He's abit like the ML from MMH only his regret that triggers his time travel has nothing to do with love and instead is connected to his friend's death.
The second chance in love happens by accident since his friend coincidentally is a mutual friend of the FL's family so he gets to meet the FL before she dates the other guy.
Him loving the FL in the first life isn't due to a trivial reason but because she had unintenionally comforted him during his lowest point back when he was a student (the friend's death). It doesn't seem like love at first sight but rather curiousity/ being grateful eventually turned into love (eventhough he didn't acknowledge his own feelings since there was no point)?

The fact that the former General Xiao always wanted her to fight alongside Xiao Jue to the point that he even technically gave them their first “couple’s gift” feels even more perfect knowing how XJ is the only one in her life who constantly tries to anchor He Yan to her true self☺️

Nope. It's kind of clear to the audience that the ML likes her (but it's not creepy because he first fell for her adult version). It's not like he is lusting after her- just naturally likes her for who she is.
He doesn't do anything though- just keeps encouraging her to focus on the right path since he knows one of the reasons why her life didn't go according to plan in the first timeline was because she was distracted by the SML and easily gives up. He doesn't know that she timetravelled too so some of his actions come out as being "big brother" bossy I guess?

His mum's way of phrasing their age gap "3-4-5-6-7-8.." could be either intepretted as literally 8 years or she was just exaggerating since she had a teasing tone when she said it. Like as if to imply their age gap isn't something worth obsessing about and she's just glad that her son finally has a friend he is comfortable bringing home (she knows her as his student/ friend).
It can't be more than 5-8 years anyway i guess.
It's thought provoking in a way since the ML liked the adult version of the FL first so there's nothing worth freaking out over but at the same since they reunite when she was a HS student, some get concerned (eventhough nothing happened while she was a student).
Can you recall how the brother addresses him? That could give us a clue since the brother is at least 3 years older than GXJ. Since GXJ didn't believe Lin when he said that he was a PhD student, he can't be that old.

He's a super serious genius who lost his best friend 💀 at a young age due to a technical error his team made with one of their experiments. My best guess is that he used his trauma to dedicate his life into getting perfect results in whatever work he does and not waste time on trivial things like having casual flings- specially since the FL also was always with her dumdum BF. He didn't even cut the FL any slack when she was his subordinate in their first life 🙈
