did the director think we are dumb? they DEFINITELY did not kiss in that 'kissing' scene. next episode doesn't…
I think that;s also my issue... not even that they did not show them kiss, but it was CLEAR the actors did not kiss... Like, as a viewers we know the characters did not kiss πŸ™ƒ

Review The Double Spoiler
Would definitely not call it parody. It took itself too seriously for the parody. I think they just went stylistically…
The main trope of this genre is the girl fighting against being used as a pawn by her family or husband. < this is not a trope that is typical of slice of life genre... Mist slice of life shows do not have female characters being used by their families...

girl's reputation is also not a trope specific for slice of life dramas. Maybe you just confusing slice of life with costume dramas. Because using others as pawns, torture, poisoning etc are typical for costume dramas.

What does a parody do, it imitates a genre, work, author, etc. for comedic effect. < I think this is where we disagree, because I do not think these were done for comedic effect. Like... almost no one was laughing about these scenes. So it this was a parody, they did PAINFULLY bad job with it, because it did not land with audience at all.

For me The Double fits a good old telenovela, makjang, soap opera or whatever other name for the overly dramatic, larger-than-life plots one uses to describe the genre.
On I Hear the Sunspot Jul 25, 2024
Personally I do not have issue with them not showing the kiss, but how they did it. I rather they just remove all the "kiss" related scene after the hands/arms shot. It was enough to indicate they kissed, had this subtle nature to it without making the scene look awkward.

And while i understand they did it 1:1 how it was in manga, does not mean it cannot be criticized. What works for a picture, does not have to work in motion, and for me it just didn't. Staying true to the source material is one thing, but not adjusting the source material for completely different media is another.

That said, I still am completely in love with the show and want to rewatch all the eps we had so far (and I most likely will rewatch them on weekend 😭)

Kate, you have watched Love Like the Galaxy, would you say The Double is a parody on Love Like the Galaxy and…
Would definitely not call it parody. It took itself too seriously for the parody. I think they just went stylistically with how the shot the show exactly how the cheaper productions are shot - a lot of overexaggeration.

Definitely agree with you on this one. I don't mind no kissing scenes in BL, but if they're gonna portray it,…
sometimes it's better not to show something at all, than make it look just laughably bad and obviously fake πŸ₯²

Title I Hear the Sunspot Spoiler
Let's start with this no kiss kiss scene, so then we can focus on the positives 🀑 At this point these scenes just piss me off. It would be better to just end the "kiss" part of the scene on the shot of the arms and then move on to the dialogue, rather than this whole circus of funny angles to make it seem like a kiss when it's not πŸ™‚

To the good things - I am still completely in love with the show! I adore all the focus on the communication, voicing your thoughts, feelings and opinions. As Taichi said, he might not be able to understand Kohei full if he talks more, but if he won't talk, he won't understand him at all.

As much as ADORE Taichi and think he is the person we all needs, but most of us does not deserve in their live 🀑 I actually love seeing Kohei's journey a lot - him slowly opening up, him smiling more and more, him taking initiative in communicating with others, forming friendships. It's just so amazing to see the walls he had built slowly come down 😭

Title Serendipity's Embrace Spoiler
All the filters and shaky camera as a drunk viewpoint is so spot on tbh 🀣 At the same time, Kim So Hyun acting drunk? That not great 🀣 That said, 90% of actors are not really that good at acting drunk. Like, she has all the movements spot on, but the speech is way off. Then there are some actors who do great drunk speech, but not the movement...

I really hope the uncle is not shady, coz I like him a lot and his interactions with Hu Yeong are adorable. But from the first two episode it does not seem to have any business politics so I guess he is in fact just going to be fun and adorable uncle! πŸ’•

I do not approve of this new ship of Kim Hye Ji and Gyeong Taek, because I wanted her with Sang Pil 😭
Also it's CRIMINAL how little Sang Pil we've got in episode 2 😭

The date, not-date just makes me want to see Kim So Hyun is historical drama a lot. But more serious one rather than a comedy. Like Bloody Heart type.

