He did go back when learned of the massacre and he made sure she lived. Going back to linan was not in the plans. So he had to leave again. He had eradicated that bandit hideout and had followed the severely wounded SYQ in the river but didnt see him. So, it's possible he's dead. He knows LHA's army was there, she's safe for now. And as far as she knows he's not a high ranking person, he cannot just leave bodyguards. That would also draw attention. Then he got his divorce papers Only then, did he receive the challenge that his 'daughter' is a hostage. In a way he's trying to follow what she wanted, a break. He's also fighting a war and he has enemies.
Her appearing in the camp was a total surprise for him. He didnt expect for her to leave her village, i think. So this gives him hope and unlike his usual smart self, he procrastinated about his identity. I guess he wants to spend more time with her.
