Great ACTING - "A Cavalcade of Stars" as they would say in the 30s
This is a very decent drama, very pretty, and a commercial for the tea industry and the history of China's tea culture (watch after the credits). Some company or government office paid the movie producers very well for this.I came to see Neo Hou and he was pretty good and beyond handsome, as always. I love watching him act, no matter what he is in. To be honest, he has such STAR power that I am always watching Neo Hou, not the actual character. It's kind of like watching Arnold Schwarzenegger or Bruce Willis: no matter their role, I am watching the STAR.
Actors
I've seen Neo Hou be more emotive, but his character and the FL's character didn't really allow it much. He was sweetest at the beginning, when he was trying to connect with the FL. I especially LOVED seeing some of my favorite short drama stars in this, such as Liu Qing and Li Fei, who are more handsome here than ever and great actors, even more so than usual. You really got to see them ACT. I hope they stay in these longer dramas, as I think that they will have better support and opportunities here than in the "seat of your pants" short dramas with no resources. Also loved my fav pretty guy, Zhao Yi Qin, who lost so much weight for this role that I am nervous about his health. He did an excellent job all around. All the secondary actors and actresses did a GREAT job. Loved Chen Ruo Xuan, who has put in his time in comedies as the CEO's assistant. He is also a great actor here; we saw his wounded soul.
Really, everyone's acting was superb, such as Leanne Liu as the Grandmother. But I want to give a SPECIAL shout out to Cao Jun, whom I haven't noticed before. First, he is beyond handsome. More important, he was extraordinary in portraying a man at the breaking point, both physically and emotionally. He was the most sympathetic character in the entire show, and you just wanted to weep for him. He should definitely be proud of his work here and I hope to see more of him.
In that same point in the show, Sophia Hu's work as Lady Chang can't be overlooked. Talk about emotional honesty.
*****I really feel that this show was all about actors being given a chance to show their skills. They really drove the entire drama, almost like an actor's showcase, with the ML and FL just being the hosts of the show.
Story
The story was well done, with four or five "situations" that moved it along in sequence. One thing I didn't like about the story is that the people would do terrible things to each other and then "make up" with each other as the situation changed. I don't believe that this is how society works, at least not in the US. When a person does terrible things to you, you don't eventually become besties or lovers. Sorry. This forgiveness of evil was woven throughout the show and I don't get it. It really bothered me especially in the last two episodes when someone did terrible things to get their way and it was considered "what a person does to survive." Hey, it wasn't war time, no one was in a concentration camp starving. These were just evil choices, but we all smile and wish each other well at the end? Didn't like it. I also didn't like another aspect of the story, as I mention below.
Love Story POSSIBLE SPOILER
As in most of these big budget C-dramas, I shouldn't have expected any sexy romance. It was even more lacking in this one, since the FL was supposed to be strong as iron and smart as a whip and the ML was supposed to be scheming and out for revenge. I do see how they connected and the attraction and admiration they have for each other (even though other viewers didn't (Hint: they are both the same type of person)), BUT to NEVER come to a point in the relationship where the FL is HONEST with the ML and fully sharing and communicating with him is out-and-out terrible. What kind of romance is this? All manipulation and no point in which they are ONE in thinking and DOING. Even up to the very end? This is a quite terrible idea and should have been changed by someone in charge. I really couldn't support the couple, as she remained aloof and following her own plans the ENTIRE time, and hurt the ML quite badly on more than one occasion. It was only through tremendous force of will that it all worked out. (Is this the new framework for romance? Man allows the woman to repeatedly "kick" him and still goes on loving her? If so, I've really been on the short end my entire life. I should have had that opportunity, too!)
Bottom line, enjoy seeing the actors and the acting and forget the romance being romantic (even with the secondary romances).

Chaotically Messy but Weirdly Real
Perhaps Love was one of those movies I discovered through a random short clip that instantly made me curious. It looked fun, awkward, and chaotic and thankfully, thatâs exactly what it delivered. The comedy here isnât the loud slapstick type. Itâs more awkward, situational, and rooted in how messy human relationships can get, which honestly made it even funnier for me.What surprised me is that beneath all the chaos, thereâs actual depth and emotion tucked into the story. The relationships and situations are so oddly intertwined that I kept thinking, âëë° ë§ë ìëŒâ because what are the chances of all these connections happening? But at the same time⊠life really does get absurd like that sometimes. That mix of ridiculousness and realism somehow works in the movieâs favor.
Itâs not my usual kind of film, but I genuinely enjoyed it until the end. I kept bracing myself for what insane or emotional thing would happen next, and that unpredictability made the whole ride entertaining. Messy, strange, emotional, and unexpectedly relatable in its own bizarre way.

