I think his accent may be whatever accent of the dialect he picked up from home, what his parents speak. His parents may have been originally from a province further in China and later moved to Shenzhen. Xu Kai may have a mix of his parent's village accent in Mandarin and the Cantonese he picked up growing up in Shenzhen and Hong Kong area.

some of the scenes are quite eerie to me, like the little girl sitting on the swing who was supposed to be dead, it's spooky to me. It's that kind of scene you get in a nightmare. Oh I know, it reminds me the Great Escape, they have props like that

I just want a great story

It seems like they chose this visual style to fit the eerie and intense supernatural atmosphere. People are so used to seeing perfect, smooth skin in dramas that this natural look feels unusual—but it also makes the characters feel more real, more vulnerable.

Actually, come to think of it, they did this in Lost in the Kunlun Mountains too, although I only watched clips. I don't think Xu Kai had makeup in that drama either and I think they did it for the same reason to fit that mood.

It seems the story has changed to Mei Zhuyu seeking revenge (hating demons), investigating his parent's death. In the novel, he worked in the imperial ministry of justice (dealing with humans); in the drama, he works in the bureau of mystic investigations, I assume that is non-humans? So, now I beginning to see why they labeled it as wuxia leaning, although it's not classic wuxia. So, that means, he will have to confront Wu Zhen who is half demon (but it's not her fault, she didn't choose to be demon and she's keeping demon city in order.. there must be more to the conflict). In the novel, he didn't have any conflicts.

I just started ep. 2.. It's very high quality. Both Tian Xi Wei and Xu Kai truly embody their characters—Wu Zhen and Mei Zhuyu feel like they’ve stepped right out of the novel. Tian Xi Wei captures Wu Zhen with exquisite precision, and Xu Kai brings Mei Zhuyu to life with quiet intensity.

MDL has no rationale

At the end of Episode 1, when the light hits Mei Zhuyu’s eyes, you can see that beautiful amber glow. At first, I felt like something got cut in ep. 1, but they're moving the story along rapidly. Instead of drawn-out scenes, he uses impactful scenes to reveal things.
