Tell, why show?

Unfortunately, Rugal is a drama that demands you turn off your brain and just go with the flow. I only finished this one because of the world pandemic (unable to go out) coupled with the convenience of airing on Netflix. Unless you're looking for a mindless action-fest, you'd be better off moving to better things.

PLOT: A Plot Hole Fest Served with Bad Writing
--------------------------------------------------------------
The drama started with some promise, if not originality, but went downhill fast when it began to rely too much on action, eye candy, and special effects to make up for the writer's lack of experience and painfully simplistic narrative. The story really makes no sense and left no impression. Things happened because "reasons", twists were added because "why not?" and characters acted and reacting according to the "rule of cool" rather than logic.

If you are looking for a well-thought-out, or at the very least decent story, this is certainly not it.

CHARACTERS: Simplistic, Inconsistent and Unrelatable
--------------------------------------------------------------
Rather than go through each character individually, I'll talk about them in general since none of them really stood out. One of the show's biggest flaw is the writer's inability to create complex characters. Consequently, they all feel borderline cartoony. Think shonen anime where the only focus of the writer is to pile love and adoration onto Gang Gi Bum (ML), who I'm almost certain became Do Hyun's (the writer's) self-insert (aka Gary Sue).

Gang Gi Bum quickly becomes the sole focus of the story, the strongest among all the Rugal members, adored by both allies and enemies... he is a walking plot-line -- or rather, a stumbling one. You can connect every story to him in an egotistical way which not only grew old fast, but allowed no room to develop any other characters.

Perhaps the biggest aggrievance of all was the disservice rendered towards the four female characters who appear on more than one episode of this drama --none of which were unfortunately fleshed out or given agency.

The two female "antagonists", for example, were useless. Argo's chairman's treatment was especially jarring. We were often told by other characters that she was cool, that she shouldn't be underestimated, that "you don't know what she's capable of" only to be shown... absolutely nothing. Again, the writer wanted to claim she's strong/cool/influential without actually giving her agency to show those things. And it's the same thing with Susan, the female scientist of the show. Where we're told by other characters all these things about her personality because she doesn't even have enough air time to develop her...

Of course, the most inconsistent was poor Song Mi Na, the lone female member of Rugal. She went from being the second-best of the team to become the weakest link; complete with a few badass in distress scenes --which were promptly excused by the writer though characters exchanging comments regarding "how strong she is" and how "impressed they were with her". In so doing, the Do Hyun created a laughable cop-out for only showing her distress and having all her badassery apparently happen off-screen...

At the end of the day, the lack of depth the entire cast of characters was riddled with meant I couldn't connect, relate, or even care for any of them. I was never rooting for them to succeed. I was also unconcern whenever they were "in danger". They were wrapped in such a thick layer of plot armor, that it stood to reason they would come out victorious in the end. Heck, even the characters seem keenly aware of their plot armor (especially the ML) because they never displayed an ounce of fear, which marks an author as lacking experience and the confidence of putting his beloved characters through the grinder.

Which leads us to the next point.

WRITING: Amature. Tell, why show?
--------------------------------------------------------------
I could tell right away the writer didn't have experience because he relied a lot on exposition. Meaning he spoon-fed the audience the story through character dialogues rather than having us reach the conclusion he wanted through scene development.

A good writer will show, rather than tell. If he wants us to feel bad for a character, he'll dedicate time to showing how the character suffers rather than having him say "I'm so sad" in a short conversation. Although the process of showing will be longer, the result will be more powerful.

Simply put, if the audience is not moved to tears when a character cries on the screen... then the emotional buildup wasn't done correctly. In this case, telling us what the characters were feeling through dialogues resulted in a sense of disbelief and disconnect, which made me unable to empathize with any of them.

OVERALL [TL;DR]
--------------------------------------------------------------
Learn from my painful experience and skip this one if you're looking for a good show. The writing is atrocious, the fights grew old fast, the plot is messy and inconsistent, the characters lack complexity... In fact, the only thing Rugal has going for it was the eye candy, which suffered when they went full emo style with the ML. But even these leather-clad men aren't worth muscling through the diary of a fourteen-year-old who self-inserted into a fantasy where he's the center of the universe; men want to be his sidekicks, women want to bed him, enemies fall in love with him and everything happens based only on the "rule of cool".

SOKP: Where Royal Intrigues Are More Complicated Than Your Ex's New Relationship Status

HOLD ON TO YOUR IMPERIAL HATS, DRAMA ENTHUSIASTS!!!
Because "Story of Kunning Palace" is the kind of show thats more addictive than a caffeine IV drip. SOKP is not your typical tea-sipping romance-infused drama, its a captivating enigma wrapped in a historical conundrum, with more plot twists than a labyrinth. Its a tale where reverse harem meets mystery, and every character is so swoon worthy, even the palace walls are blushing <3

Bai Lu, our badass heroine, here as Jiang Xue Ning isnt just conquering hearts; shes slaying political foes and looking fabulous doing it💋There r 2 handsome dudes Zhang Zhe and Yan Lin, both vying for her attention like contestants in a royal reality show. Its a reverse harem showdown & jiang xue ning is the unwitting queen bee, swatting away admirers like theyr pesky palace mosquitoes. Jiang xue nings heart is like a rubiks cube & the poor guys—Yan Lin, Zhang Zhe, and Xie Wei are all trying to crack the code. Basically its a love triangle turned hexagon.