My Favorite Drama - & here's why...
Just to be clear, this contains spoilers; so it's more for discussion rather than a recommendation - Although I do recommend it.This was my second Asian drama series ever watched and having now watched about 70, I recognise it has unfortunately set a high bar.
The acting is good if a little wooden at times, but I think that is more due to the dialogue scenes being set up like a stage play. (Probably while standing on a bridge.) I think Jung So-min and Lee Jae-wook have great chemistry that builds authentically over the 20 episodes making the payoff in episode 20 so SO GOOD. The supporting cast really sold their roles too. Lot's of different personality types portrayed really well. I hated Jin Mu just the right amount; was wary but hopeful of the crown prince just the right amount; Cheerful with Park Dang Gu just the right amount; Intrigued by Seo Yul just the right amount. Really well cast.
Also a nod to the English dubbing. These days i find most dubbing awful and watch with subtitles but I thought these guys sold it.
The OST is amazing. I listen to it all the time. My only complaint is I can't find on Spotify, a version of Scars Leave Beautiful Trace that has the slightly off-beat metal ringing that's in the actual show. I'll keep looking.
World building: The incorporation of Korean history with fantasy elements to create the setting is really amazing. the personal and power interaction between elemental energy and divine powers is very cool. The background strife, drought and relics give the writers plenty of tools to help flesh out the story.
Story: The ML & FL have their mutual problems (Mu Deok a once powerful mage has lost her energy. Jang Uk has incredible potential but has no one will unblock his gate of energy.) They by chance meet and decide to help one another within a disguised symbiotic relationship. Their backgrounds inform their actions; Naksu / Mu Deok is ruthless and calculating and Jang Uk is clever, privileged but also somewhat naive. Their joint mission is to train Jang Uk up so he can transfer his power back to Mu Deok. They always move forward, with Mu Deok throwing Jang Uk into danger again and again and him 'failing-forward' to the best of his ability. This culminates in episode 18 where for reasons, they both decide to give away all their hard won achievements, leaving them only with each other and a new shared fate as husband & wife. I love the part in ep 19 where Jang Uk has to tell his 'mother' Maidservant Kim that who he's marrying. Classic.
Now; the crux of why I really like the show and - in hindsight - why I like it better than other k Dramas:
Both are resolute in their commitment to their cause and to each other. As their relationship evolves from one of convenience to one of dependence and then love, their honesty and commitment to each other never wavers (Except for the part with Kil Joo but that is a great relationship development moment for them both.)
I love it how they are both open and honest with each other,
Mu Deok Casually, "Yeah I stole and tried to sell the spirit plaque" Jang Uk just accepts it without comment even though he had been beaten severely for loosing it;
Mu Deok to Seo Yul, "I stole Jang Uk's money to go drinking and buy nice things. Do you want to come in?" leaving him dumbfounded.
Jang Uk always being forthright with his feeling towards Mu Deok, "I missed you too."
Step by step, the pragmatism and devotion of their relationship leaves no cracks for others. Even Seo Yul who has significant leverage has a tough time.
Seo Yul: "I like pine pollen tea snacks"
Shop Keeper to Mu Deok, "Would you like some?"
Mu Deok: "No." (Boom, shut down.)
Heo Yoon Ok to Jang Uk: "I made you a hangover cure, would you like..." *Jang uk has already turned and walked 20 feet away.*
One of my favorite parts (ep 10) is when Jang Uk finally gets into Songrim and they belatedly realise that it's separated them. All goals are put on hold and independently, both of them hyper-focus on getting back together again. It's really fun to watch.
It's also fun to see the friend circle evolve and recognise Mu Deok's special status as more than just Jang Uk's servant and they start to include her more as their own friend. An important evolution which has an impact in episode 20. (SO GOOD.) This is often recognised by other characters as, "Mu Deok, the servant that's always by his side."
So unlike a lot of dramas where the ML & FL constantly bounce off each other to unconvincingly end up together in the finale, Alchemy of Souls shows their relationship evolving and strengthening from within. All the drama is them leaning on each other to fight external conflicts together. I like this framework best.
Confession: I've literally watched this show - without exaggeration - ten billion times; and I still love it.

