I just got done with this absolute melodramatic mayhem of a makjang. I'm overwrought, exhausted and just plain furious. So OTT even a telenovela seems tame in comparison. Welp, on to the next season.
I am on episode 14 of this drama and I swear I have gained AT LEAST fifty grey hairs. The utter stupidity of this mother/daughter pair is beyond belief. I am tempted to drop it because i am tired of asking myself What the f***, why the *fuck EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. WHY ARE THEY SO DAFT in the face of all this overt hostility?!!! God grant me patience, for I am hanging by the tiniest, thinnest, flimsiest string. I mean, DAMN! Ok cue episode 15. The masochism is real. Lawd!!!
Thoroughly thrilling and enjoyable movie, exactly what I was looking for tonight. The score was great, costumes were fabulous, the acting, superb, and I was rapt the entire time. In fact I wish all three parts were already out. I was ready to binge it all in one go. Wish I had seen this in a movie theater.
Nobody, nobody, I mean NOBODY does slice of life like the Japanese. Cutest freaking show, had me grinning at the screen like a big idjit. I loved EVERYTHING from the acting, the effortless way the two leads conveyed their emotions, the cinematography, pacing, dialogue. Everything felt so authentic and organic, it didn't feel like I was watching actors, but two actual teens shyly navigating their first real amorous relationship. My only gripe is that I wanted ten more episodes of these two. Hoping to see more of the two of them soon. Such a great palate cleanser between all the dark shite I fry my brain cells with. Thanks JBL land!
Cute little show but personally I felt it was too short considering the heavy topics it brought to the table. I don't think they explored the issues in depth enough, everything was kinda glossed over. The actors did okay, but again, the intensity was lacking during certain dramatic scenes/reveals . It should have been a grittier, more emotionally laden production. And Japan KNOWS how to do this almost better than anyone so it was a bit of a shame. Still, NOT a waste of my time and definitely watchable and enjoyable enough.
Other than the fact that the gangsters weren't really "gangstering" (in a gritty, authentic manner) I truly enjoyed this. Simple, cute, emotional, sexy. The cameos, a feast for any Taiwanese BL addict. IYKYK. Many varieties of eye candy, each yummy their own way. Ai Di's short little ass stole my heart with his sass and snark combo. What a darling. Definite rewatch value for certain scenes , and no not just the NSFW ones.
I was so sad to hear this news. Through this terrible loss and tragedy, I won't get caught up in the how, whys and whos of his passing. Many here have expressed thoughts and opinions into why this happened. I just want to take a moment to remember the man, the actor, his roles and how many times he made me laugh, cry, wince, yell at my screen; all the ways his superb acting skills whisked me away to another world/reality, whether it was his dramas or movies. His loss hits my k-addict/cinephile heart hard. He will be missed. May he Rest in Peace. And may his family FIND peace in the midst of all this chaos.
I think most people expected a sort of continuation of Season 1, seeing the same surviving characters move on from the apartment complex into a new adventure. . Instead we got entirely new characters and a whole different vibe, where monsters almost took second place to a portrayal of basic human survival. If you're a flexible viewer, this season was enjoyable (plus with ALL that eye candy ;-) ) and not disappointing. If you expected the same as Season 1, then you were probably left wanting and found this a jumbled mess. I think it was a great bridge to Season 3 where I believe/hope all the seeming loose ends will come together in a cohesive manner.
It WAS hard to connect to/with so many different characters but in hindsight I think that was done on purpose. These people, especially the soldiers, did not have a long shelf life anyway and that was part of the point the story was telling. Anyone could die at any moment, just as the young boy said it was about being tough and leaving compassion and all sentiment behind. The characters/plot may seem undeveloped but that helped carry the theme of "you may not even make it till tomorrow". Everything was banal, and one day at a time.
