Can you spoil me about that kiss scenes and do you know who propose first
Well.. it’s a gangster x student dynamic, so there’s bound to be some ‘toxicity’. It’s not the scum level of toxicity, though. XLY is a ‘gray’ character through and through, and some of the things he does it definitely questionable. XLY in the drama is a lot more toned down than the XLY in the novel BUT he never goes overboard with anything (ex: 🍇 ). If anything, XLY is ‘toxic’ in the sense that he’s a gangster by blood and the way he does things is brute by nature. I would say that the overarching ‘toxicity’ of their relationship is just their lack of communication sometimes but as I mentioned, they resolve conflicts quickly, both are smart, and the things they do are to protect the other person.
XLY undergoes a steady character development arc that’s comparable to Mo Ran from 2HA (if you read that). He goes from an arrogant, insufferable bastard to a man who’s willing to climb a window and get himself washed just so that he doesn’t seem ‘dirty’ for hugs and kisses by his man (totally not a spoiler cough cough)!

All of those things, but they settle disputes quickly. Liuyi doesn’t accept CS at first and even tries to gaslight his sexual orientation. We’ll see a bit of that in the next episode (you’ll see what I mean), but he eventually falls for HCS. His heart opens up little by little, and he’s undoubtedly the one who falls the hardest in the end!

Oh, gladly! He Chusan got injured and couldn’t take care of himself, so Xỉa Liuyi became his caretaker for a bit. In that particular scene, XLY carried HCS into the tub and helped bathe him. Long story short: HCS was clingy and wanted kisses, but XLY said “I haven’t brushed my teeth yet, you brat.” HCS (that bastard), proceeded to pout and say: “But I want to kiss you.” XLY folds, storms to the sink, whips out a toothbrush and scrubs the shit out of his teeth (and his face), then tosses HCS a toothbrush. Once both are clean, they make out near the bathtub, with HCS saying something along the lines of: “You smell so good.”
He Chusan and Xia Liuyi’s love story is arguably one of the purest and most heart-wrenching that I’ve ever seen in novels. I hope they showcase all of that in the drama because I need to see those scenes ACTED OUT. There’s a specific kissing scene that happens quite early on in the novel (🪥🫧) and it’s so ICONIC that I gobbled it up in the novel and listened to it in the audio drama. Now, I just need to see it acted out!!
I have to say, the casting crew struck gold landing HCX and HYZ. An unexpected duo, but they swept me off my feet. HCX portrays the innocent, responsible He Chu San and HYZ the fearsome, yet tender Xia Liu Yi. I got impatient waiting for the episodes to release each week so I started reading the novel and it’s.. ughhh.. its so damn good. Perfect balance of character, plot, and romance. The relationship between the leads unfolds naturally throughout the story. It’s a slow burn, but once you get to the honeymoon phase, it’s tooth-decayingly sweet. Xia Liuyi is a complex character who undergoes many changes in the original and as a reader, you’re able to see his progression very well. He Chu San also goes from the meek and timid scholar to the only man who can top Liuyi. That being said, since the original novel itself was a slow burn, I’m loving how they stayed true to that in the drama too.
I do have to say, though, that the plot of the original is deeply layered and too complex to be condensed in a 9-episode show. I’m anticipating a couple of seasons for this one and, based on the livestream, a second one is in the talks. There are so many iconic scenes from the novel that I really want to see in the adaptation.. so fingers crossed!
I hope that HYZ/HCX gain recognition for this series and that fans will continue to support them responsibly so that they can continue feeding us content. I don’t know about overseas fans, but I hope that the mainland audience will respect their space (because we’ve seen what happens to popular BLs)!
Oh my.. I was NOT expecting that 1st episode to be that good. He Yan Chao’s eyes are so expressive, the pacing is great, and the change in dynamic (who’s 1/0) is a pleasant surprise! The chemistry is to die for.. IM OBSESSEDDD

HCS proposes first!
As someone who doesn’t know what they’re getting themselves into: Is this really worth its score? =))