Iâm genuinely surprised by how deeply this drama moved me. What I expected to be a simple novel adaptation became something far more tender, reflective, and beautifully made. It proves that short dramas can still carry the emotional weight of a full novel or film when created with care. And yes, I've seen other reviews and as the storyline may be little unrealistic and cliche, but the heart of the story is not in the setup. It is in the truth of its emotions. If you strip away the labels, what remains is a story about two people learning how to love each other gently, respectfully, and with patience. In a time where many romances confuse love with urgency, lust, or spectacle, this series reminds us that love can also be quiet. It can be shown through consistency, consideration, and the soft accumulation of small acts. These were what stopped me from fast forwarding episodes or watching at x1.5 speed (which I often almost always do NGL).
IMO the slow burn was one of its greatest strengths. Some may find it too slow? but real love rarely blooms overnight. Attraction may be instant, but intimacy is built through time, trust, and shared moments. This series understands that, so every emotional step feels earned.
Also similar to many other reviews have touched on, I so agree that what elevated it further was the production itself. The cinematography was elegant, the pacing precise, and every scene felt intentional. There were no unnecessary villains, no hollow drama, no wasted characters. Even side characters served a purpose, helping us understand family wounds, emotional patterns, and what healthy love can look like in contrast. The writing was restrained and intelligent, never overly cheesy, never trying too hard. The Mandarin dialogue in particular felt poetic, which made the experience even richer.
What touched me most was how real the emotions felt. Some scenes made me cry, others made me giggle along with them. There was something so raw and sincere in their tenderness that it made me reflect on my own life, my own understanding of love, and the ways people care for one another.
This series is not just about romance, it is about being human: as lovers, as children, as family. I honestly wasnât expecting this level of artistry from a vertical drama, but it became one of those rare stories that lingers after it ends.
My only dissatisfaction: I wanted more of the elder sisterâs love story!!! Season 2, maybe?

Started off great but then became flat with common plot, bland acting and lack of chemistry
I was preparing a reddit post about vertical drama actresses aged 35 and above and came across Shu Chang. I decided to watch this drama because it stars Ma Qian Huan & Han Jia Hui too. I am familiar with revenge historical drama with concubine setting and this offered nothing new. What I liked:
1. Han Jia Hui - It was great to see her playing a villain even though it was a supporting role. Even though food poisoning scene supposed to be a serious scene, HJH made it funny.
2. Opening scene - A great scene that establish the villain & FL's vengeance arc.
3. Styling - Loved the outfits worn by the cast.
4. Supporting characters - I liked Yao Yao & the Eunuch.
5. Revenge - I liked that FL's plan to bring down the villain included punishing her accomplices and manipulating ML.
What I disliked:
1. Acting - Shu Chang was the main reason I watched this drama but her performance here was flat. She didn't convey much expressions. There was also no chemistry between her and Ma Qian Huan.
2. Romance - Due to the lack of chemistry, I didn't buy the attraction between FL & ML.
3. Antagonists - Han Jia Hui's character was evil as she killed innocent people. Gu Shi Xian was horrible too.
Favourite scene

