i think the whole point of this remake is that it isn't exactly the same as the chinese version. the characters…
I think the vanity is the writers bringing in 21st century values... That's why it bothers me.
Scar wasn't in C-version... I like the scar as it lays the basis for his future ruthlessness, on top of his parents' rejection and isolation... more motivation!
In C-version, they didn't emphasize his mother's rejection and father's neglect too much... It was painful, and he was cold and reserved on the exterior, didn't show much emotion... He was just very ambitious and shrewd.
Both end up being strong, ruthless rulers who inspired fear and consolidated power for the Throne.
I prefer LJK's acting and expressions ... besides he's better looking then Nicky Wu ... That's my shallow vanity being expressed...lol!
someone, remind me... does she end up with 8 or 4 or 16? ....wait...16's another historical? oh...so confused.
OK...if u really want it
****** SPOILER ALERT ***** ****** SPOILER ALERT *****
She falls for 8th.... gets scared off b/c she knows his future, then falls for 4th....
Meanwhile, 10th has fallen for her and was rejected, 13th befriends her, set to be the Emperor's concubine then was changed to his Tea-server, later he gives her to 14th, she defies emperor, rejects 14th, and gets reduced to a maid in Laundry... forgot when 14th falls in love w/ her, but he does.
Later, she gets with 4th... He does not make her an official concubine and moves her into his residence so he can see her whenever he wants -
After misunderstanding w/ 4th, she marries 14th so he can take her out of the palace... he loves her, but she's still in love w/ 4th... they don't get a HEA
When she dies and is back in 21st century, she visits a museum and encounters a man who looks exactly like 4th.
In Scarlet Heart 2: 4th, 10th, and maybe others are brought back as different characters in 2011 ... She revives love story w/ 4th, partly ... I never finished it, got draggy.
i think the whole point of this remake is that it isn't exactly the same as the chinese version. the characters…
I like that idea!!...his mother actually hating him and the scar as a reflection of her own behavior!!... very true!
He has scars all over his body he is not ashamed of, or didn't try to hide...
As I said, vanity included other people's comments as well ... and stupid lines like 9th worried about muscle definition (such lines of vanity cheapen the story imo)
His parents' rejection bothered 4th in C-version, but it wasn't portrayed as self-pity, just pain.
Still, I am loving 4th Prince, especially as portrayed by LJK... I think I will like both 4th and 8th much more in this version...
i think the whole point of this remake is that it isn't exactly the same as the chinese version. the characters…
@Xingmi --- I believed it to be vanity b/c of his reaction when Hae Soo saw his scar and his 1st instinct to hide it...Followed by her confirmation that "even in Goryeo people only like beautiful people" (i.e. like 21st century plastic-surgery-obsessed S.K.)
Also, one of the Princes, I believe, mentioned 4th was ostracized due to the scar, not his scary personality.
If he was worried about people seeing him as a monster, he would not have slashed the horse in that way, nor would he promote himself as wild beast hunter...He likes scaring people.
I like the fact that he he would have internal scars from how he received the external scar. His mother's rejection should be the bigger issue, the scar is the reminder of it (hmm!... maybe he's more ashamed of her rejection than the scar....that would be a better reason for him to hide it.)
Also, I really like the idea of the scar as an added reason for him to be cold and ruthless. I don't want him feeling self-pity as he does now, I'd rather see him hold it in and turn vengeful, like a true monster.
Does anyone else think he looks like Joe Odagiri?...Not as good looking, o.c....
But when he first shows up on screen, at 1st glance it seems like joe.
i think the whole point of this remake is that it isn't exactly the same as the chinese version. the characters…
Change in the characters and plot is to be expected because it is a different history.
I think the complaint is that the new characters are treated a bit superficially.
Ex: 4th Prince as a future great King, should not be so vain about someone seeing his scar.
Hae Soo, just as @Marina said, is too childish/clumsy to attract the guys...she's supposed to be very clever/smart.
The rest are all too childish... etc...etc..
The success of original was due in large part to its wonderful characters.
I hope they all shape up soon...the story is bound to be intriguing!
Compared to original, this is like the Steven Spielberg version ... shallow sentimentality but w/ enough pizzazz to make a popular blockbuster.
The only thing I prefer in this version are Lee Jun Ki and Kang Ha Neul, both are wonderful in their roles!.
It is a different history, so o.c. characters will be different....
Still... am disappointed in writing of characters.... disappointed in the vanity and self-pity, and childishness .... although, 8th is just right so far.
Okay someone help me out!! I want to buy the novel of Scarlet Heart originally written by Tong Hua, in English…
I don't know if an official Eng. Translation exists ... However, the following blogs do translations of C-novels (usually ones turned into dramas) ... Some complete, some just excerpts:
Ex of Novels: Too Late to Say I Love You , Battle of Changsha, Sealed with a Kiss, Da Mo Yao (Song of the Desert, by Tong Hua), etc...
I have a few other sites that translate, but I don't have access to my storage files atm... U may try google and see if any sites for C-novel translations come up.
He was so funny in Look Mai Klai Ton.... He is supposed to be an evil lowlife brother, but the way Tik Klinsee played him, I could not hate the character!
---> I used to recommend this: My Only Excuse is that I watched years ago, fresh after leaving K-dramas... ... The intensity of the characters/emotions, the crazy-in-love Pr'Ek, the hate/love, jealousy/angst, the Hot main leads, the desire, the skinship ... all seemed new and fun to watch.
..... I now know better ... My apologies friends!
A Classic example to be studied as to how to do a (CRAZY) lakorn... It has every cliche/trope: Nonsensical plot .... irrational characters .... pure evil delusional N'rai .... guns/killings as if laws don't exist (Hurray Wild Wild West!) .... easily-swayed jealous Pr'ek ... love/hate ... jealousy/angst .... misunderstandings .... parents giving daughter away (But no selling women for a change) ... Unlicensed marriages ... kidnappings ... R-scene ... sudden pregnancy ... funny servants .... annoying characters ... Sudden change in personalities ... Spoiled brats ... Sudden repentance ... Karma .... drugs ... Ghosts ... Mysticism ..... amnesia ... Beautiful scenery ... waterfalls ... etc..etc... No private island though :(( Hillarious!!! XDXD
There were a few sober moments ... If you put logic aside, the main couple are very cute .... physical wrestling, and she could match him... Weir & Pinky are both sexy and lots of skinship ... Actually, the plot and character relationships could have been very interesting if handled more logicaly and w/ deeper/better writing.
--->>> Despite all that, if u can put logic aside, still Worth Watching for Weir, Pinky and their chemistry.!!!
hahaha!... Very good observation!...I like it. XD
Kind of true... both are arrogant, stubborn and very prejudiced about the other .... and here, they're competitive and must alwyas win..lol
The story is also similar, in that there isn't much action, it is mainly about interaction of well-developed characters and the banter between them.
And the only excitement is a couple that disappears together and forced to marry!
The more I think about it, the more similarities I start to see... Well, I've described it as similar to Hollywood rom-coms from 50's-60's and P&P is said to be the bases for Hollywood rom-coms!...Hmmm!
Never heard of this team..... I'm w/ you, Joo Jin Mo and Jung woo Sung, probably my top faves ... I'm fangirling over all of them actually!
Thnx for the article, fun read.
