The movie is based on a book like most of his other movies. It was realistic with dystopian setting about social evils revolves around postwar Japan , the theme was serious but i felt the direction was rushed, comical,messy n length was short that i cudnt connect with characters. It was unlike other movies of his which i like.
I like imamura's portrayal of strong woman no matter how flawed her character is, i have observed this in his several movies that the women don't cry easily n give up even after so much suffering, i mean they are not so melodramatic but mature n open minded.

This slow paced movie is about three flawed characters that's a prostitute who can't bring herself to break up with her controlling bf,her abusive bf n a lonesome intelligent oldman who is lonely n pure enough to get himself into troubles but i liked his character the most. There's also an interesting side character,the woman in the window,who is also not perfect, crying about not being able to get married like marriage is some huge achievement. The plot is simple,focused more on story, characters n how they all are intertwined rather than conclusion.Overall a decent movie .
Everyone is calling it art, still cnt decide if i should pick it again. I have a feeling I'll get disappointed. Not everything slow n boring is art i have seen plenty of dull n even trashy movies that no one likes n enjoyed it but this just dint keep me engaged enough to finish. I picked this for director n tadanobu but this was so bad,i kept watching bcz i liked the ambience but i lost interest n cudnt pay much attention till the end.
My question is :for how long? How long the weaker n minorities will be suppressed? M ashamed to say that same problem is with India.Today i saw the news that Italy is banning English language,bcz their population is decreasing they dnt want to accept LGBTQ,last week it was Uganda criminalizing it.They blame America for LGBT but How is freedom a western idea? Once u make the law, people will have to accept it , they all follow conservative policies for vote bank.Similary, countries like USA where it's legalized few people still face bully.Why is that?Where is humanity? M even more disappointed when girls do bullying n stuff ,aren't we supposed to be compassionate,open minded n sensitive?
I support the theme so my rating will be high for the theme.Aprt from that i liked the actors,dint get me emotional bcz short films are nt really my things but i liked it,much better than fluffy BLs .
After watching so many movies based on serial killings n much better movies from imamura sensei this felt pale in comparison.At times i got bored , would have liked it more if i watched it earlier.Only thing i liked was Ken Ogata n Rentaro's acting.
Women have been fighting for centuries for their rights n the fight is still going on, now LGBTQ community is fighting no idea for many years they will continue.It's just sad n unfair. Social commentary kind of plot, emotional,the theme was strong, ending was realistic n justified but many incidents broke my heart n acting was good . I hope they make more movies on theme like this, it really helps to create awareness.
This was a little heavy, there's no romance n love at all, just realistic approach to a ruined relationship .No ,actually the couple dint have anything good for it to be ruined. It's been a while i have seen japan make this kind of toxic movie.

The director is young I'll cut him some slack n he did a good job in pacing n dull ambience which was required for this movie but man the transition between the scenes was so bad that even if u pay enough attention u get confused, first few minutes were hard to pass bcz i got bored listening to girls spewing nonsense but then we get the real story . Overall it's a good movie with a good message. Please choose ur friends n bf wisely n make sure to use condom. Watch Blue Valentine if you want a responsible guy n romance.

I think in the end sumika confessed /kissed kiyomi bcz all of a sudden kiyomi started submitting to her again n drew her beautifully bcz she found sumika attracted for the first time in life, before that she always drew her as an evil character n sumika is a seducer she can seduce anyone for her benefit whether it's stepbrother or biological sister. I cud be wrong so feel free to share opinion.
