I totally get what you mean now. So now when I seen people refer to his Cantonese and Mandarin, I understand now. Hey, thank you very much!

I'm not fluent because I left HK at 5 yrs old. My parents were not strict about speaking Chinese at home even though they don't speak English. Even though they were from villages, I supposed they were in HK long enough they picked up a lot of Hong Kong dialect. Someone I know says that people in Guangzhou dialect is very similar to Hong Kong dialect, so he thinks they are similar because people from Guangzhou probably migrated to Hong Kong. It's a requirement for actors to be able to get rid of their accents like in USA, actors from the Midwest, they cannot use Midwest accent in movies. I saw a comment in Douban that it's harder to change Cantonese accent to Official Mandarin accent than it is for someone with Mandarin accent. So Xu Kai is going to have to work hard to get rid of his accent otherwise, he cannot use his voice in costume dramas. He has accent to both Hong Kongers and to Mainland China. It's no wonder, I saw comments about both his Cantonese and Mandarin. Also, Xu Kai's parents are not originally from Guangdong area, so they also have an accent from the area of China they came from. This would explain why Xu Kai's accent is a mixture of accents.

I see what you mean. There is a difference between those in Hong Kong and those outside of Hong Kong city. I am not fluent, but I can speak some Cantonese, but my parents were from villages outside of Hong Kong. Xu Kai's Cantonese sounds just like the way I heard it growing up.