Now our man Zhang Ling He as Xie Wei; handsome as a greek god and jaw sharper than a ninja throwing star (HAD TO MENTION THAT LMFAO) isnt just part of the harem circus. Hes the unsung hero, & a guardian angel silently dropping nuggets of wisdom and occasionally facepalming at the chaos around him. Hes the guy secretly supporting jiang xue ning like a lovestruck ninja in the shadows. Beneath his sarcastic remarks & harsh words, lies a love so deep it makes Titanics jack and rose look like they had a casual fling. It felt as if watching a superhero show where the hero doesnt realize hes the hero, and the audience is collectively screaming, "Dude, shess right thereee!!!!!!"

The Xie wei mens trio, they are real comedy gem in this drama. The hilarious sidekicks, the MVPs of comedic relief, and the reason you'll be snorting your tea while trying to keep up with palace politics.

But lets talk plot, Jiang xue ning, after a bad ending in her past life, is back in the same palace, courtesy of fates twisted sense of humor, i guess. As if someone hit the "replay" button (quite literally) on her royal misadventures, and shes trying to navigate the maze of intrigue on her own.

Xie wei, our handsome badass, is so oblivious to his own feeling, he doesnt even realize hes fallen in love. Jiang xue ning is the oblivious queen, zhang zhe & yan lin are the competing court jesters, and xie wei is the dashing main character with a heart so hidden even he cant find it. Jiang xue ning remains blissfully unaware of the love vibes radiating from him & xie wei himself is probably wondering why his heart does the cha cha cha every time shes in the room ✨😝

Theres another baddie xue shu, the queen of making you simultaneously root against her. Shes got more schemes than a bond villain. Is she the villain?? the antihero?? or just a girl boss ahead of her time?? The plot is so mysterious and intriguing that an award winning storywriter would be taking notes.

Now, lets talk about the cast; stellar performances that could make a stone statue emote. Its like watching a masterclass in acting, with every eyebrow raise and dramatic pause deserving an award.

"Story of Kunning Palace" isnt just a drama; its a royal rollercoaster of emotions, a comedy of errors & a mystery that'll have u yelling. Seriouslyy. the chemistry is so palpable m surprised the screen hasnt caught fire yet. This drama isnt just good; its SO good its suspicious. its almost like finding a four leaf clover in a field of dandelions.. rare and borderline unbelievable.

As the grand tradition of slow burns, 'Story Of Kunning Palace' leaves us with a burning desire for more, more romance, more drama, and definitely more zhang ling he & bai lu moments that have us reaching for fire extinguishers. If ur not watching this drama, ur missing out on a hilarious, heartthrobbing, and mysteriously addictive masterpiece. I had alottt of fun watching this drama so i bet u will have too!!!! so GRAB ur popcorns & prepare for a journey so entertaining, even shakespeare wouldve been jealous ;D

Signing off
Thanks for reading the review <3
Yours, Angel

unrealistic and frustrating

I tried giving this drama a chance to like it but finding it so disappointing and very frustrated with the story. It is very unrealistic for the female lead who had a crush on the male lead and following him around. Very unrealistic for a the male lead to allow a fan (stranger) to get into his circle. How can a stranger (female lead) who had a crush on a celebrity and be able to get through the security, mistaken as girl friend, allow to ride in the bus with the team and so forth. The way the female lead chasing and following the male lead (who doesn't really know her) around and able to get into his circle of friend and team is nauseating. The female lead is supposed to be intelligent and gifted but too stupid to follow her crush without thinking about her own safety makes me angry about the whole story.

A true treasure among the BL shows.

I noticed this while scrolling through the feeds, and everyone seemed to like it. I was in the mood for a thriller at the time, so I chose this one.

This drama's mystery plot isn't particularly well developed; it felt almost predictable to me. The political aspect of this drama, on the other hand, is extremely well done. If not well executed, it could have been extremely boring. The romance, which often feels unwanted or unnecessary in these types of dramas, is something I really liked in this. This is a one-of-a-kind drama that successfully blends romance and politics without making either feel out of place.

This drama is about twins, Black and White, who have a powerful bond that causes them to feel each other's agony during a near-death experience. Their personalities are as diametrically opposed as chalk and cheese. They were separated after their parents divorced, causing them to lose contact with one another. One day, after returning to Thailand, White learns from Tod, a childhood friend, that Black is in a coma following a brutal attack on him, which rekindled White's connection with Black. He also learns that Black is now a member of a motorcycle gang, and he suspects that one of the members—Gram, Yok, or Sean—is to blame for Black's current state. As a result, he disguises himself as Black and joins the gang to discover the truth.

Although Black appeared to be a little different to everyone, no one noticed that it was another person disguised as Black, nor did anyone know that Black had a twin. Sean seemed to be the most affected by Black's sudden change, as he began to develop feelings for him.

In a BL, usually the supporting characters, as well as the female characters, usually play minor roles. They are used as tools to bring the main characters together or to cause conflict between them. However, in this drama, they each had their own point of view and story to tell. This really impressed me. Except for a few scenes, the characters in this drama are very well developed, and their actions and reactions are understandable. Of course, the characters aren't perfect, but they all have their own unique charms.

Both the main character and the supporting characters did an excellent job. Gun's performance was out standing and so was Off's. They portrayed every emotion almost flawlessly (Of course, nothing is perfect). Gun should be specially appreciated for successfully portraying two characters at a time who are too different to compare. The chemistry between the main leads was a visual treat and is very pleasing to watch. I hope to see Gun and Off together more often in the future. The actors who played Gram, Yok and even the actors who portrayed small roles like Grumpa and Tod were able to meet my expectations. The antagonists too were so well portrayed and this made this drama more appealing and entertaining.

