Lu Zhao Yao gave him the name Mo Qing and only she calls him Mo Qing. His birthname is Li Chenlan. I watched The Legend over 3 years ago just once and recently rewatched it because the first time I was impatient waiting for the Li Chenlan scenes I might have skipped over some scenes. Xu Kai's portrayal of MO Qing and LI Chenlan is really good. What other actors consistently plays multiple personalities in the same drama? This was Xu Kai's first male lead drama too. He did so well. His character has profound impact on the drama even with limited scenes.

The Legends had comedy but Xu Kai's characters, Mo Qing and Li Chenlan were always serious, esp Li Chenlan was a mature character, even when the FL was comedic, and when you have that combination, it felt like deadpan comedy to me, how she acted funny, he was serious, esp. the scene when he discovers she's been divorced.

OUATILM has Wang Lu. You can't not know Wang Lu, although I've not watched it in its entirety since it's only on iQIYi but I have watched enough to know what the character is like and how the story goes, I consider it a creative and quality product, good acting, very funny too. Some say Wang Lu is the character with the highest IQ of all his dramas. It is Xu Kai's highest Douban (7.0) drama that he is lead. Even AvenueX who don't' like Xu Kai at all (dislikes him the most of all the actors out there), who thinks he can't act, thought that he showed versatility playing that character.

As far as DOSE, it's a fun drama, and there are some scenes i thought his acting was really good. I actually like his moments with the second female lead and his master. I like his confrontation with his master toward the end of the drama. But it's not a drama I will rewatch. There's not enough time.

Also, I have a soft spot for Sword and Fairy. I plan to rewatch it sometime in the future.

Recently, I rewatched TL after 3 years and found that Xu Kai's acting was actually really good, but I don't' think I will ever rewatch it again. I guess I didn't quite catch it all the first time I watched it. I think he doesn't show up enough so I may have gotten impatient the first time, like that scene when Lu Zhao Yao shows back up storms in like some triumphant ghost and the look on Li CHen Lan's face. I had to rewatch it his reaction a few times, I missed it the first time how good his expression was in that scene.

The two dramas I can rewatch not from the start but just clicking on any scene at any time and enjoying any moment in the drama, not just Xu Kai scenes, because I already know it so well are ALP and RF. These two dramas are available on You Tube, I don't need to fast forward to Xu Kai's scenes, I genuinely love the entire cast, every scene, every character.

SOYP is just too long to rewatch. I seen it once and it was long. I only will rewatch Xu Kai's scenes. I recently rewatched ABAY and to my surprise for 39 episodes, it went by so fast for me, I did skip some scenes of other couples really has nothing to do with the story. It's actually very easy to watch. I like the story very much. I like Han Ting. Well, actually, I watched it over 3 weeks but still each time, it flew by. I really understand the details even better now. I need to watch it one more time in the future.

Yu Zheng has the same color palette in his other historical dramas, looks like SOYP too. I though the colors were pretty, esp. Zhu Zhanji's costumes.

Actually, Zijin would never have agreed to marry Zhanji had the empress never suggested it and the emperor granted it. Zhanji had made up his mind to stop pursuing her and let her to go free and his mother the empress had promised him to let her go. Zijin just wanted to be a cook, it's like her haven. But after the decree, she had to marry him, and anyway, she really did love him, just not more than her freedom. She only agreed to enter the palace to see what kind of person the imperial grandson is who caused her so much pain in her life, it's why her mother took her own life, only to fall in love with him, but she never gave in to him. I don't think she had a choice either, the empress would have forced her to marry her son. She needed a strong woman by his side even if that woman rejects him. She was hoping she would change her mind once she met him. Zijin really was the perfect soulmate for Zhanji. She was raised to become his first wife and so she shared all his interests and did them so well, and Zhanji had a love for literature, arts, painting, and so many other talents that she shared. His empress shared nothing in common with him, the one who wanted to practice medicine. Like Zhanji said, he felt they were an odd couple. She was not the right fit for him, but her family lied that she was born lucky omen, and since Zijin was ill, she got replaced by the emperor, but Zhanji's mother never gave up on Zijin, she had personally selected and trained her since she was a child.

