No, it's definitely the edit. The transition from his treating her so cruelly to love story is very short/abrupt/unbelievable. Also, the love story didn't develop at all.

Yes, this is ok. The acting by FSF is good. I treat it like a suspenseful drama without violence. The misunderstanding and trust issues are on the table here.
