I gave up! Sorry, I've seen too many Chinese dramas and this one just hasn't got anything special about it. I watched 6 episodes, so I think I've given it enough chances.
WOW! This was just what I needed to read! Loved your article! I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies, however, I'm always open to new suggestions. Romantic asian dramas can sometimes get a bit too much. May I ask where the fifth photo is taken from? The one with a woman and a man in white clothes, and a handy knife with blood on. Also, I can totally relate to that scenario where you just sit at a table, and try to not interfere with your interest of asian dramas. I usually have people around me, who only believes that there is American television, and nothing else. So you really try not to start an uproar. I don't know why it's so taboo to watch asian series or asian horror. It's like people think you have an ugly fetish or something. All in all great article!
This was really something I needed! This article was really something I could relate too! I only have one friend who knows about the full extend of my drama obsessions. I adooooore watching C-dramas and K-dramas (yeah, in that order), and also likes to listen to kpop. I'm more of a fangirl when it comes to the dramas, than of kpop idols- but I can identify with both types of fangirls. I actually find it hard to find someone in real life who especially loves asian dramas compared to someone who is in the kpop fandom. It's just not something people openly talks about. It has become the norm to watch American series, so when you start saying that you only watch asian dramas, people always look somewhat down on you. This is not the same case when it comes to kpop. In western society it has become more acceptable to like that type of music, but some will never understand the phenomenon. It took years for me to open up to my family about my music taste (when you have a dad who only listen to hard rock metal music, it's kinda the total opposite of that genre). I think they know by now that I watch asian dramas 'sometimes' but not always. It's definitely a process.
Anyway, what I wanted to say, was that this topic is highly relevant in the 'western' world with the rise of BTS and kpop products. I'm actually currently writing a paper about the rise of korean society and its impact on UK citizens. You definitely made me want to write an article about my findings, when the paper is done. Thank you for the inspira
So, i am probably the only person that likes Hase more than Hongyo. The shit in the past where Hongyo "got out…
I don't necessarily like any of the main characters, but that is what makes this drama so intriguing for me. There is so much psychological aspects behind every character, and I think the drama isn't meant to highlight what we usually see in romantic dramas. They all have various backgrounds that shapes them into the human beings that they have developed into. Hase has clearly some issues with possessive love (which haven't fully gotten described to us yet) and Hongyo hasn't learned to express his feelings correctly because no one has confronted him. When Terada got "raped" in high school, she let it slip and surely didn't confront him about her discomfort. I think the way she acts in the beginning of the drama is a result of this event. This is the only past occasion where she couldn't stand up for her own beliefs and say no. She would otherwise be extremely cheerful and open minded in class. That discomfort of not knowing how to react to Hongyo, getting into a whole new unsure experience, made him think that his behaviour was appreciated and made her self-esteem go down hill.
If you just look at the character development, these two are starting to realize their mistakes and they actually begin to talk about each others feelings instead of just physical contact (especially in ep 8). Their interactive skills are linked to their past, and that's why he is only reacting to her and she is looking for her past self through him.
You didn't miss an episode, however, I know there is a lot of unreleased/cut out scenes.
Hi RouteVenus! Thank you for your kind words! I haven't finished the drama yet, since I'm not fluent in Chinese,…
No worries! I'm not sensible with endings. Since I don't fully understand Chinese yet, I always need to accept that native speakers will know the ending before me. And also, the ending isn't the most important part for me. It's the overall story.
Meteor Garden was incredible to watch! So glad you also loved that one! And I'll try to make one of those articles as soon as possible! Just wait for it ;)
YAAAAAAAAAS! Achiara's Secret! One of the best! Loved it! My friend and I watched it together, and whenever it was Wednesday and it was raining, then we would look at each other and know exactly what the other person meant. It was hilarious! We did that for a half a year, and at my birthday, she gave me two walnuts. This was just the best gift ever haha
To pandalla008: great article, very informative, thank you for writing it!I really wanted to try this drama but…
Hi RouteVenus! Thank you for your kind words! I haven't finished the drama yet, since I'm not fluent in Chinese, I have to wait for the subs. That's why I can't tell you how it will end. It is truly a light-hearted drama throughout almost the whole drama. However, the ending episodes are a bit more serious, but not in the same way as political historical dramas (I don't know what to call them, but the ones where you always have to watch all the governmental scenes to understand the whole plot). Even though it may have an unsatisfactory ending, I still believe it's worth to watch! So give it a try nonetheless.