Almost everyone (except Park Chan Young and a couple of soldiers) in this was unfeeling, detached, selfish, cold, disillusioned etc. which is honestly how I see most humans being after an apocalyptic event. Even in a commune, there will always be those who ultimately only care about themselves. There was little to no love lost among the members of the stadium community, they all got along begrudgingly because there was no other option. Thus unlike Season 1, there was less emotion and sentimentality. This was all about harsh, hard survival and maybe that made it difficult for viewers to care about people's fate, ironically/paradoxically(?) sort of immersing and including us in the show's theme despite people not feeling connected (?). I hope that makes sense . Anyway I enjoyed it even though it was wayyy different from my expectations.
Loved it. I watch tons of dark, neo-noir, crime etc movies and shows so the story was nothing new. Nothing bad about that AT ALL, because when done right the same story can be told over and over again while making it still exciting and fresh. What made this not be another run of the mill show was the absolute stellar acting by almost the entire cast, from the MLs to the pregnant junkie girl who had all of five minutes screen time. Perfect casting and job well done by them all.
I knew Bibi through music and now will keep my eyes open for her acting projects. She NAILED that role. Hard ass when she needed to be, seductive when she wanted "her man", and downright vulnerable at the very end. She was fantastic! JCW's wonderful performance heightened the tension and danger of his predicament solely with subtle gestures and perfect facial reactions. So effortlessly expressive. There was no overreacting needed to build suspense or for the audience to understand his desperation. I LOVED his and Bibi's onscreen time, and the inner conflict she aroused in him was perfectly displayed at one point (won't spoil it) when he had to make a painful judgement call.
Wi Ha Joon truly brought Ji Chul to life. He made me sympathetic to the character then would quickly remind me that maybe I shouldn't be. haha The quiet, loner gangster who feigns at sophistication in his well tailored clothes but will always be the kid from the streets; yearning to be "let in" to decent society and looked at with respect instead of scorn. This desire to be good enough is the driving force that helps him build his little empire but we all know how it ended for Icarus...
I cannot express how livid I was at the pure incompetence of Junmo's superiors. I mean...UGH. That's all the English i will waste on them. Oof!
The wife, mmmm...sometimes i raged at her even BEING in the show lol but I get why she was necessary. But, Bibi for sure was my favorite chick in this whole thing. Sexy badass!
There was a lot of grey area throughout the show, characters you shouldn't sympathize with had you kinda rooting for them, good guys did bad things for the greater good, people who should protect the citizens were instead the monsters terrorizing them. Every man looking out for himself and trying to save their own skin. Just like real life aye? On and on it goes. World keeps turning.
The acting, directing, suspense, pace, the cohesion of the plot, all made for a highly enjoyable ride. Time very well spent. Go hit play and enjoy!
not frank still being alive?? i had my hopes down after we returned to the present storyline but those last scenes…
That's why people need to be patient and watch a body burn to cinders. As soon as I saw Juwon leave right away, I knew it left the door open for Frank's survival. I would have stood there till he was ash, then spread those in like 50 different places lol Countless shows and movies they leave after one bullet shot etc , assuming the deal is done. It's called the double tap for a reason. Do the job right. MAKE SURE THEY ARE DEADDDDDD!!! haha
20 episodes and I literally have one minute itty bitty gripe which is about the bus, the episode with Frank y'know and how there wasn't a huge to do about the events of that night. Other than that this was near perfection. I now have to go nurse my withdrawal with re-watching my favorite parts. Kudos to EVERY SINGLE PERSON involved in the making of this show. Intrigue, no holds barred action, romance, comedy, incredible family dynamics, the writing, production, acting... I also really appreciated the fact that the "nemeses/villains" were not one dimensional evil and that time was spent giving a bit of their backstory.. Most people are not just one thing. So many layers and subtleties in this show. LOVED LOVED LOVED IT!!!!! Season 2 PPAL-LI-HAE YO JEBAL!!
I’ve been rewatching this drama again, on ep 4 now. I just realized something that I might’ve missed. Anyone…
Second string is a term used in sports, football (American) especially for the players who are not the best/top notch. They are usually the ones used as subs or replacements if there is an injury etc. Basically they are not the "starters"..