Overall, this is a really outstanding BL that, in my opinion, deserves more attention and love. Almost every aspect of this drama is well-executed. This is a totally unique show that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys BLs, politics, or the actors.

Remember us and all we used to be.

After One and Only stabbed me in the heart, I needed justice, I needed closure and most of all I needed to hear Shi Yi say  "Zhousheng Chen, remember us and all we used to be." Theirs was such a splendid, intense love with so much passion and yearning that could not run its natural course. Sadly, after being restrained for ~5000 years, all that is unleashed are faint echoes of the past. Thus, my final impression is that what was, is never again.

What this is, is a very sweet, very ordinary, reasonably touching but hardly memorable love story that is markedly lacking in intensity. It falls down hard in its failure to connect the characters of the past with the present. Aside from appearance, both Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi could be entirely different people and this an entirely different drama. Of course in the present, they will be different but there must be that je ne sais quoi, that certain aura that lingers. Even the essence of their relationship changes, in fact it regresses. Shiyi and Zhousheng Chen of the past were of one heart and mind - she gifts part of her dowry to pacify Nanxiao and accepts her marriage hoping to reassure Zixing of her Prince Nanchen's loyalty. Shi Yi of the present asks no questions, she just trusts Zhousheng Chen absolutely without understanding his family's background or his plans. And he tries to protect her without telling her anything - it is the one thing about him that bugged me in the novel and it is the one thing they should have but did not change! As such, the sense of them being soulmates that are connected on a level beyond words is not there.

Ren Jialun and Bai Lu are both very solid actors with good enough chemistry that I genuinely enjoyed the good (pink moped), bad (lame kiss) and ugly (I am ready) of their moments together. Overall I enjoyed Ren Jialun's endearing portrayal of the shy, awkward and introverted professor whose world goes from revolving around uninhabitable planets to revolving around Shi Yi. That said, there were some truly cringe moments and he often came across as having no fire in his belly, likely due to his heavy sighing and lethargic, monotonous line delivery. I must praise how even though it took awhile, they fell into a much more natural rhythm as a couple in the last quarter of the drama and I was moved by how they grieved together and consoled one another. So despite some initial hiccups, there is genuine relationship development and that aspect finishes strongly.

The main issue with this drama that it lacks both plot and engaging and complex supporting characters. Everything really revolves around the two main leads and their romance, which moves too slowly and uneventfully to really anchor the drama. Besides Uncle Lin and possibly Mei Xing, none of the supporting characters are that likeable or empathetic. Zhousheng Chen's stepmother is the only truly complex and interesting secondary character, everybody else including the villains are rather two dimensional and the two cloddish servants are downright annoying. The plot is for the most part suspended in favour of the romance before it rushes through to the end. It is also rife with somewhat melodramatic rich family tropes from greed and envy to infidelity.

If One and Only is slow burn, Forever and Ever is like watching paint dry by comparison because there is no burn. I had to entertain myself by speculating on who got reincarnated into who and looking for hidden clues and traces of the past while mourning the fact that I was not going to see Zhousheng Chen reborn as a present day sexy beast. Which begs the question: considering how tortuous One and Only was, should Forever and Ever be watched as a standalone romance? Well, without the backstory, this is just about how an absolutely gorgeous but likely slightly delusional voice dubber falls head over heels in love with a fictional ancient drama character Prince Nanchen. She throws herself at a complete stranger; a nutty, loner of a professor with the same name who is a bit slow on the uptake but eventually realises he just got very, very lucky and thus the story unfolds. If that works for you, then by all means, skip the heartache that is One and Only.

I only watched this because I was looking for Prince Nanchen and Eleven. Sadly the future is but a mere shadow of the past. But still this is a sweet, well acted love story so I am not throwing rocks at it or at the actors. Nonetheless, this sequel did not live up to its potential so I can only rate it a 7.5. I would give both dramas together a 8.0-8.5.

Postscript:
For those of you who still need closure, there is a very well fan made alternate ending ending for One and Only produced by industry professionals. I have fan subbed it and hidden it as a spoiler in the comment section of my One and Only review.

frustration at its finest

tw// mention of rape

the trailer made me go, "oh! this doesn't look so bad! it looks cute and light! let's go for it!". well... the drama in its entirety is a hot mess. no, it's not the spicy good kind of mess that makes me look forward for more episodes. it's the mess that makes you wonder what went through the heads of the writers.

one thing that made me hooked into wanting to watch this is the actors from past dramas i watched. i honestly kinda feel bad for the the actors because it feels like they were trying their best to make up to portray their characters. sadly, there's literally no depth to the characters despite ton's dad brainwashing his son with such nonsense and misogynistic beliefs. the writers had the chance to give depth to ton's character and show his side of the story but we got absoluTeLy nothing! so, the whole time i couldn't help but detest ton because he was honestly being such an ass and made chon uncomfortable in the early episodes pressuring him about banging a girl to prove his masculinity.

three years with ai and ni.... not once did ton suspect anything going on???? i may be a clown but i haven't reached this level of clownery yet. i also couldn't find myself rooting for ai and ni when they forced chon to come out to them. another character that grinded my butters was nueng... what was the writers thinking making a rape victim attempt to rape someone????? honestly.... in each episode, i felt like i'd end up hating every single character. thankfully, characters like chon's mom, na, the nail lady and miriam exist.

the chemistry between chon and ton is not bad... but it's quite plain. the way their relationship developed itself is questionable. dude legit banged chon after confessing and chon, one who's known to always be the frantic type in such situations didn't flinch one bit. i honestly found ton unlikable and his possessiveness didn't appeal to me at all.

