If you’ve read quite a few historical bls, you’d agree that this drama recycles some of your usual cliches, such as the rebirth trope, friends to enemies to lovers, revenge, etc. While the predictability is quite high, the difference is that it’s one of the few times we’re actually seeing this kind of script manifest in the form of an actual drama (the earlier ones being Kill to Love).
The acting is rocky in some areas, sure. I have my ‘eh’s about the Fifth Prince’s acting in that he appears too wooden-faced sometimes, but the script and production are really up to par that I’m willing to overlook that— and I would encourage you all to do so as well.
Seriously, the slow burn, tension, and production quality are great. Pei Yanzhi’s actor can act with his eyes, Yin Qi had the most genuine on-screen smile, and Yin Zhou is already on a league of his own. There are cons, but if you look closer, there are also many pros.
Ultimately, it’s your choice if you want to watch it or not but I think that everyone should give the first 2 episodes a try before leaving a comment. C-gays are already struggling as is in terms of release. If we base the acting, production quality, and everything else with ordinary c-drama standards, it’ll obviously fall short. With all the ancient bl’s that have been shelved (TGCF, SPL, 2HA), I am just being grateful for what we have LOL
The pacing is excellent. I’m loving how naturally the romance is flowing. Not to mention, the balance between plot and relationship/character development is great too. This is mutual pining at its finest, and I’m all for yearners— especially ancient c-gays!
Xie Yanlai looks sososo good. Zhou Yiran really captures that ‘vibe’ of a heroic warrior I envision wuxia characters to be like. It’s like he sprung out of a comic or something. Meanwhile, CDL is a timeless beauty. I like to compare her to the Chinese saying of a “beauty who can make the fish sink and wild geese fall” (沉鱼落雁 ). The styling team really did them justice. For CDL, this role is huge for her and is definitely what she deserves with the amount of times her screen time gets cut short!
This is sickeningly good. I love the psychological depth it has and above all, the dialogue is what stands out to me the most. Whoever wrote those lines deserves an award or something. Thought-provoking and masterful. Why didn’t I discover this sooner?
I’m holding off episode 9 until my final board exam tomorrow. It’s a test of endurance, that’s for sure. Especially when you’re on Twitter. Like someone’s waving a carrot in front of a donkey or something 😭
That cover photo has me in cardiac arrest. The chemistry.. it’s too good, damn it! I hope we get a steamy scene because both of them have that kind of ‘sensual’ appeal 🤭
Episode 6 is an absolute masterpiece. The cinematography, the cool tones, the music placement, the micro expressions, the suppressed gay.. oh.. the SLOWBURN IS PAYING OFF. I can’t wait to see our constipated gay (Xia Liuyi: What did you just call me?) open up his heart for our Elite He.
It’s reminiscent of episode 3, albeit a bit faster paced. I hope the romance builds some momentum from this point onwards. Episode 6 was a toe-curler!
I watched the first episode. Cinematography is flawless as always. CDL and JJY are very beautiful. However, I didn’t expect to get a whole expedition dump in the 1st 10 minutes of the show. I already forgot half of the characters names lol. It kind of threw me off. The bass-boosted flute that spawns out of nowhere is also a bit funny. I don’t know why this suddenly became a stylistic choice of GJM, as it was more toned down in MJTY and FOF.
The pacing is also very fast, which makes me worried that GJM will try to cram everything in 29 episodes, but I guess we’ll have to see how everything plays out!

Why are my eyes leaking bro
