I somehow get a feeling that ML was bitter of how Pei Zhan doesnt dare go against his father. And i felt that stemmed from being betrayed by Pei Zhan. As he explained in his apology, he was competitive with ML even as kids. I don't entirely blame him for that because i think his father nurtured them that way. Also in their childhood flashback around the end, ML approached Pei Zhan too.