if there's another bl drama that features a revenge driven ex girlfriend after this, i'm officially teleporting to space because i'm so done with it.

overall, this is a drama that isn't anything new that does have a few charming points (comedic scenes and few likable supporting characters) but completely fails to keep my interest to the end.

and we cheered for mystery case solving dramas

So the premise is that our leading actress li landi plays Shen Wan, who is a young prodigy that has the excellent skills of a physician and a coroner. After her father is wrongfully accused of corruption, both her father and mother are killed by assassins, and while attempting to help Shen Wan escape, their friend Qin Liang also dies at the hand of these assassins, leaving only Shen Wan alive. She takes on the identity of Qin Liang's daughter, an old patient of hers, Qin Wan, who actually already passed a year ago, but news of her death had not yet reached her family. She returns as Qin Wan, and quickly forms good connections with noble families with her physician skills. After a murder case occurs, she is eventually able to showcase her coroner skills as well, that were taught to her by her father. Hoping to make a name for herself as a coroner, her goal is to eventually travel to the capital to investigate her father's case and restore his title as an upright official. She continues using her forensic + coroner skills to solve multiple murder cases that happen in her town. I'm seeing some people say that FL is too OP at the moment and how everything's going the way she needs it to. Well, idk what to say people, sorry she's intelligent and skilled, and maybe I don't want to see her trying to prove her identity for 10+ episodes like in the Double—we're saving time for the murders and eventual romance!

One of her connections include mr. ao rui peng who plays Yan Chi, nephew to the emperor, one of the youngest generals to lead Shunxi army, good at martial arts and also good at detective work, etc. you get the idea. This is my first time watching him and while I didn't find him very handsome in moonlight mystique, I think he looks great here! Someone said something about a fan perpetually facing towards him and they're not wrong - somehow faint wind is blowing on him in almost every scene, even indoors (hilarious). I quite like his acting so far, and I especially love li landi's acting. I thought she was great in our starry love but couldn't finish that because of the story + male lead. She's so pretty in this drama, I absolutely love her outfits and she looks stunning in purple + her line delivery is as natural as usual. She carries herself with a calm demeanour, but that doesn't cover up her fierceness within.

Regarding the romance (YEA IK MOST OF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE ROMANCE) it was kind of love at first sight for Yan Chi. In the early episodes, they have many moments where you can see him falling for her deeper, it's very endearing. I've been watching mostly slowburn and enemies to lovers dramas like the princess's gambit, so this was kind of a breath of fresh air? It's not like their romance is given that much time to develop that early though cause they're too busy kicking ass and taking names. It's looking like possibly 6 episodes ish per murder case? So nothing is going too fast, you just see these small cute moments they share! Hes probably held her wrist in almost every episode so far and that little moment of contact always makes me smile. Shes proven herself as a smart and upright individual who cares a lot about bringing justice to the dead and the wronged, you can't blame the guy (and lowkey a lot of other dudes) for falling for her that quick. He respects her, protects her, and supports her—and is one of the only people around that can stomach autopsies (guys he already wiped her sweat in episode 2 during an autopsy, are they moving too fast?). He's also one of the only people that are suspicious about her identity, and he's also hoping to investigate her father's case as it involves someone who was close to him. I don't think Shen Wan will accept him that quickly since he still doesn't know her true identity until who knows when, but until then, we're just gonna see her stuck with him regardless while they solve cases alongside each other. Now, upon finishing this drama, even though they do get together a little earlier than expected, their interactions aren't cringy or too much, nor do they take away from the serious plot lines. Their support for one another helps them grow as individuals (as if getting even more good is possible for these two) and them being together just MAKES SENSE.

About the cases, they're actually pretty interesting. I don't find the murders/autopsies gory or gross or anything, but maybe that's just me. Everything's kinda fake enough for me to not care. I like the way they find clues along the way and actually manage to piece everything together. They are truly doing detective work—there are calculations, logic, they take the right steps to figure out the motives and intent of everyone involved. You're kind of aware and also kind of not on who to suspect, (first case was obvious, the next one.. not so much), so it's like you're solving cases with them. It lowkey reminded me of Scooby doo and the mystery gang (and I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids!!). But also this is my first time watching a case solving drama so I can't compare it to anything. Editing of the scenes is a little weird at times, they seem to like tilting shots at certain serious scenes, but I don't pay that much attention to it. Overall, I really like the costumes, settings, and plot so far. edit: YUPPP THE ROMANCE IS ROMANCING. Also, be prepared for the last mystery case as that was genuinely the biggest mystery of all! Trust me, you'll want to go into it blind.

finale edit: absolutely loved the way they tied up this drama. now THIS is how a drama should end. no loose ends, no plot holes, no unnecessary deaths, (albeit quite a few necessary ones), and yes, if it wasn't obvious enough, its a beautifully well done HAPPY ENDING!!!

Mixed Reviews? Just watch it.

Im going to give my opinion on the complaints i see, whilst trying to remain unbiased because Pit babe (1+2) are easily in my top 10.

1. "There wasn't enough recap from the first season, I was confused!"
That’s entirely on you. I know my memory’s trash too, so you know what I did when season two dropped? I rewatched season one. Simple as that. You can’t fault a show for not spoon-feeding you a 30-minute recap just because you didn’t bother catching up.

It’s just common sense if a sequel comes out years after the original, whether it’s a series or a movie, you go back and refresh your memory. That’s your job as a viewer. Expecting the story to pause and re-explain everything just because you forgot is wild.

