So tell me what you want, what you really, really want πΆ
Ooh. Cool. I am such a sucker for BSB. π Till around the early to mid-2000s, we had such awesome artists and groups. Even the one hit wonders have enduring legacy. My playlist at the time had songs from bands like The Verve, Linkin Park, Nickleback, etc. π
I agree. There is no visceral emotional tone. It feels disjointed. Forgetable. itβs all super strange to me…
I understand exactly what you are trying to draw attention towards. I do feel that cuts due to censorship may have been why the drama seems to lack a cohesive manner of storytelling. Some scenes are really well done. Some others not so much. While it took a while for me to warm up to it, I am indeed enjoying it immensely as of now, flaws and all. In my opinion, the supporting characters feel a lot more lived in than in many other dramas that I have watched. So, this is a plus. However, the scenes don't always seamlessly flow into each other.
Exactly, there was no requirement of that fake sunset scene, it was very badly edited. Honestly it felt as if…
True! I am actually invested in this drama and don't really mind some of its flaws, but the exaggerated slo-mos totally take me out of my immersion into this world. The fight scenes are some of the best I have seen, yet, some of these slo-mo shots such as them striding towards the city gates made me LMAO.
ep 19 : we all knew the confession would go down like this. ML is ready to fight for their love, I hope we really…
The director ought to have eased up on the slo-mos and wind in their hair shots. Instead of the intended effect to make them look cool, they looked ridiculous. π€£
Why would that bother you? It would not be unusual for a warrior clan to have women who also fight. I actually…
I think it'd best for us to agree to disagree. I have already explained in my replies the reasons why I think the Wei daughters-in-law wielding spears is plausible. There are different levels in the acquisition of any skill. For instance, a Shaolin monk would obviously be far better trained in Kung Fu than say an ordinary man or woman training in some basic moves of Kung Fu. π€·π»ββοΈ The former is a master while the other is a novice. However, when push comes to shove, both would probably react similarly. Also, if you remember, the eldest Song sibling despite being able to fight, didn't ever go to battle and was easily bested by Chu Yu. Yet, because the Weis needed manpower, the Song siblings successfully fought against Yao Yang's men. My point is that despite being able to fight, the eldest Song was not a good enough fighter, certainly not the type to hold his own in battle. So, the Wei ladies not going to battle makes sense given the restrictions placed on women of that time and their limited martial skills.

Yes, it's indeed true that dance is different from combat. However, in my opinion, that scene was to illustrate their familiarity with wielding those spears. Like I said, those ladies didn't grow up training to fight battles. However, their in-laws obviously taught them enough to hold off potential enemies. A skirmish in the city is wildly different from a bloody battle at the border of warring states. We also have to take into account that the arrival of Duke Hu certainly helped them to successfully do so. Furthermore, not every family was as liberal as the Chus who allowed their daughter to be a warrior. Chu Yu says multiple times throughout the episodes that she was a rebellious child who never wished to learn the ways of a genteel woman of those times.

They did allude to the Wei daughters-in-law being given basic training by their respective husbands. They are certainly not skilled enough to go to battle like Chu Yu but trained enough to self defend. When they were about to leave the Wei estate, they performed a dance with the spears of their late husbands. At the time, I did think that the scene was too on the nose, but, as it turns out, it was a foreshadowing of them banding together to hold off Yao's reinforcements. If anything, at least in this drama, they briefly laid the groundwork for what they showed in episode 17.
I just want to write about this here because I saw a few people saying the couple (Hajime & Kai) are not showing…
People also forget that they now have a kid around. Many parents/guardians may not be comfortable with PDA knowing that a tiny human may burst in on them at any time. Also, their chemistry feels very lived in. π
I donβt think they needed to be so sadistic with LY for the censors. That was by choice, a sadistic choice.…
I think it was so that there existed a clear distinction between LY of the past and the reincarnated LY of the present. To drive home the point that LY had NOT transmigrated to the present time and better sell the spiel of them dreaming about their time together. I never said misery was a requirement. I feel this way because of how they didn't leave off where the past LY was adamantly holding on to his disappearing memories of the Shen family. The makers made it a point of showing him growing old and dying all alone. Believe me, I am someone who wishes for unambiguous happily-ever-afters for the dramas that I watch even if such a positive ending defies logic. π So, for me, this ending was one of the better ones for dramas involving transmigration. I was totally bracing myself for a "they knowingly smile at each other in the very last second" kind of ending. Thank goodness, they didn't go that route.
In my opinion, as far as the final episode is concerned, the makers did the best they could with the restrictions in place. However, I do think they could have given the Lin Yan from a thousand years ago a happier story with SSG disappearing when they were well into their old age in some tragic incident and therefore "dying". Also, the Shen family ought to have "died" rather than have disappeared altogether from people's memories after living fulfilling lives in the past. The Shen family disappearance throws a lot of things into disarray, for instance, the whole story of Lin Yan seeking justice for the Cui clan, and his marriage being recorded in history. (Though one might argue that he ensured that his wife is remembered by recording his story himself for the future generations.) I guess the reason why the makers made LY of the past miserable because they didn't want to take any chances with the censors.
It's pretty evident that the present LY is a reincarnation of the past LY. Thank goodness, WYL and LYR are really good actors because the last conversation between SSG and the present LY made it amply clear that they both remember their time together. LY certainly remembers via the "dream", who he actually is and that they were madly in love with one another which is why he recognised her from the back of her head and tears up once he sees her face. In my head, they got together and married soon after. π
I'd say this is a pretty re-watchable series. In a future rewatch, one can simply skip to the interesting parts and fast forward through the rest. I, for one, really enjoyed this drama despite its flaws and draggy bits here and there.
