Boring

I only watched this because I like a few of the leads. Couldn't finish it.

First, I dislike shows that try too hard to be funny. The "funny" scenes were not. It felt a little bit like slapstick. Not amusing.

Second, the storyline was an endless repeating loop. It got boring quickly.

Most of the acting was good. Unfortunately, they really didn't have much to work with.

My very first korean drama.. ??

My very first Korean drama was My Demon, and after that I got completely addicted to K-dramas — and only made the obsession stronger! 🥰 This drama feels like a perfect blend of fantasy, romance, and irresistible chemistry. As a hopeless romantic, I was totally drawn into the playful yet emotional bond between the leads. Their moments together are swoon-worthy, while the story keeps you engaged with just the right touch of drama and humor. Visually gorgeous and full of heart, My Demon is truly a delightful binge for any K-drama lover like me. ❤️

Good message lost in slow and light story-telling

I had started to watch this drama back when it aired in 2024 but dropped it relatively quickly because I didn't feel that there was much story. I now picked it up again and watched a few minutes here and there -- and once I got into the second half, I even enjoyed the series.

The first six or so episodes tells us how a star and a normal guy get together -- and the second half deals with the consequences. Where the first part is extremely predictable, the latter part had potential to become much more interesting, but it didn't: It still remained mostly light and soft, and because of that, it felt a bit superficial.

I do have to commend the writer for their dedication to their vision: None of the conflicts lasted long, the relationship between the two main characters was extremely stable and notable for their good communication.
Unfortunately, combined with the length of twelve episodes à one hour, that means that the whole thing starts to feel quite slow and even a bit boring. What's more, the incredibly important message gets lost in between the sweetness of the main couple.
Because this drama picks up a topic that I think fans in our modern world should be aware of: How social media blur the lines between the public persona of a celebrity and them as a private person even more. How fans think a celebrity is a commodity they can "play with" instead of a human being with feelings. How celebrities are dependent on their fans' goodwill. How "ships" and the heteronormativity of society impacts celebrities' lives and livelihoods.
And also, for the second couple, the topic of (internalized) transphobia, with a trans woman who, for once, is shown as a human being instead of as a comedy plot point (and she's played by a trans woman too!)

These themes are all there in the plot -- they just could have been used for more emotional impact. Since the main couple's relationship is so stable, the external problems could have made for an exciting contrast: Let the problems spiral for much longer, let the stakes rise higher -- so that the sweetness of the couple has something to balance out. And would that not have made the win in the end much more satisfying?

Alas, the writer had other ideas, and if they don't align with mine, then that's that. However, even so, there are a few aspects that did not help.
For one, the first five or six episodes were too slow in story telling, especially as it's mostly set-up for the actual plot. Also, some scenes don't have any impact for the later story (e.g. when a character repeatedly shows up in the "wrong" clothes for his internship), some scenes just went on slightly too long.
I also don't think the directing was particularly inspired. While most of the actors were showing a slightly-above average for newbies in a Thai BL, they obviously needed more and better directing -- often I found myself thinking "This is too static." or "Why are they just standing around?" More movement, more interesting camera angles, different placements of characters, even more interesting lighting would have helped a lot. As soon as the actors get something to do, their performance becomes much better, and the scenes much livelier and much more engaging.

And as a last point, I need to talk about Krommatha's characterization because that was the one point where the drama dropped the ball. The screenplay tries to tell us that Krommatha and Fueang don't follow the usual heteronormative seme/uke dynamics. They even talk about who will top and who will bottom during sex -- a scene that quite a few viewers loved.
But from the very first minute we meet Krommatha, it's obvious that *he* is the bottom/uke. From his pastel and wide-cut clothing and his softer haircut to his teenaged-girl behaviour when he talks about his crush with his friends, he is the stereotypical BL bottom. Dear writers and producers, if you're not going to commit, don't give me lip-service.
What I did love about Fueang and Krommatha was that the screenplay showed us how much a new couple (both of them, not just the top!) in their honeymoon phase is obsessed with getting it on and generally being all over each other, even if it's just sitting closely together in a more public setting. I missed that in some other soft-and-gentle Thai BLs.