2. "Where are the authorities?"
Our main antagonist isn’t just some random thug he’s a very well-connected billionaire (or at least extremely wealthy) with ties to businessmen, politicians, and all sorts of shady elites. He’s also full of pride and ego. Involving the police would risk exposing himself and be an admission that he couldn’t handle things on his own that he had to rely on “low-level pawns” to do the dirty work for him. That’s not his style.

And from the protagonists’ side, calling the cops would be pretty much useless. With the kind of power Tony holds, the second law enforcement got involved, he’d be tipped off instantly. The whole thing would backfire, fast. In short: the cops aren’t missing they’re just irrelevant in a world where money, influence, and abilities speak louder.

3. "How the hell is Tony back? Lazy screenwriting."
(Skip this part if you're avoiding spoilers.)
People keep acting like this came out of nowhere, but it’s literally been explained since season one—this whole series is built around people with special abilities. That’s not a new thing. Tony’s ability is that he can bring himself back to life if he swallows his own blood at the time of death. It’s not some random plot twist; it’s tied directly to the rules of the world they’ve set up.

The downside? His body still needs time to recover and he has to be closely monitored after. He’s not some untouchable immortal, and the show doesn’t treat him like one. It’s not lazy writing it's actually one of the more consistent things in the story. We were given clear answers to the what, how, and why. Just because you missed it, doesn’t mean the writing failed.

4. "The acting was terrible."
This one’s super subjective. Personally, I thought the acting was solid line delivery, emotion, all of it felt on point. There were plenty of scenes where you could clearly see what the characters were feeling or thinking without them having to say a word. That’s real acting. It’s not just about speaking lines it’s about expressing, embodying, feeling the role. And in Pit Babe 2, I felt that.

To me, “bad acting” is when someone’s just reciting words with no depth, no connection to the character or the emotion behind it. I never got that vibe here. If anything, it felt like the cast really got their roles and committed to them.

5. "The plot was bad/not present."
(Heavy spoilers, read after watching.)

This is hands down the worst opinion I’ve seen in the reviews.

We’re continuing from season one where Tony was running a human trafficking facility for superhuman babies. That was the whole climax, and in the end, his plan was exposed and he was presumed dead. Season two picks up from that exact mess, and people are acting like the plot disappeared?

The main crew is trying to make sure something like that never happens again. That’s where the serum comes in. They’re developing one that can remove special abilities. The point is to protect people who don’t want their powers or can’t control them. Jeff is a great example of this. His ability is unstable and dangerously strong. If he doesn’t get rid of it, it could seriously hurt him or others.

Then conflict hits fast. With Kim leaving, the team is weaker. They try to patch that by bringing in North as a new racer. That’s already a big shift in dynamics, but then enters Willy. New racer, new energy, and he's openly interested in P’Babe. For the first time ever, Babe comes in second place, which throws everything off. The team feels it. Babe feels it. It rattles him hard and starts pulling at his relationship with Charlie.

Charlie, on the other hand, is stressed and pouring everything into the serum. He’s not trying to be distant on purpose—he just wants them to be safe. He wants a future where Babe isn’t hunted or used for his ability, ever again. So he temporarily steps away from racing to finish the serum, but that only creates more space between him and Babe.

Then Dean returns. That alone brings more tension. He’s promoted to racer to help support the team while Charlie’s away, but let’s be honest, Dean’s presence always comes with drama.

And just when they’re trying to hold it together, guess who comes back? Tony. Not in the loud, obvious way people expected, but silently through Willy. Tony’s no longer chasing the boys himself. He’s watching from the shadows, playing the long game. His new goal is creating a serum that gives special abilities. Imagine how much money that could bring in—selling powers to the highest bidder, especially in military or elite circles.

So while the team is trying to eliminate the danger of abilities, Tony’s building the exact opposite. And while that’s happening, Babe’s shaken confidence, Charlie’s distance, Dean’s reappearance, and the team reshuffling all add more layers to the actual plot.

There was a plot. And not just a basic one. It was detailed, emotional, and connected all the way back to season one. Pit Babe is the only Thai BL series that’s even touched this kind of storyline. Calling it unoriginal, bad, non-existent, or lazy just because it isn’t your cup of tea is just a lazy and shallow take.

((Its like saying Vanilla ice cream is terrible just because you don't like it, its not disgusting it's just not something you personally enjoy; therefore you have no right to deter others away from it.)**)

Now on the complaints i expect to see.

1. "Alan was hellbent on protecting everyone, why is he so selfish now?"

At first, it didn’t make sense to me either. Alan has always been the caretaker the rock of the team. He’s the oldest, the boss, the mentor. Everyone leans on him. But season two reveals his old spinal injury from racing hasn't healed and it’s come back and worsened. His condition is chronic, affecting his nerves and mobility, its not just old age and something he can get rid of. He can’t race, he can’t pushd his body like he used to, he cant properly protect the team. Altogether it shoves him into feeling useless, he knows he can't protect anyone; and if he goes through surgery to get rid of these spinal issues he'd be even more limited on how he could help because he'd be recovering.

That helplessness is what pushes him into bargaining with Tony. He believes going to Tony might make him stronger and give him a way to protect Dean and Kenta. He’s never dealt with Tony directly, he isn't truly aware about how underhanded Tony can be and he genuinely thinks he can negotiate his way into being useful again and maybe even outsmart Tony.

