It wouldn't be MDL if the comment sections weren't routinely on fire :D .....like Alice was catching all the hate before. There were some serious clashes over Backstreet Rookie not so long ago. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol comments are also currently a battleground. I'm just out here LOL over it all :P

Hahaha, agreed, most of the haters probably fall into either of two categories. Firstly, Ji Soo superfans who were waiting since forever for him to take a lead role. Secondly, the younger audience more accustomed to fluffy rom-coms, who aren't up for watching this messy story line.
I hear you about Japanese dramas being far darker and edgier. There really isn't even any comparison between J-dramas and K-dramas in terms of dark content. From my observation, Korean TV is relatively conservative and pure. Even when I was watching the Korean remake of One Million Stars Falling from the Sky, I was confident that it would never be as dark and taboo as the original story. I personally prefer this quality of K-dramas to be subtle and modest, having watched Western media for decades, it is a nice change of pace for me.
I do slightly share your frustration about the complainers making this drama seem evil incarnate, but everyone has an equal right to express their opinions here, so to each his/her own, I say.

Watch a couple of episodes and decide for yourself. I see value in watching this for Ji Soo. If I had listened to every single time MDL majority was annoyed and raising hell in the comment sections, I would have missed out on some great dramas which suited my personal taste (for example "Something in the Rain", which really spoke to me and I really liked, but it got a lot of hate on MDL). Of course there have been times when I was in the annoyed majority too :D .... but one thing I've learnt up until now is not to be swayed by the overwhelming commentary, and to decide for myself after giving things a chance.

Give it a chance and decide for yourself. It isn't the best drama of the year, but it also doesn't deserve the level of hate it is getting here. It is complicated, doesn't have the kind of perfect leads you see in rom-coms, every character is flawed, some even hopelessly flawed, I suppose it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. I watched it weekly, so I didn't feel like it was slow. From reading other's comments, I realized it might seem slow to the binge-watchers.

I think you've seen the 2nd episode already. First episode ended at Cha Joo Eun in Jung Bok Gi's office and Jung Bok Gi asking her if Cha Joo Eun is targeting her to avenge her father. In the 2nd episode, Cha Joo Eun goes to jail, comes out, there are multiple time jumps and the 2nd episode ended on the wedding disaster. Hope this clears your confusion

I second that, the whole process of how the characters plan and talk about cons is so realistic, it was freaking me out the whole time. All that documentary making talk makes it so much more chilling than if they weren't using code words. From watching the 2 episodes, it became obvious that scammers at this level would talk in code, they can't have people overhearing them and have their covers blown. It's all these attention to details that is making it so realistic. Also, the ending of second episode blew my mind. I hope more people will give this drama a chance

The Japanese drama is an adaptation of Gone Girl. The Korean version also has strong Gone Girl vibes in 1st episode

I came to the comment section to see if this is a korean adaptation of Gone Girl. I only fastforward saw half of the first episode and the Gone Girl vibe is really strong with this one

Haha. Same. This drama has an addictive quality to it. People remain stuck in toxic relationships for years, there is underlying bitter truth to this drama. People can be really selfish in real life. I guess most of us are so used to seeing near-perfect gentlemanly leads in dramas that it might be harder to accept such messy characters for most. I'm intrigued by the story, how much more over the top insane it can get, totally here for it till the end

This is a remake of the American Movie: 17 Again. From your edits, it sounds like it is fairly inline with the topics covered by the source material

Noted, thanks. I like slice of life dramas best, but a good melo can be a nice change of pace every once in a while. Every time I declare a drama genre isn't my cup of tea, I end-up eating my words sooner or later, so I've learned to never say never and am trying to be more open-minded and less biased. If I'm not into a drama, I drop it fairly quickly, so there's no harm in trying.

Thanks so much for the rec. I have watched Uncontrollably Fond already and the screenwriter's most recent work Chocolate. Hadn't realized the writer had a streak for tragedy. Very intrigued by A Love To Kill

I hear you. I'm cutting some slack on account of the sheer madness that has gone down in record time around this chap, the accomplice's identity alone must have been a real whammy for Hyun Soo, I will give him that. But still, I remain low-key mad. A few episodes back, Hyun Soo said to Ji Won that he wants to be a person worthy of her. And he fully realized that he is indeed capable of feelings, and then he cried his eyes out with Eun Ha (my fav scene so far). Those past episodes were such big character development milestones for Hyun Soo... way to throw all that progress away.

The gunshot scene was so utterly unnecessary. At this point, my greatest sympathies are with poor Detective Woo Chul, his team actively hides all kinds of super important truths from him. Cops on the raids he's in charge of get their guns filched from their very hands. What's a guy gotta do to get reliable colleagues.

Very few k-dramas have the guts to pull off an epic tragedy. The last episode is going to be rainbows all around, no doubt. This drama could have taken that rare tragedy route, a heroic tragedy would have been inline with the dark nature of this drama. Despite all my bitching, I loved the drama and I'll probably be giving it a high rating, but it could have been so much more.

Also, on a side note, am I the only one low-key disappointed by Hyun Soo. This drama spent so much time successfully convincing us that Hyun Soo is not the flower of evil, yet at the most critical moment, he would have killed BHS if the cops hadn't shown up in time. Why didn't he even think of how much his daughter needs him. And even if Ji Won had actually been dead, how could he let her down by losing control in this way. I really wish he had dropped the knife off his own accord, that would have been really fitting for his character journey. Like Ji Won said, murder is murder. Intent for murder and acting on that intent is a crime too. Identity theft and evading the police is a crime too. He should have turned BHS over to the police along with voluntarily surrendering himself.... SMH
