I absolutely agree. In my opinion, the makers did the best they could with the restrictions in place. However, I do think they could have given the Lin Yan from a thousand years ago a happier story with SSG disappearing when they were well into their old age in some tragic incident and therefore "dying" . Also, the Shen family ought to have "died" rather than have disappeared altogether from people's memories after living fulfilling lives in the past. The Shen family disappearance throws a lot of things into disarray, for instance, the whole story of Lin Yan seeking justice for the Cui clan, and his marriage being recorded in history. (Though one might argue that he ensured that his wife is remembered by recording his story himself for the future generations.) I guess the reason why the makers made LY of the past miserable because they didn't want to take any chances with the censors. Like you observed, it's pretty evident that the present LY is a reincarnation of the past LY. Thank goodness, WYL and LYR are really good actors because the last conversation between SSG and the present LY made it amply clear that they both remember their time together. LY certainly remembers via the "dream", who he actually is and that they were madly in love with one another which is why he recognised her from the back of her head and tears up once he sees her face. In my head, they got together and married soon after. 😅