Then it all blows up. Instead of saving anyone, Alan ends up betraying trust and landing himself in danger. He knows exactly what he’s done. ( when Jeff confronts him, Alan doesn’t argue. He knows he broke his own rules. He knows he lied, and worse, he endangered his people. That silence that acceptance that’s not selfishness. It’s accountability after bad judgment, born from desperation. )

I'll always have the opinion that if you didn't like a series because you refused to pay attention, or it wasn't the genre you liked, or the plotline wasn't your preference, or you've watched less then 3 episodes. You cannot give a valid review nor should you try. A series isn't bad just because you specifically didn't like it.

A worth watch !!

My first venture to jdramas …..and I can’t explain how happy I am to have given this one a try ….
Even after seeing that it got almost all the reviews towards the very positive end of the rating spectrum ...I still was hesitant (maybe bec first dramas are always memorable ...you wish to carefully pick the critically acclaimed ones so as to make sure you aren’t disappointed)...and I am really glad to say that this drama has me looking forward to my journey in dorama land …

This is way more than just a typical rom com ...it’s an ordinary story that gives you hope and courage to fight for what you need ...tells you to cry, stand up and face the mess ….( I feel weird writing this ....cuz actually I am team it’s okay to run away as long as you are willing to come back and fight but yaa ...it’s true that someday or the other ...you gotta deal with all the shit that comes your way)
( I haven’t mentioned the story ...cuz synopsis provided by MDL is way too good ...pls check it )

The positives …

No annoying characters …( I don’t know if this is common for doramas to not have them ...and if it is then ...I am dancing already)

They don’t keep on dragging an issue like anything and just talk it out …(dare not ask for more in a rom drama …!! )

Amazing bonding between the characters ….I love the entire house arrangement ….housemates are so supportive of each other ….and every character individually is so likable ...and the dog’s so adorable ... …(even I wish to live in a share house like that …!!)

Life Lessons ...well some dramas teach you small and important things ….I feel it’s one of those dramas ...it’s a happy happy stuff but yeah it doesn’t deviate from the fact that life got troubles too ...and just because you are good at something doesn’t mean that the path will be easy ...it might be easier than others ...but no bed of roses for anyone here.

Also I like the fact that the ML makes FL feel that not everything needs to be captured and shared over the internet ...ofc she likes doing it ….but addiction is not good you can’t start living just to share your life on internet ...you sometimes need to really snap out of it ...and live somethings just for yourself …(that’s probably the best part)

I enjoyed the side characters too ….as someone who skips scenes without much thought...I really didn’t touch that forward button ...so you know it’s amazing

Negatives …
I don’t know why but I end up watching love triangles all the time (don't yell spoiler spoiler ...it's there from the very first ep) ...I am a bit annoyed by that ...tho this one is like way better than others I have come across ..still
(guess I need to now start checking tags before I watch)
Also the show doesn't start off too well ....like the initial eps do feel weird and difficult to keep up with !
and the main couple don't give couple vibes ....they'd be better as friends.

But all in all I loved the drama ...and am way too happy to have this as my first !!
I hope everyone who’s reading this does give it a try!

Destiny is not a matter of chance it is a matter of choice. -: W.Bryan

Basing from the the first half this drama tells about the story of Ye Xi's love story in her every page of life that because of those men she always ended up dead.. Then a Divine Doctor that has always loved, cherished, cares for her trully and always saves her, But because of a curse that he could not fall inlove he could not express or trully openly say his feelings and always love and watch over her secretly..

This drama is just very fun, light, and Li Hongyi and Huang Ri Ying are just cute to watch espicially when Li Hong Yi is jealous :-D hahah.. I just binge watch every episode that is uploaded and wanting more..

SO much wrong with this

I came to this because I just discovered Takeru Satoh - I just watched all the Rouroni Kenshi movies and wanted to see something else he was in. This was one of the few things I could find - and man was this a horrible shift.

Everything about this drama is so wrong - from beginning to end, this drama is what is wrong with Asian rom-coms. That someone thought this was a good story of a ‘romantic’, healthy adult relationship is just a bit disturbing.

While commenters have issue with the age gap - that is not really the problem - its the maturity gap. She has the maturity level of a teenager while the ML has the maturity level of an adult . Not to mention the power dynamic that he is her superior at work. It’s all just so wrong.

Let’s start with the idea that a teenage girl, on her day of graduating from high school, goes to a temple to pray that she finds a good man, stumbles upon a woman with a medical emergency and the dashing, handsome doctor shows up, smiles at her, pats her on the head and whola! - I’m in love! To the point of running off to become a nurse so she “can be near him’ - not because she wants to be a nurse and help people, doesn’t decide to become doctor because she just witnessed him saving the woman - but, no, lets be a nurse so I can stand next to him - wrong!

She then spends 5 years to go to school so she can get a job at his hospital, then shows up and runs around proclaiming her love for this person in the middle of the workplace- to a man who she has only even, met briefly once in her life. She then spends all her time bumbling around, acting like a pre-teen with a crush on an idol. And she never grows out of it. Wrong!

Then there is the whole awkward dating situation - again, the maturity gap happens - he clearly has experience and she clearly has none. She has this very romanticized, teenager mentality of what being in a relationship means and it just doesn’t fit - most of the time she seems terrified - that dear-in-the-headlights, ready to jump out of her skin look on her face and in her demeanor - very subservient, bowing and apologizing all the time - all the while he is calling her an idiot every five minutes. It is just the most unhealthy dynamic and yet the writers/directors and even viewers - all think this is ‘romantic’, it is not.

You never get a real sense of why he likes her and it isn’t event until the second to last episode that he says anything. He spends most of the time ignoring her, glaring at her and generally looking like he is annoyed with her and then one day, just turns around on the street and kisses her - what?!?!