Was it good?
It had a good story to tell, but was hindered by slow story-telling, static scenes and the writer obviously committing to the "soft and light" style instead of tightening the pace and heightening the potential external conflicts.

Did I like it?
Not really. It was okay, but I like its potential more than the actual drama.

Who would I recommend it to?
Maybe to those who want light and "green flag" stories?

Bounded by fate, tested by poisoned love!

Out of all the Secret of Us productions, this stands out for me. This was exactly my type of drama.

This was a story of two wandering souls bound to meet by the death of their father; one was a biological son, Yuewen, the other, Gushan, was adopted. The storyline isn't as simple as it seems. There's more to it than it shows. It involves grief, resentment, attachment and fear of being abandoned.

Characters were simply flawed and beautifully crafted. But as we know, these are very short episodes so they could show very little of everything. But it still has its flaws. Firstly, initially, Gushan's hair and makeup were very poorly done— I turned a blind eye to it. Then it was quite abrupt how they got closer. Which leaves the question that what made Yuewen feel attracted to a person whom he never met in life and suddenly became his brother?
And lastly, I hate hate hate the romanticised smoking scenes.

Still, regardless of everything, it is still my favorite because of how realistically beautiful it was. The chemistry between the leads was instant. The affection, yearning and innocence of each character was intact till the end. The fiancé was supportive, understanding and loveable. There was no way Yuewen could dump her after dating for almost for a decade or so. So practically it was ideal how it ended. And I honestly, I saw it coming. The only thing Gushan understood was that he was abandoned again. There was no way he could be accepted wherever he goes. The decisions in relationships can't be taken impulsivly. So even if it breaks my heart, the outcome was inevitable. His life was painful since the beginning, so end should be peaceful.

Personally, I'm very fond of "not-so-smooth" endings, especially sad ones, because 5 years down the line, even if I forget what happened in the drama, I'll still remember how it ended. It's sadly memorable and weirdly I like it this way.

Rewatch Value is a 10

I just rewatched it for the 4th time and it's still fresh. It's a classic. I don't know if there is a drama that I can rewatch it almost every other year and still find it so fresh and amazing.

They just found the perfect actor for every role here. I don't think there is another actress who can give the innocence and intelligence of the female lead of this drama.

Yes, it's a feel good story. Yes, not every autistic person is going to be like this, and this drama shows it! I think it's ok to have a superhero who can showcase the genius of a autistic person. It reminds me of Justin Hoffman's Rain Man. Both Hoffman and Park Eun-bin show the contrary/endearing human and superhuman quality of autism.

I love that everyone is shown in a good light. Everyone deserves to be loved regardless of his/her handicap.

PERFECT SCORE

A powerful Ode to Nature and Its Defenders (Inspired by True Events)

Context & Real Inspiration

This environmental drama set in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau - the largest and highest plateau in the world, over 4,500 metres above sea level - presents the province of Qinghai’s nearly 30-year journey from "ecological vulnerability to green revitalization," with key moments such as the anti-poaching struggle in the Hoh Xil area and the pilot program of Sanjiangyuan National Park, spanning nearly 30 years since the mid-1990s.

This is an excellent, high-quality production inspired by real events. Today, the area referred to in the drama is the Hoh Xil UNESCO World Heritage site, and later others were added: the Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve and the Three-River Source National Park, also known as Sanjiangyuan National Park, the source of the Yellow, Yangtze, and Lancang (Mekong) Rivers.

Before writing the script (an excellent one, by the way), the creative team interviewed over two hundred mountain patrol staff members and collected 137 true stories. The character of Captain Duojie, played by Hu Ge, is based on two real environmental heroes: the ranger Sonam Dorje – murdered by poachers – who, together with his team, fought to protect the at-the-brink-of-extinction antelope and the landscape of the Tibetan-Qinghai Plateau; and Zhaxi Duojie, who was found dead from a gunshot wound in his home the day after returning from giving an environmental lecture in Beijing.

