A must watch atleast once in your life....

Just pure raw emotions..... What a heartbreaking story..... really tugged on my hearstrings..... a must watch. Really teaches you the importance of famiy and how much they sacrifice for you.... watching this makes you feel so grateful for the life you have. There isnt much action and its a slow burn drama but yet it makes you love it. A simply lovely drama. Its the defintion of actions speak louder than words. It just hits hard when you realize that all of sang woo s actions were justified because this is what you would expect from a small boy from the city. The grandmother was imperfect yet she tried her best and sacrificed so much for her grandchild because she loved him. She put up with all of his nasty actions because she was soft hearted and she really loved him despite him hating her..... i really cried throuhgt the entire drama. It reallys makes you value your grandparents. Overall i highly recommend it.... some people might get bored in the start but just stay till the end.... i promise you wont regret it

pretty but ordinary

this was one of the korean movies I was excited to watch. but midway through, I actually thought, “wow, this is boring.” I really like the leads but the story is kinda unrealistic and the characters not very interesting. everything was pretty to watch but it didn’t really touch me at all. I really like Shin Shi Ah, but I feel like they didnt give her any back story, no interactions with her family or her best friend. And for the male lead, we barely know anything about him. I dont think it’s possible for someone to have this problem and go to school like normal.

Twisted and Complicated, One-Sided Love!

This just joined GagaOOLala and while on sick leave, I thought to give it a try and what a thrill (especially for me as someone who is interested in Psychology and how minds work).

Please watch it first before reading this, then come back and see if any of the things I say make any sense. 😁

With a high school setting, it might be discouraging because how many high school dramas have we seen? but bear with it for a moment because there is a twist to this story,

We meet a young man with a complicated family history of a sick mother and a father he detests, resulting in him wanting to carry to the burden of the hospital bills. This leads to looking for work. Just his luck (bad or otherwise) that his new high school friend knows of a high paying job and can hook him up. What he is not aware of is that the friend is not only involved in nefarious stuff, but that he is also in love. I see the MDL tag calling this a bromance, there was nothing bro about this romance. Se Jun was in love, he just didn't express it verbally, but he expressed it in every other way. I believe this is because he wasn't sure if he could come out in that way to YJ. He wanted to know Yun Jae's life, needs, interests and wanted to be included in his life. Sadly, Yun Jae is straight as a ruler and interested in a girl who unfortunately only had eyes for Se Jun.

What I found intriguing was how in the end, because of his love for YJ, Se Jun handed himself over to the police for the last crime he committed but, refuses to say why. I would like to put it to you that it's because he fears outing himself. Telling the police that the girl was a proxy for YJ would sound beyond depraved and it really was.

Before the SA, SJ was involved in the underground club, but he drew a line on what he would participate in or not. He also didn't go into that motel room intending to SA the girl. You could see the moment he grew envious of her for receiving such an intimate and romantic gift from YJ and in his jealous rage, he made that awful decision.

In the end, this is a story about one-sided, unrequited love. The girl liked SJ, but SJ liked YJ and YJ liked the girl and nobody won, but everyone paid the price. Deeply unpredictable and gripping to watch. A high recommend from me.

Adorable!

This was so cute! I watched it after randomly finding it on Viki and really enjoyed it. A very fun and adorable high school romance. I liked the main two characters a lot and love that we really got to know them and watch them grow thoughout the movie! Their relationship was fun to watch develop too. Them both having the interest in space and seeing them bond over that was really sweet! I really like how it ended as well! So cute! If you like a a good high school romance, I really recommend this one!

When Pretend Seem Real

Finally, I was able to watch this movie. I was intrigued by the title itself and with Brendan in a Japanese environment.
A person for rent to act in any way needed by the family is quite an unusual job. I think this stems out from services of having personal hosts for a day, a girl Friday or a Geisha to entertain.

I find the concept of Rental Family quite odd. And as Philip said at the interview, he felt this is lying. and it is! If it is a one-time deal, perhaps he can get away with it. As Shinji said, they are meeting emotional needs of a family. But how far would you go to meet that need?

The movie is almost two hours, but we see different sides of the Rental Family odd jobs. All pretend, but to the families around who needed emotional healing, they seem real. And there is the danger of getting too invested and personal. In a society that is so fast-paced, emotional connection sometimes gets left. This movie tells us that all of us needed someone to somehow be a friend, a brother, a sister, a dad or mom. It shows how much society had focused on physical achievements rather than human relations. To Philip, some of those pretends, were related to his own experiences. At some point, I was teary when Kiko San was in his hometown.

