Great OST and that's where all the great things end about this drama. The writing was very problematic, I kept hoping it will pick itself up but it never did. The cast and their performance were okay and the production was good for the time. You'll get a good OST and a handful of sweet moments but the poor writing will overshadow anything and everything. Proceed with caution!
Decent drama. Its main strength is its comedy which is great when the jokes hit but that's not always the case. The type of comedy you'll see here is similar to sitcoms like "Unstoppable High Kick", quirky and situational. Yet, the comedy around the middle parts (around 5-9) was weak and the story was slow. There isn't much romance since that's not the focus anyway. The leads had a good dynamic as well as the 2nd leads between each other.
The drama is like 50% revenge and 50% amnesia and the latter was truly awful. It's also way too long for the actual content it presented and what made it even worse is the lack of anything interesting. The earlier episodes had some serious cheese, as if they were a fan fiction written by a teenage girl after watching 10 dramas. The chemistry of the leads can be a hit or miss, some scenes it worked while others didn't at all. It's hard to recommend this drama unless you are a fan of the leads.
The whole "birth secret" thing was done very distastefully and was out of place to what the drama built up in the earlier episodes. There were many questionable things that lacked coherent flow but these weren't the focus since the main selling point was its leads and their chemistry. Yet, the comedic momentum and the mid 2000's feel made it a decent watch. Great performance from the main leads, they bounce off each other very nicely and have a good chemistry.
Absolutely nothing special or new here, pure fluff but you would keep watching for the leads. Yeon Jung Hoon did a great job embodying his character and so did Uhm Ji Won . Speaking of the leads, why do they always kiss side ways? Too awkward.
Well, to sum it up.... it's bad! It's one of those cheep tv-novels with no care or budget. It you look at some corners on the set you'll see it falling apart. They even use digital zoom and cropping instead of optical zoom in 2020!! If you were to use ChatGPT to generate a kdrama script it would totally crush this drama. BTW, it's called "Mom Has an Affair" but no affair to be seen anywhere!
Well, I hated all the mothers in the drama. The writer did a really poor job with that theme. Subsequently, the…
Giving the mother a terminal illness and killing her felt redundant. It only served as a climax because without it the drama wouldn't have had a climax. It's also why all the mother-daughter relationships failed because they weren't given proper attention until the mother got sick in the last 15 episodes.
Well, I hated all the mothers in the drama. The writer did a really poor job with that theme. Subsequently, the mother-daughter relationships were neglected for too long and only were given attention around the last chunk of episodes. I wasn't a fan of the ending either, they created an event later on just so that the drama would have a climax instead of having a coherent story that leads to a natural climax (more in spoilers).
There's a big problem with all the pairings/characters. Both ML and FL had zero chemistry and straight up bad romance. They were the worst part of the drama. The FL cutting off her hair to display a change is nothing but laughable. Mi Sun and her man-child were one of the most boring stories out there. Woo Jin was too goddamn dry of a character, the writer must have hated him. Mi Hye needed to have some brain. We didn't get to see Mi Hye & Woo Jin cuter interactions until way too late in the drama. The villains were wack. Everyone gets off too easily.
With all that being said, the drama had some nice moments but they will keep you waiting for too long between each one. The drama is one of the draggy ones so if you were to get into it be prepared.
The drama was a pleasant watch, I'm surprised I liked it. Calm and peaceful with great comedic dynamics between characters. Sam Do & his wife were probably the biggest highlights for anyone watching it. I wish we had more of them instead of the excessive focus on Tae Yang and his stalker. Even Tae Pyung & Dong Sook were cut off too short in last third. It's a shame we didn't get to see more Rock n Roll from Tae Pyung. Maybe add another small side story about Dong Sook's daughter that we barely ever saw her. At least Lee Man Sool was a great old geezer, full of wisdom. If you are in the mood for something long, give the drama a shot.
I watched about 10 dramas of Lee Dong Gun and I hated him in every single one except this one, of which he was tolerable this time. Speaking of which, both the FL and him felt underwhelming as the main leads but passable. I was wondering where's grandma in the last few episodes just to discover she passed away! Rip Kim Young Ae :(
Goddamn! The little kid "Dae Reum" was the real star, she completely stole the spotlight. The usual typical hoops and loops with any melodrama/light-makjang out there. Things don't make sense, things change suddenly and artificially, things come and go that are out of place, and some plot devices were introduced and played a small role but never had a follow up. The cast size and the number of stories were limited for a drama that is 57 episodes, a little more variation was needed. The leads barely had much chemistry and they were moving too fast and unrealistically in relation to the preceding events. One thing I really disliked is how the drama teased that "one" secret for 50+ episodes with infinite close encounters just to fill up an episode. It would be alright if they were to tease it from half way through. Overall, it's okay.
The first half was more fun than the latter. Watching Mi Yeon trying to take revenge on Hyo Seop was the best part. In fact, they were the best couple in the series. On the other hand, almost all the other couples were weak and lacked chemistry, especially Sun Ha. Speaking of characters, I was expecting more from Yoo Ha against her in-laws, a bit disappointed.
The drama itself is fine, it had its ups and downs, it can be a bit slow sometimes, it had some interesting events, and it had a handful of likeable cast members. It's a casual family drama with little melodrama, most of the conflict was with the in-laws which didn't last that long anyway.