Yo... she kind of has good chemistry with the ex 🀑 He is such a trash tho. Left with no word 3 years ago and now showing up like it's not a big issue 🀣🀣🀣 "We never broke up" BITCH HAHAHA Yeah you just yeeted yourself out of her life for 3 years, he is delulu.

I think Kim Hye Ji is going to move on from Hu Yeong ane support whatever initially fake later real relationship between him and Hong Ju. She does not seem like a person who would create any drama in that area. Obviously great friend that is protective over Hong Ju.

OP clearly was talking about users of MDL criticizing the drama, to which you said was because "Lovely Runner has spoiled folks" based on what you saw on completely different website Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― your personal experience somewhere else does not apply here unless you also experienced it here πŸ‘πŸ»

You replied to specific user, who was talking about people in this specific comment section, not a general trends in viewers. So yes, if you want to reply and not look like you are talking out of your ass, you need to match your examples to what is talked about.

I simply do not like seeing people like you invalidate others opinions because you have some conspiracy theory going on in your brain. Some people simply think this drama is mediocre and it has nothing to do with them comparing it to other popular dramas.

Well, is this twitter? Are users commenting here the same users commenting on twitter? Are you FBI to know everyone accounts on all social media? Did you go around people criticizing this drama and checking what they rater and wrote about LR? Projecting reactions from one social media to reactions on another social media without any valid reasons is basing your claim on nothing, but your projections πŸ‘πŸ»

As you said, dramas can have simple plots and still be great. The issue is, that if the drama is simple in terms of plot, it should be interesting in other areas - stellar acting, beautiful cinematography, relatable characters with depth. There are many simple dramas that were still interesting and engaging. While Serendipity's Embrace just seems bland in comparison. I think that's actually more proper word to describe the first ep, rather than mediocre, it was painfully bland.

Talking only about episode 1, since only one episode is out.

Starting from barely existing chemistry. And no, no one expect the screen to be on fire from their first meeting, chemistry is not just about romance. Sadly the more dramas I watch with Kim So Hyun, the more I see how much she straggles with having chemistry with her co-stars is terms of romantic plot. Her scenes with Da Som are great, while her scenes with Chae Jong Hyeop are not - which is troublesome since this is at the end of the day rom-com.

The introductions of the characters was all over the place. It's not a 16 episodes drama, it's half of that run-time, but we know actually barely anything about the leads. Lee Hong Ju at least has more depth with her failed first love and the background story concerning Bang Jun Ho, while Kang Hu Yeong got nothing.

The cinematography was decent, but the highlights were in their high school shots, which are supposed to be just flashbacks as a set up for the story.

There is nothing new, innovative or exciting about the plot they introduced. It's scenes we have seen in other dramas, not revamped, not repacked with new details. Which makes it ordinary, average and so-so: synonymous - mediocre.

I love how no one has the same attitude towards people loving dramas right away. Somehow these people do not need to wait before they form their "strong opinion" since it's been just one episode πŸ™‚

All that said, this is my subjective opinion. As valid as any other opinion - be it positive or negative. Everything is subjective. and to answer you initial question: Did I miss something? - apparently the fact people can have different takes on the same drama and it should not be big enough of a deal to make a call out comment about it πŸ‘πŸ»

That's just assumption from 1cheekiebaby based on nothing tbh. I'm not comparing it to Lovely Runner , and even if i did, i was not amazed by it either (gave it 7.5).

Best way to know why people are calling it mediocre is not listening to random people, but actually asking said people who are calling it mediocre πŸ‘πŸ»

First episode was extremely mediocre, but somehow that's what I liked about it?
I'm so tired of over the top plots with 837560934604 sub plots going on. A chill typical first love/unrequited love type of a deal with just 8 episodes sounds perfect lol