Somehow there is a redeeming factor in the movie. A wake-up call for Shinji to revise his services. Philip gets to be himself before Mia. For Philip to be there for Kiko San till his death, something that filled the void of his own loss in the past. Aiko to stand up to Shinji and quit. The Rental Family supporting Philip to get out of trouble. I am glad the movie ended in a good note.

"Meowonderful!"

I was in the mood for something soft and cuddly. Samurai Cat curled up on my lap and brought a warm smile to my face. Kitamura Kazuki has never been more handsome and masculine looking than when holding a white kitty in one hand and a katana in the other.

Madarame Kyutaro was fired as the Kaga family’s sword instructor and now makes ends meet by creating umbrellas. He faithfully holds out hope for finding a samurai job yet can’t even land an interview. His wife and daughter wait dutifully back home for him. One day, members of the Yonezawa family ask him to murder their rival’s cat. The town has been split in two ever since an incident 30 years ago between the cat loving Aikawa clan and the dog loving Yonezawa clan. Down to his last coins, he accepts the job. When she turns her sparkling green eyes on him, Madara is unable to kill the beautiful white cat and takes her home instead. Before long, the situation explodes and the loner ends up not only playing referee, but giving refuge to a maid who cares for the cat and a young samurai bent on vengeance.

Samurai Cat the drama was one of my first Jdramas. I found it to be thoroughly charming. Though not as strong, once Madara gave in and picked up the kitty, it was hard to begrudge the film anything. This character is my favorite of Kitamura’s. I was pleased he still had his own theme song he sang. “Slash ‘em, slash ‘em, slash ‘em! My mother once told me I was born holding a sword. Invincible, never lose a battle. That’s the only road for Madara...”

The story started out slow and was simplistic and a little silly. I suppose having a cat clan vs a dog clan made as much sense as a lot of other reasons samurai hated each other and wanted to fight. An old wives’ tale stated that white cats brought money and people. This sweet kitty and a gruff ronin actually did combine to bring people together and peace to Edo. So, if you are needing a heartwarming film that can put a smile on your face, Neko Zamurai/Samurai Cat would be a good place to start.

“As a ring of a cat’s collar bell
Tells me that I’m not alone
Going on the trackless path
I am Neko Zamurai.”

Very cutesy

This was a cute short film. The colour grading was bluey, which I really liked. The soundtrack really fit the scenes. The story was very cutesy and simple, fitting for a youth kind of romance film. Overall, it was a nice watch, and I would recommend it to those who enjoy heartwarming and cute films.

yada carried the whole movie....

low budget movie, messy post production, old style humour, weak script… and it honestly feels like everyone is just being themselves with no script, except for yada (and krist later on). i genuinely don’t know how this made it to cinema screening.

the worst part is they didn’t even focus fully on mak and nak’s story. instead, we get too much random, kinda pointless comedic stunts from the crew gang?? like I get it, the gang (especially petchtai) is big in thailand, but still… it just way too much.

i actually feel bad for yada because her acting is way too good for this kind of script. she literally carried the whole movie from start to end. the chemistry between her and krist is more cute than heart-fluttering, but somehow they still made me cry in their scenes, so i’ll give them that.

overall, this movie had so much potential. it would’ve been way better if they just focused on mak and nak’s story, with only a bit of the trio instead of overdoing it. i know they directed and produced it themselves, but honestly… they should’ve chosen a different story to make their gang shine, and not this legendary tale.

Editing was annoying…..

I’m usually not someone who pays too much attention to technical issues, but I have to agree on one thing about this movie, the editing was kind of annoying. At times, it felt like I was watching one of those dramatic Chinese clips that randomly pop up on my Facebook feed.

Other than that, I actually enjoyed the movie… even though I didn’t fully know what was going on at first. I arrived a little late, so I missed the first 5–7 minutes, which probably explains my confusion.

But one thing about Chinese movies, they always have amazing soundtracks. I was the only person in the room, and it honestly felt like they were trying to hypnotize me with those poetic songs… even though I didn’t understand a single word.