I also do not see, not just one, not two, but three grown men falling in love with her - that this idea of an immature 22 year old, who behaves like teenager is somehow so appealing that men are falling over themselves - is just absurd.

And then there is the older sister of the dead girlfriend who shows up and just happens to look EXACTLY like the dead girlfriend, hasn’t seen the guy since she died and is now ‘in-love’ with him - seriously! I cant even with this stupidity.

Overall - most of the problems come back to this maturity issue. it would be one thing, if through out the show you see her mature and him soften - but that never happens (he does, ever-so-slightly - but not really enough)

Precious Chinese History, Poor Editing

The Imperial Age is the story of Zhu Di (Emperor Yongle of Ming Dynasty, reigned 1402 to 1424) from his youth to his death at 64 years old. Compared with other Ming Dynasty dramas, this drama has fewer fictionalized events though some historical events have been watered down to make the characters more appealing, while others have been dramatized for dramatic effects. This version of the story is perhaps closest to the historical records.

Zhu Di was the fourth son of Zhu Yuanzhang who was the founding Emperor of Ming Dynasty (reigned 1368 to 1398). His oldest brother, Zhu Biao was the crown prince designated for the throne. As Zhu Yuanzhang and his wife have humble origin as peasants (Zhu Yuanzhang was said to be a monk), the dynamics within the household are like any families of the commoners addressing each other informally. The Zhu household lives in harmony with loving parents and amicable children. Unlike most palace dramas, in this drama, it is very refreshing to watch the informality of parental and sibling relationships, with the Empress personally cooking in the kitchen for her family with no fanfare (there’s no wastage of food as in The Royal Feast, another drama set in Ming Dynasty). Palace life is simpler and happier.

Cheng Yi acts as the juvenile Zhu Di from episode 1 to episode 9. For once, Cheng Yi gets a happy and mischievous role as a prince who is well loved and pampered by his parents and siblings. His acting here is convincing as a 13-16 year old boy and rather funny as he gets paddled on the backside multiple times for his disobedience, and the actor’s bare back is even shown, fleetingly, when he’s being tendered for the wound.

Feng Shaofeng becomes the young 17 year old Zhu Di until his death at 64 as Emperor Yongle. Feng Shaofeng has a very affable demeanor, making the Zhu Di character very lovable, though he looks too mature for a 17 year old initially. Despite that, Feng Shaofeng looks very regal and authoritative, and has the charisma of an emperor. The drama lays out carefully all the events that have taken place prior to the uprising / civil war, and how Zhu Di comes to wrangle power from his nephew and become the Emperor. Ruthless and cruel as recorded in history books, the drama manages to show such cruelty is justifiable and the character is indeed a deserving respectable figure. Whatever it may be, I am not a historian and it’s not my place to judge the accuracy of such depiction. For me, the logic makes sense and ties in very well with the rest of the story and hence to call Zhu Di a great Emperor of his time.

My Verdict

The original version of the drama is said to be 80 episodes long. It is trimmed down to 45 episodes to fulfill the current government requirement. As such, one can imagine how the final product would become with a cut down of almost 50% of the work completed. There are many skipped scenes, making the story disjointed and can be confusing for non-Mandarin speakers. It’s at times like watching a jigsaw puzzle with the tail placed on the face, and the mouth on the rear side.

Despite the horrendous editing, this drama is still very enjoyable for its authenticity to the actual events. Though a palace story, there are no usual harem cat fights, no rivalry and scheming among the princes, but with a lot of resignations, tears and heartaches of losses. Feng Shaofeng has wept multiple times here with a unique wail. There are also long scenes of both the Emperor Hongwu’s (Zhu Yuanzhang’s) and Emperor Yongle’s (Zhu Di’s) accomplishments in their land reform, establishment of secret police (Jinyiwei aka Embroidered Uniform Guard), purging and execution of officials and their families, wars with the north-east, new capital and foreign engagement, military, bureaucratic reform, Zheng He’s expeditions to the south seas (just by-passingly, not in great details) etc. These scenes can be boring for some viewers who are more interested in action packed story telling. Having said that, some details are very funny and humorous. I believe many of such delightful details have been deleted in order to retain the main events for a shorten version of the story.

Emperor Hongwu has 26 sons from his Empress and various concubines, but in the drama, he’s shown to be only with his Empress all the time displaying his devotion to her. Likewise for Emperor Yongle who is devoted only to his wife Empress Xu. Therefore, there are no cat-fights among the concubines, and no revelation of how many concubines perish with the Emperors when they die. All in all, this drama tries to emphasize on devotion among the men and women in the story which may not be a reality.

The battle scenes are very well made though certain scenes have been reused again and again for various different battles. The endings of most of the characters are similar to what have been recorded in history books, with a few exceptions to make them more palatable for the viewers.

The whole cast is commendable, and the official soundtracks are touching and beautiful. If you are a Chinese history fan, you’d love this drama. I have thoroughly enjoyed it despite some of the shortcomings due to the massive editing. The original version (80 episodes) must have been a masterpiece.

Recommended for history buffs. Great watch! Bravo!

"A very sweet, and awefully bitter dream."

The masterpiece of a Webtoon is adapted into a drama. My mind sank :(
It sank at the thought of sadness as I grew attached to the cruel story of an unchangeable past filled with regret and how it latched itself onto the people of the present. But, with a hesitant heart, I watched and was reminded again that as much pain as this story brings me, I love it so much.

