1. Because he went to help her when she was suffering in the palace in the past. Logically it wasn't supposed to be his business. When she found out that their engagement was broken off she felt like they were broken up by circumstances, so they might still have feelings towards each other.
2. Their marriage had broken down at this point that all was left was harsh words to each other and power. They had promised to be political allies and nothing more after the zhenzhen situation and barely saw each other for 20 years. They were also struggling to put their own person on the throne.
3. yes they do. ML doesn't really care about zhenzhen anymore but FL thinks he still does. For FL she lived with SML for the rest of her strained marriage so he was her second husband almost. but she felt that the two were different. ML would cross her boundaries and tease her or laugh with her, but SML was utterly kind to the point she felt there was distance.

Also I love that they kept the dialogue between Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan about his feelings towards Qin Zhenzhen in the past. These two were so honest in their new life I love it. For Pei Wenxuan, the relationship suffered ultimately because of his feeling of inferiority, but also, a last resistance to royal power. As he said in the past everything except his loyalty to his friends, the people and his parents, belonged to her. Not completely surrendering to her would be to resist surrendering to royal power, to keep the last vestige of who he was, a loyal official of humble birth to himself. Because of the scene today, we'll hopefully get to see what his problem with Su daren really is, apart from his jealousy. I don't want to take anyone's joy of discovery with spoilers so I'll stop here, but that is why I find the writing on personal relationships vs power so well explored in this piece of work.

But I think today's episode (ep 8) answered this question well whether he loved her or not, same as the novel. he had some feeling of regret towards her, but also thought he liked her in the past, just that they couldn't be together due to family circumstance. Li Long analysed him well. He liked her, but also liked Li Rong. He couldn't reconcile the fact that he now had space for Li Rong in his heart, he thought he wasn't being a gentleman by doing so. And he helped Qin Zhenzhen out of that gentleman's bond but also out of that guilt and childhood connection.

I was talking about the Crown Prince, not to be confused with the regular term for CP haha. The ep 7 and 8 preview suggest they like each other off the bat when I seem to remember she wanted nothing to do with him at first. if they kept Xun Chuan that's great
as a novel reader I'm satisfied! they've kept most of the dialogue and sequence of the story and added a bit here and there (e.g I don't remember Qixi Festival scene in the novel). The continuity is also good. If a character is dirty on the face they don't magically clean him up in the next scene. I wish Su Rongqing was more handsome though. I mean, he's the most eligible bachelor in the capital! But the writer's intention was that Pei Wenxuan had a lot going for him, but he was GOOD looking. I also had hopes for Pei Wenxuan's styling. The description of his clothes in the novel made him sound like an elegant young scholar, even though he's the cinderella of his family. I LOVED the outfit he wore in episode one, when he becomes the minister. Not sure how I feel about Zhenzhen. She wasn't interested in the CP at first in the book but now they're making them love at first sight. I also think Feng Ming's character has replaced what Zhenzhen was supposed to be.

yes and no. there are misunderstandings in the past which were kind of carried on in the new timeline, but they (especially the ML) resolve not to repeat them so their relationship can have another chance. just think of it as a couple who hated each other trying to be friends (and lovers) again.
In a show with well written characters the weakest is Jiang Li's father. He's just stupid for absolutely no reason, in his family life and in politics. sigh. I liked the writing better when it turned to Ji Shuran's relationship with her father and not the entry of a random lover from the past. They spent too long on the Imperial Diviner's death. my theory is people don't think about romance when they think of the duke. he's not the type to be engaging in the affairs that normal young men do and he has a reputation as a very dangerous person. so no one dares to speculate on his relationship with JL because of his fearsome reputation. you saw how the elder Li brother shut down any conversation on the Duke. it's just better not to talk about him. he's basically Voldemort. and also JL is not well respected yet in society and everyone expects her to match down, not match up (with the duke). they keep talking about zhenny hall whenever she comes up in conversation.