Execution: From Production to Storytelling

One of the features that makes this drama so powerful is the fact that it was filmed in real locations. The Tibetan Plateau of Qinghai rises over 4,000 metres above sea level. Headaches. Lack of oxygen. Extreme weather. High solar radiation. Drastic temperature swings between day and night. Even simple conversations while walking can become exhausting. I don’t think people who haven’t been above 2,500 metres can truly imagine what it takes to film under those conditions. Kudos to the entire crew, both in front of and behind the camera.

The landscape is not only the setting but also a character, and we’re fully immersed in it together with the Mountain Patrol team, in the overwhelming feeling of roughness, untamed and wild beauty. The cinematography and soundtrack are simply stunning.

The drama avoids the simple approach of becoming a preachy, unrealistic piece or the dry tone of a documentary. Instead, it highlights the complexity of humankind, the clash between environmental protection and development, and our place in the bigger picture of things from the perspective of those ordinary yet also extraordinary people who form the Mountain Patrol Team, as well as their families and friends.

This is an ensemble cast full of characters to remember. Even when their screen time is short, they manage to make an impact. Just as Buddhist beliefs and Tibetan customs are naturally woven into the story, the cast itself reflects that blend, with a mix of Tibetan and Han actors.

Yang Zi as the female lead is overall good, but sometimes a bit lacking in the portrayal of the youngest version of Bai Ju – she always delivers in the emotional scenes, though. This isn’t a big issue, since as the character matures, her performance improves until reaching a solid, even grounded one from the mid-half of the drama onward. If you’ve seen Hu Ge before, you probably won’t recognize him here as the captain of the Mountain Patrol; if this is your first time, you’ll believe he’s been living on the Plateau all his life.

The story and pace remain impeccable from start to finish, with some exceptions around episodes 26 and 29, where the end and the beginning of the two main arcs collide.

The first arc, action-packed, is set in the mid-90s, with the Mountain Patrol fighting against poaching and illegal mining in an impoverished county, while the first controversies between development and environmental protection arise. The simple, stoic, rough, and poetic soul of the mountains flows through every scene and dialogue. This arc, ending at episode 25, is a powerful and unforgettable masterpiece on its own.

The second arc, set 17 years later, remains excellent and solid, leaning more toward an anti-corruption crime thriller that organically grows out of the central theme and events of the first arc, as well as the natural course of development that followed. The sudden change of vibe and setting strikes the viewer with the force and unpredictability of lightning, and it takes a few episodes to adjust to it. Keep watching, because the last ten episodes are gripping in suspense, and the climax and ending are another powerful display of very good writing and directing.

I think this is one of the great achievements of the drama. They took a very high risk with this decision, but the payoff is worth it for two reasons. First, they create another immersive experience where we, the viewers, share the same turmoil and feelings as the characters — it’s more than just understanding what’s happening. Second, the drama avoids depicting a simple, idealistic fight to protect nature and instead shows a more complex and realistic conflict around environmental and development issues.

Final Thoughts

Born to Be Alive, or Tree of Life as the original title in Chinese, is a high-quality show full of meaning and humanity that manages to move the viewer and provoke reflection while also paying a respectful tribute to our nature, the communities deeply rooted in it, and those who dedicate their lives to protecting both. A powerful drama that captures your soul while watching and lingers with you long after it finishes.

A class of her own

This drama broke my prejudice favoring kick-ass women. Props to screenwriter Nan Zhen for surpassing the standard of typical Chinese dramas where women deemed inferior. The female lead Man Man (Song Zu Er) has proven that even if she is not a martial arts prowess, she is as independent as her husband Wei Shao (Liu Yuning), making them equals.

I was captivated on how she was not like the other leading ladies we usually see in Chinese dramas, (who are not physically kung-fu equipped and agile) who whine and latch on and depend on their men. Most of the female leads we have known that lack kung-fu talents, use their wits and brains to pair with their men. BUT they still conformed to the norms, bowed to the families, expressed their jealousies and immaturities- so their men needed to be their heroes.

