But now he understands ZY on such a deep level and accepted that ZY became someone very important to him. This scene felt like such a helpless cry against their fate, ZYC understands the whole 'ZY the vessel needs to die by my sword'-issue, but all he wants is not to lose another person he loves!!!

but if you liked the vibe you might also try checking out the drama A League Of Nobelman, has nothing to do with demons, but is a historical bromance investigative mystery drama and there's some 'dream magic'/mystic aspects going on in later episodes and the cinematography & story for it was something I enjoyed ^^

The Song of The Moon (aquatic demons, overall the othering of demons is a main-point plus reincarnation issues of the ML & FL ^^)
If you don't mind the slower pacing of FoF you might also be ok with Mirror: A Tale of Twin-Cities (they also have a take on aquatic demons, the FL & ML are both more on the mature + introverted side)
all 3 dramas have soooome hints of a love-triangle, but just as lowkey as FoF, so rlly don't mind it at all, they all work together well anyway with some grumbling like in FoF haha these dramas don't reach the level of e.g. FoF cinematography/atmosphere, but they each were dramas I enjoyed and could easily binge ^^
Not a xianxia, but a drama that keeps me going when I have FoF withdrawel: The Storie of Pearl Girl (love it so far, all 3 leads are such a good combination (as far as I watched atm) and well written FL role! :)

I agree, but personally I didn't mention it because to me it's implied in all xianxia, the 'othering' and prejudice is often a topic in these shows when you have these different tribes or demons vs fairies 'race-issues' etc. Just like it's similar implied when you have mutant stories (which are also often queer-coded topics e.g. X-Men) :)

I think non-linear story telling just might not be your thing ^^ It wouldn't make sense to film one big flashback for FoF (since you mentioned that compared to TU) because it's not just about the main charas, it's also about unfolding the indivdual stories of the side-charas and these different situations happen over a span of like 30000+ yrs, so there hardly could be 1 linear story to begin with ^^ And all these different charas each get a spotlight in their epis so we can understand the deeper meanings behind their stories & motivations (many themes are recurring: free will/choice, grieve, 'othering'/prejudice etc). It's like a collections of stories/fables and the main charas are the red-thread leading us through it all: GJM directly stated that this show is inspired by chinese stories. the comedic bits are often a chara mask/coping mechanism you'll learn if you stick with it and sometimes just a breather for the audience, we will appreciate it down the line when it gets even more depressing lol and the drama is overall doing well considering it's even on break atm, while the other show is available, so no need to make it sound like a flop/bad director, just because it's not your thing, many other things you can enjoy ^^

It might not be your cup of tea and it's ok to pause it/drop it. But I have to say to me the pacing/filming style is similar to MJTY, MJTY actually was quite slow too in its story-telling, slowly unfolding and sometimes just an epi with lots of conversations - btw I don't mean this negative, MJTY is on of my top fav dramas, but I know some people thought it was slow/boring too haha. I think it's fitting that they say FoF was inspired by classic chinese stories, because to me it's like a story time, we get to know each side-story as if they're complete story-tales on their own and our group of misfits are the red thread that lead us through those individual stories :)
In one of the BTS iQiyi posted they already spilled out ZYC is going to transform into a demon 🤣

But they do know he tries to atone and Yichen's rough pep-talk is to give him a goal other than dying ^^

Zhang Jinran sure is too sheltered to relate directly to the other 2, but they broaden his horizon and he keeps them from going down the deep end with his little reminders and even if they don't believe in any 'goodness' like him atm, he reminds them to stay mostly legal so they can actually achieve their goals without ending themselves before their enemies.
Ml is more on the opposite of the spectrum atm (the end justifies the means), but I rlly like that Ml & SMl understand each other's plans quite well and there's a certain level of trust as long as they have the same endgoal.
Fl out here being an awesome multi-facetted chara in the middle atm, developing her own path while acknowledging aspects from Ml & SMl and in turn giving each her own influence... Another ramble of me being hyped about them XD