I've been in a MAJOR slump all summer, hours spent trying to find the right movie for the mood and then running out of time so nothing got watched, books started and left unfinished, BL shows one episode in and dropped. Everything was just so BLAH! Then I decided to come back to kdrama land which I had abandoned a while for BL world. Boy let me tell you, first it was Life on Mars followed by Gaus Electronics then this as the third selection. Grand Slam!! I won the Triple Crown YAY!!! LOL I feel like my soul was revived and I am resuscitated. THANK YOU KDRAMA for the lifeboat!!
I can't even describe how much I loved this show. The chemistry between the leads, from hateful to cautious and then BAM just straight up Joseon style sexy times haha. I loved the relationship between the Queen and her ladies, the queen and her Cheol Jong, the politics was great without being draggy and over the cliff like it can get sometimes (I don't have to explain to any drama addict how INSANE shit can get in old time Asia haha). I'm not even going to wax on, I will be here forever. Just, if you are in a bad place and need a laugh, a giggle, some excellent acting, no filler, fast paced oh and did I mention HILARIOUS scenes, please do yourself a favor and watch this show. Absolute GOLD.
OOOOOne little complaint. Like others I would have preferred a better conclusion so like most of you, in MY head we know how it REALLY ended. ;-) I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!
The story of this serie remind me of a chinese novel from Lu Tianyi. It's called "Don't you like me". Anyone know…
I saw something on a BL reddit sub that this is supposed to be an adaptation of that novel. One of my favorite danmeis, its soo cute. Haven't really been active in BL world recently so cannot confirm this for a fact....
Dear Maggi, it would seem that our intriguing, complex, angry human has indeed had his account taken down. Looking…
It is a bit tragic that i know EXACTLY of whom you refer to. Had a "conversation" with them recently 'cause he left a nasty personal reply to a comment I made. I politely highlighted that whenever I "drop in" to MDL I see them here ALL the time making mean and disparaging comments. Then he proceeded to cyber screech like a banshee at me to block him. I patiently replied that that would be an immature petulant response and that my life isn't spent on MDL so I couldn't be tTHAT bothered with him really. I also said something along the lines of how he must make friends everywhere he goes. Hadn't seen them around harassing people so I assumed they had blocked me. haha! Peace reigneth in the halls of MDL. Yay.
Just got done with bingeing this show (personally I feel it is the best way to go with the "shorties"). I don't normally say this about BL dramas' running time but, it's a fantastic thing that this was so short. Otherwise I would have lockjaw and a permanent Joker's grin with how much it made me smile. So so cute. So refreshing. Angst, second chance, romance, work camaraderie, humor, transparency, effortless segue to cohabitation, a perfectly sized bump in the road to create just the right amount of conflict/hurt (Eddy why'd you go and make me cry?) without derailing the overall sweet/easy breezy tone, all wrapped up in a pretty little gift. Close to perfection and time well spent. Immediately went to my re-watch pile. Hands down one of the best KBLs.
I prefer the simplicity of your analysis to some of the overwrought criticism I've been reading...
haha Thank you. Yeah, I just can't summon the surplus energy these days to wax on about how much I love or hate a show. More power to those who do. ;-) If I enjoyed it, good for ME, if I didn't, bad for ME. I'll leave the detailed praises or outraged histrionics to the young and capable. lol
Snorting in laughter at the utter absurdity that is you... insulting AND confrontational. tsk tsk Holy shite, you've got issues. My sympathies, poor thing. Bet you make friends EVERYWHERE you go huh? ;-)
No need to block you; such a childish, petulant suggestion LOL Your vileness is laughably pathetic not annoying and my life is not lived on MDL.
Well, THAT is about allll the time and energy I am expending on you and your unquenchable thirst to shit on another person's day. Toodles.
Hmmmm Let me see if I can practice MY flounce out of this doozy of a dog poop mire that is interacting with you... whoo lawd! lol
I enjoyed it well enough. I appreciated the fact that it was outside of a school setting. Some parts were great and others, hmmm... Quenched the thirst but felt like I could go for another half a bottle haha Fourth and Gemini are phenomenal together. I just got done with MSP so this was a perfect follow up. That's all I've got today.
