and goals. Zhao Ling is smart enough to recognize that.