The wuxia spaghetti western

A riotously enjoyable mix of wuxia action, fantasy and intrigue, The Magic Blade tweaks otherwise traditionally Chinese cultural elements and gives it the vibe of a spaghetti western. A few dusty tumbleweeds here, a couple of crash-zooms there, all the while a poncho-clad antihero wanders through the film; all that's missing is the Morricone soundtrack. While the narrative beats are more than familiar, it's the way the film transcends them that makes it work so well. Breaking off from the Shaw Brothers formula just enough, offering a little bit of everything for everyone, including a cannibalistic vampire grandma. Rather than following a straightforward revenge or tournament arc, it all unfolds like a labyrinthine whodunit, filled with shifting loyalties, hidden identities and a constant sense that no one is quite what they seem. Director Chor Yuen has really outdone himself here. I love the dimmer lighting style he went with; it really amplifies the darker hues of the colour scheme, embracing a dreamlike aesthetic, which pairs beautifully with its tangled narrative. The action flows wonderfully with a tremendous amount of energy and pace that practically makes so many of his set pieces fly off the screen, especially with a lot of dynamic camerawork in play, yet it still retains those Shaw Brothers stylings, ornate, enigmatic and unapologetically theatrical. The performances all around are great, especially the leading duo of Ti Lung and Lo Lieh, both of whom play off each other brilliantly while also getting ample opportunity to strut their martial arts prowess; Ching Li isn't given much to do as her costars, but she handles it all with grace. Leaden with gothic mysticism and meticulously crafted, The Magic Blade is a truly wonderful piece of swashbuckling adventure, less about straightforward action and more about mood, mystery and an undeniably rich style which it more than delivers in spades.

"In this world, the weak are playthings to the strong"

Third Shadow Warrior showed how man’s desire for carnage and power wasted the lives and resources of the land. Whether a farmer dreaming of being a samurai or a samurai lord desiring to rule everyone, the greed sank deep into the hearts of the sword bearing warriors.

In 1564 the Hida area within the mountains escaped the large armies’ invasion. That didn’t stop smaller forces from desiring to rule the clans. Lord Yasutaka was winning the battles and close to being the ruler supreme of the Hida. A young farmer named Ninomiya Kyonosuke’s dream of being a samurai appears to be answered when Shinomura Saheita comes down from the castle to hire him. Ninomiya discovers he is to be one of Yasutaka’s three doubles, trained to exactly mimic the lord. Whatever troubles befall Yasutaka, befall the three doubles as well.

The message behind the film was strong. Samurai were not to be admired as they were blood-thirsty fighters who only desired more power and wealth never caring about anyone below them in stature or station. Each of the clans betrayed the other in order to move ahead. Betrayals were also rampant within the clans. Despite making strides forward, Ninomiya’s future burned around him with every step. Never clever nor ruthless enough, the farmer fell victim to others with more power. His own greed spelled his doom.

As much as I appreciated the bleak, disturbing story, the unfolding of the revelations felt perfunctory. I called out each disaster before they occurred. While I felt sorry for Ninomiya losing his identity, his impulsive actions also sealed his fate. His was not the sharpest katana in the drawer. The acting for many of the characters was also overly theatrical as if they were on a stage playing to the back row.

Third Shadow Warrior played out the ridiculous degrees of loyalty some samurai were called upon to enact. Not that the nobility and superiors were required to show the same loyalty, more often than not, those ranked below them suffered terrible consequences. Fate was not kind to those who did not understand their place and the sacrifices mandated upon them. Definitely worth a look if you enjoy anti-samurai or Jidaigeki films.

I'm late to the party!

Goodness, the music was excellent in this! I wish Jinu didn't die, but I'm all about the romance, so there you are. There is a terrific message in this film. We need to be careful of the voices that we listen to, especially in this age of influencers and social media. It's easy to think we aren't good enough, aren't thin enough, aren't smart enough, etc. And once those voices get in our heads, it's hard to tune them out.

This movie spoke to the importance of being truthful, no matter how afraid you are. The friendship aspect was really special. They, rightfully, felt betrayed when they found out about her marks, but they became stronger together. It also addressed sacrifice and what one is willing to do for a friend/loved one.

I think that anyone that didn't know about K-Pop would be interested after watching this.

funny and good

The film had some funny scenes, although I think Kang na heul has funnier films. It was still funny. It's an exciting film, even if it doesn't contain any major plot twists. The casting was veryyyy good. The story itself was good to okay, but not so good that I would jump for joy lmao.

Still recommended.

an traumatizing underrated masterpiece.

this movie a bit lesbi vibe. but half of the time it genuinely made me scared and traumatizing.... after watching it 1 time would make your k-movie decision regret. don't watch it while getting because half of the time you will vomit. besides it's not for the weak stomach. and this the real definition why we need feminism in this world. even tho everything is fiction, we need feminism in this world. as a proud feminist, don't watch it if you can't handle cruelty towards woman.... you can literally cry by watching it!!!!!