Our leading lady in this drama is a class of her own.

She was humble towards her husband when needed. But did not allow his clan to push her over even if she was in their lion’s den. Her beauty, role and character put her up in the ranks of Yang Mi, Dilraba, Zhao Lu Si, Zhao Li Ying whom we know par in level with their men.

Just to give you a perspective; Liu Yuning was what made me watch this, so to make me fall and admire Man Man (Song) is a delightful surprise! I compare it to Dylan Wang’s Dafeng; and Tian Xi Wei is pretty herself- but the whining, dependence and deception just made me drop it. Following this Prisoner of Beauty drama I watched Female General- and it only made me love this series all the more.

Thank you Nan Zhen for making us prisoners of Man Man’s beauty.

Only here for the ML

Not sure how I came across this other than seeing that Cao Tian Kai was in it - so I decided to watch it. It's really the only reason to watch it.

What I liked:
Obviously, the ML - really could just about watch him in anything.

Story was just so-so - although the early part where he takes care of her when she is blind was very sweet and I do wish we saw him in more of this mode instead of the super-aggressive mode that plays way too often.

What I didnt like:
FL character - she was just too mousy and a doormat too much of the time. And totally didnt get why she was so afraid of the grandfather - not even her grandfather - jeebus girl! Another FL that I just didnt get what so appealing about her.
Speaking of - so disliked him - the typical, old-school mindset - especially when he whips the ML (this whole idea of 'family rules' and capital punishment is just absurd) - its 2026 ffs, not an old dynasty era. Its a grown adult metting out capitol punishment because they have anger-management issues - its just gross But what pissed me off the most was him constantly taking the FL's autonomy away - making decisions for her, never listening to her, didnt care what she wanted (now granted, she never stands up for herself, so it doesnt help).
Romance scenes weren't all that great - mostly because he was too aggressive, a bunch of coercion and basically manipulates her early by lying to her about who he is to get her to sleep with him. How the writers try to make this romantic is beyond me.

soft and warm

I don’t like sports shows so I was putting this one off for a while. I started itnout of boredom today and binged it in one day lol
i just loved the dynamic. i loved sml and his quiet understanding of the 2 ml. i loved the support they got from him and later the chrley hair friend lol
i agree with most reviews that they definitely deserve a spin off. i want them to fall deep into love with each other.
i do not agree with people saying it was boring and slow and no romance until the last episode.
this was a coming out story. this was the first love of a young men who never really got to feel that way or had the time to explore his own feelings or sexuality. he was everyones child in the nation. there was no time or opportunity to find himself. then this experienced man comes along and shatters his quiet life. challenges him. helps him and understands him. even the mentioning of abuse for just a minute makes sense if you think about it. he doesn’t want him to feel hurt again if he mentions it. so he leaves it by that and waits. that is his strength and brings so much to this relationship. he cares and he loves unconditionally once he made up his mind.
the slow pace was adequate. the intimate scenes were emotional and esthetic. it was beautifully made.
all together it was a sweet and beautiful drama that deserved a higher rating. i wish it was longer. i wish we could have followed their paths. but unfortunately it’s just a show

Best Wuxia movie I've watched this year!

Idk what the reviewers are talking about. I got hooked by this movie because of trailers. Hollywood made a ton of shitty trailers, DONT FOLLOW THEM! Anyhoo, I admit the martial arts in this movie were a bit flashy, ppl flying off a horse, lots of jumping and flying kick...... BUT THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD. The cinematic fight scenes did help to make you glued to the screen. While they make the plot so simple : guarding an important figure to chang'an but giving the backstory of the MC and his enemies. Also HOW IS NIC TSE STILL LOOK THE SAME LIKE 20 YEARS AGO? HE'S 52! costume wise, it's in a desert, so the tone is earthy colour. There's one scene remind me of Mad Max lol. Overall if you're looking for a wuxia movie, you can try this one.