In the context of the drama, this is a story that focuses on the past and present stories all at once. It was a story that helped me see suicide and life in a different way. The drama, while slightly behind the webtoon, did beautifully in depicting such an intense and challenging story. I really think this is something everyone should watch. The beauty of the story, the bittersweet journey knowing the ending, and the lesson it leaves for the present and to us as watchers. There were some added plot points that I felt were not needed even though I understood why they were added. It just made the story a bit messy.

The fact that I immediately went back to the Webtoon to bask in it because I was so reluctant to leave it is a testament to the power it held.

The acting, Ha Min and So Mang carried. Maybe it was because their story was so impacting, because the actors made them so real and alive, that the rest of the cast (aside from Sunhee) fell short. The emotional scenes really made it hard for me to concentrate on the present cast's emotions. It felt stiff at times.

If I am going, to be honest, I only know one song from the OST and so the rating is a bit low. If I had my way, I would have given the overall rating a 10 just for the story but :/ alas, here I am. I will listen to the rest one day (today probably) and try to piece together my heart but for now, the OST left little impact.

Now, I will definitely be rewatching this and rereading the Webtoon. Why? Because it is relevant. Because it taught me that while the result was due to other people and many circumstances, it was no one's fault. It propelled me to have the courage to unhesitantly offer a hand to someone in need. It helped me want to remember things in a positive light while being able to move past it and live my own. It was a story that resonated with me. One that made me feel for Ha Min because he was just really, really tired and wanted to rest a bit. It made me feel for So Mang that was so stuck in the past and full of guilt. It made me sad to see Ha min in his brother, Jae Min as he had to deal with being the outlet everyone is rectifying their guilt using. They are all very kind people that couldn't bear to hate the world that was testing them. :(

I hope, no one reading this has to bear with it alone and those that do, grab onto the hand that reaches out to them. I also hope, we all find the courage to offer a hand to someone in need. I hope this story touches you in some way. I hope you read the Webtoon after watching it.

For those who have lost someone, I hope the past liberates you as it did for So Mang in the end.

It is a shame, that Ha Min didn't see himself the same way So Mang saw him. That he shined so brilliantly and was her light. I hope everyone can see this in themselves, or at least believe it for someone in your life probably thinks that way :)

okay, I'm done. This review was just thought vomit and not very organized :/ Needless to say, I LOVED IT! YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH!! One thing though. The letter. I know most want her to read it and a part of me does too, but we know what she was to him and we know how he felt about her. There was nothing in that letter that would change that and so I think it is better left unread.

I could write some meta analysis, but we would be here all day. just give it a shot. don't be that person that comes back 4 years later, regretting the skip.

The Best Cdrama I watched so far

Cdramas have tendency to have some toxic/red flag behaviors from some of its characters and I love how supportive and healthy all the relationships are. Hidden Love reminds me of what young first love feels like. The male lead was not only goodlooking but he also played his character well. Whenever he looked at the FL, it gave me butterflies. It was such a refreshing series that it totally on my re-watch list. Normally, with CDramas I start losing interest because of so many episodes and this is the first time that I wished it was longer.. I definitely recommend this drama!

Remake of Novel NOT Drama

FULL DISCLAIMER:
Okay, first of all people need to know that this is a remake based on Zhao Qian Qian’s novel which is also clearly stated in the opening sequence so don’t come watching this thinking it’s gonna be a copy and past version of the Chinese drama. I’ve not read the novel so have no idea how close the drama is. My advise would be to lower your expectations, better still have none and don’t compare cos you will most likely be disappointed.

Secondly, whilst I did try the Chinese version I dropped it after one episode so I was kinda happy when I found out that there would be a Thai version especially one that’s not yet another Korean drama. I do love Thailand for remaking as many Korean dramas as they have but honestly, it’s so darn refreshing that they went with China.

As always, starting with the negatives which for me were the second leads. I tend not to like them if I’m being quite honest and this was no different. I found them both annoying until I didn’t anymore but I also didn’t like Pai’s so called friend Wawa. I found her to be selfish and her scenes always consisted of her moaning which resulted in my skipping most of her scenes unless she was with Pai or Pupaa.

STORY
This is pretty much the usual Cookie Cutter school love story for me, I’m not much of a School drama fan. Nothing really new to bring to the table but I guess for me, I found the fluff of it all refreshing….explained in my final thoughts. Also, whilst I did love the fact that the drama wasn’t just about the romance, I would’ve loved to get more light on the friendship between Ta and Pupaa. One thing I didn’t really like is how Pai always needed someone to come and solve her problems for her. Whilst the drama is made from China origin, I loved how they still managed to incorporate some Thai stuff into it to make it feel a bit more Thai. My favourite parts of the drama were definitely the Special Scenes.

ACTING/CAST
The acting isn’t anything groundbreaking but considering the actress playing Pai is a newbie, I personally think she did rather well. I enjoyed the main couple the most and what little friendship was used, I thought they had nice chemistry and fitted the characters well.

MUSIC
I only noticed the opening song which I loved. Oh and the lyric free background music.

REWATCH VALUE
For me, yes because I’ve probably enjoyed it more than I ever imagined I would.

I’m not usually into the overly fluffy romcoms but as far as Thai productions go, this is possibly the fluffiest I’ve ever seen which is a huge deal for me as most Thai I watch tend to come from Channels 3, 7 and One31 so you know there is a big difference. I didn’t feel out of my comfort zone which is strange as I previously mentioned, I’m not a fan of fluff or school and some scenes you could tell were a bit too cringey but somehow I didn’t cringe as much as I normally would from other countries. It’s been a nice experience watching a drama without fear of someone getting kidnapped, assaulted or stalked by some killer. This is a true romcom and I wish more were like this - danger free!