I was thinking that exact same thing. The director of FIYS pursued Xu Kai for the role (sent him scripts personally), so he may have had some leverage and of course Yu Zheng will want it too, it's income for him.

it was He Feng Tian's finest role as Yuan Qi. that scene of him trying to poison Zhu Zhanj. He doesn't' seem to have any more roles after Eight Hundred. He's been in eight of Xu Kai's dramas. I know they are good friends too.

I like RF for Zhu Zhanji. I like the romance dynamics too. Actually, there were two scenes Zhu Zhanji had with his empress, Hu Shan Xiang that I though Xu Kai's acting is so good at least I felt for Zhu Zhanji. For some reason, the way he tried to get through to his depressed empress telling her about why he named her and how his grandmother courageously helped his grandfather during his battle. And that scene where his empress was having a fit, and he went to her, and they had tense exchange. After she blamed him for never really caring for her, he said, I've given you so much but is this how you repay me. In the end, we see that the empress really did love him, she just had too much baggage going into the marriage, and they were teenagers when they married so they never developed true bonds. I felt sorry for her at the beginning, he tried to coax her, later he rejects her coldly. And Zhu Zhanji had this temperament and then the Zijin had her issues, so it made it impossible for them. It's not the usual idol romance. they go through trials to finally get there. I felt the romance; it was subtle moments yet very tense because she keeps rejecting him. There was that one moment when after a tense exchange, they look deeply into each other eyes, and for a moment, it was like they would kiss, then got interrupted. For me, there were many romantic moments in RF. I think romantic stories should have conflicts to be meaningful story; otherwise, it's just the side story. I like the entire cast in RF, they all acted really well. Oh, and RF is my all-time favorite of Xu Kai with a veteran actor, Zhu Zhanji (imperial grandson) and his grandfather (Emperor Yongle / Zhu Di). Next favorite is Yao Zhiming and Grandmother Mai. I supposed the third one might be Ding Yong Dai who plays his father, Chen Hong Bin in Eight Hundred, though that relationship was contentious and fraught, but performance was so good. I'm not sure who comes next, maybe the parents in SAHPH? so cute.

For me, these always come to mind first: ALP, Eight Hundred, RF, OUATILM, SAHPH, WOL, ABAY, FIYS, etc.

In fact, as a viewer, I find Xu Kai's best acting of his career is Royal Feast, but now Eight Hundred which is excellent too, but there's a quality in his performance how he delivered Zhu Zhanji that is very mature, a very fine performance. I like historical settings too. In RF, a lot of attention historical details.

OK you are right again. Though it is an official CCTV post but it's not an announcement they are airing it, it's a CCTV social media account trying to drum up social media engagements for its account.
thanks for keeping me honest, I was excited but at least it is on dual platforms (iQIYi and Youku), that is new for Xu Kai drama or the platform is trying to recoup its costs early, I read it is industry wide trend, but I haven't' seen dual platforms for Xu Kai dramas (eg web), have you? Is this true? "prior to Spring of the Blade, there is not a single pure web drama in Xu Kai's career that had a dual-platform release." Does it matter if it's exclusive or multi-platform?

I think this is only the second CCTV airing for Xu Kai drama, is that right?

To me, it's meaningful for Xu Kai to get a brand endorsement for this Japanese brand because they don't typically have Chinese celebrity (Xu Kai is the third one over the years) and it's their big 70 anniversary campaign.

I was just discovering that CCTV rarely air fantasy dramas, but CCTV co-produced this drama with iQIYi for its "philosophical ideas." Complex, philosophical concepts—especially when mixed with high-fantasy or time-travel logic—usually polarize MDL audiences. Somehow Douban watchers are okay they gave it 6.6, which is very good for a fantasy drama.
