it was in ep 28, when the emperor asked shi ying "who are you to her?" when SY was trying to accept the punishment in behalf of zhu yan. as an immortal official, he couldn't interfere in mortal affairs. moreover, the emperor threatened him that if he intervened, ZY's relatives and whole clan would be implicated so he couldn't do anything and let ZY accept the punishment herself alone
this made him realize that if he remains in priesthood, he can never protect her and be by her side. it was his wake up call