I was planning to make some articles about "beginner" Chinese dramas that were not "too" long, but as I read it, you want historical/wuxia. These are around 50-70 episodes, so make sure you're prepared with noodles and a nice blanket :). I will also make a list about historical C-dramas (since that is what I mostly enjoy watching), however, I need to focus on my upcoming exams - sigh*
But I can make some short recommendations here(containing spoilers of the end):
Scarlet heart (the original Chinese version) - this is my all time favourite c-drama. It was the drama that made me into a c-drama fan. It has the screen quality of its time, since it's made in 2012 (I believe). What makes this drama shine so much, is the overall development of its characters. And I loooooove her relationship with the emperor, which feels realistic for its time. It has somewhat a good/bad ending, since it's a time travelling drama. But she get's to meet him again.
The Eternal love 1 and 2 - a light-hearted story with a twist in both of them. In the first one, she has two personalities and in the second, they rewrite the story with the same cast, different plot and a rivalry between the male lead and himself (I know, sound weird). If I remember correctly the second one had a good ending. For the first season, I didn't enjoy the "mystical fantasy land", so you can either watch it or you can skip that part and continue watching the second right away (they don't mention it as much). But they are both very romantic, lot of kisses, humour and I think a happy ending.
The other Eternal love; a.k.a Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms- I believe I speak for the majority of the C-drama watchers when I say, this is a classic you MUST watch. I personally find it awesome, with an exciting plot and some of the best actors out there. BinBin is also in it, as the love rival in the beginning. The thing with C-dramas, is that they rarely end with a sweet/happy ending. Someone always has to die, basically. I love "bad" endings, since I like that little twist in the ending, but it's hard to tell you many C-dramas with a "good" ending. I don't remember this as having a "good" ending, but its a must watch either way. Great cast and story line.
If you want to give Untouchable lovers a shot, then try it. However, be aware about the plot twist in the middle. It's basically a u-turn of a plot twit. The drama actually consists of two dramas, with completely different story lines, but same cast. I enjoyed it, but had to see the drama as two dramas. Here I know for certain that it has a GOOD ending.
In contemporary though, C-dramas are more likely to have a "good" ending than bad. But out of these, I would say, watch the Eternal love dramas.
I, too, have been following this drama religiously since it started on viki and agreed with everything you said.…
Indeed a beautiful comment you left here. Couldn't have chosen better "best parts". My favourite one is 1. It made me so emotional, and I've watched the scene multiple times already.
I have been having so much fun with this drama! I am a fan of Zhang Vin Vin so that is what made me decide to…
Thank you for explaining your thoughts! Really appreciated! I agree with the fluffy and predominantly part - it indeed is. Even though it contains those elements, however, it doesn't mean it's not a great drama. It's just a different genre, compared with deeper and more serious dramas. But then again, still happy you stick with the drama, continuing watching.
I really appreciate what you had to say, and I will check it out. I thought the title sounded kind of corny, but…
Thank you for your kind words! The titels of Chinese dramas are often cringe or corny, because they have a hard time translating the original titel to english. If you think about it, there is about 3 dramas called ”eternal love”. I stopped focusing on the title loooong ago! Whenever you look at a new c-drama, make sure to read the synopsis before choosing whether you want to watch it or not.
And yes, the Last Empress is a marvelous drama, also top quality! Just something totally different. That’s positive, because this is much lighter than the last empress. But I truly hope you will like it!
Picked up this drama because of this article, right now I'm on episode 10 and nothing has really hooked me yet...…
Oh, I’m sorry to hear that! He should show up som enough. If you look at the episode Pictures on viki, then you should be able to figure out egen he’ll have screen time
It’s ending next week, so it’s hard to say. All I can say is that I think it will end with someone dying, but don’t know for sure. I can update you when I’m finished with it ????