Erika Toda Eats Worms and Builds an Empire in Straight to Hell
This show is unwell, and I mean that as a compliment. This show looked at stability, peace, emotional balance, and said no thanks, weâre going to follow one woman who eats worms and then builds a media empire out of pure spite. And at the center of this chaos tornado is Erika Toda, who is out here playing Kazuko Hosoki from 17 to 66 like she signed a contract with God and refused to lose. Five decades, five personalities, zero weakness. It is honestly offensive how good she is. I felt judged watching her. Like girl, relax, some of us are barely playing one version of ourselves correctly.
We start in 2005. Kazuko is rich, famous, dripping in power, and surrounded by rumors like flies on expensive fruit. Fraud, yakuza, sketchy vibes. The kind of success where people smile at you and then immediately Google âis she a criminal.â So she decides to tell her life story to this struggling writer Minori, played by Sairi Ito. And you think oh, nice, healing moment. No. This is not healing. This is PR with trauma seasoning.
Then the show punches you in the throat with her childhood. Post-war Japan said âgood luckâ and left her to starve. This woman ate an earthworm to survive. An earthworm! I complain when my food delivery is ten minutes late, and she is out here doing Fear Factor just to stay alive. That kind of origin story does not give you soft eyes and a gentle heart, that gives you laser focus and trust issues so deep they need their own postal code.
By 17 she is lying about her age and working as a hostess, climbing fast because she can read men like cheap subtitles. Of course some trash boss tries to ruin her. Of course. Men stay predictable. But instead of collapsing, she goes full villain origin. She learns one rule and carves it into her soul. Never depend on anyone. Not your boss. Not your man. Not your horoscope. Nobody.
So what does she do? Opens her own nightclub in Ginza. Like a psychopath. Brings her younger brother along. Builds it into a success because apparently survival was just her warm-up round. Meanwhile her love life is a flaming garbage fire. Rich men proposing, promises flying, stability nowhere to be found. And then she gets involved with the underworld because why not add organized crime to the emotional damage cocktail.| Toma Ikuta shows up as a yakuza boss boyfriend and you just sit there thinking yes, this tracks, nothing about this woman screams âsafe choices.â
Every time life hits her, she does not break. She upgrades. Betrayal? New skill unlocked. Failure? Character expansion pack. So when she becomes a fortune teller, it feels obvious. Of course she can predict people. She has been reverse-engineering human behavior since she was eating worms in a ditch.
And the show looks amazing while all this insanity is happening. The wardrobe evolves like a glow-up montage on steroids. The makeup ages her so well it is almost disrespectful. And somehow Erika Toda is still dominating scenes she is not even in. That is witchcraft. I am convinced.
The supporting cast is great but they know they are living in her world. Toko Miura brings emotional depth as Chiyoko Shimakura, but nobody is hijacking this train. This is Kazukoâs rollercoaster and everyone else is just strapped in, screaming.
The timeline keeps flipping between past and present, and you start realizing something important. Kazukoâs version of events are suspiciously polished. Meanwhile Minori is digging around like âhmm, this smells like selective memory.â So now it is not just a life story. It is a psychological chess match about who controls the narrative.
Kazuko is not a good person in the clean, Instagram-quote way. She is ruthless, messy, morally chaotic. A walking red flag with perfect lipstick. And yet you cannot look away. Because Erika Toda does not ask you to like her, but dares you to understand her.
Take her out and this show collapses instantly. Leave her in and it feels like you are watching someone set fire to the world and then sell tickets to the show.

Playing with the audience's emotions for commercial gain, without even providing a logical reason.
The ending lacks weight and conviction, which robs it of its charm. Why did the male lead's master save the female lead only to keep it a secret? Why did they have to wait 12 years to reunite? After watching 40 episodes, ending with them just staring at each other after 12 years apartâwhere is the emotional impact in that?If it's an action drama, the purpose of the fight should be clear. It shouldn't just be stated in words, but felt through the characters' emotions and actions. Otherwise, don't bother fighting; just go play extreme sports instead.

Hella Drama and I ATE it upppp
So fun!! I honestly had a great time watching this drama, even though it is as messy as everyone says lol. I literally had to write out a relationship chart/ diagram for my friend who was watching it with me so she could follow what was happening.I think I need to go back and rewatch some more FirstKhao dramas because this drama gave me a whole new appreciation for their pairing. I wish they went more into Ray's history and everything with his mom a little more, his character had a lot of depth and development which I loved I just think e could understand a little more of his hesitation with Sand and his addictions more if we knew a little more about him. Even 1 flashback scene with his mom would've sufficed.
ForceBook has some undeniable chemistry, I am already a fan of them so I was excited to watch them in another drama and they nailed it like always. I was honestly expecting Top to be a little more red flag than he was, I thought it was cute that he became more green flag the more he fell for Mew but I just wanted more drama and I love red flag Force so I wish he was more toxic through the whole series... Regardless I loved their development as a couple, their relationship really felt real/ natural. I liked how Mew didn't give in and forgive Top so easily, he had to actually work for it and prove he had changed so that was nice.
Now lets get this out of the way first, I LOVE Neo and so I was more lenient wit Boston in this series than I probably should have been. Neo was a hot mess and I looooved the drama he brought lol, I was eating it up every episode. I also LOVE Mark so seeing him get hurt time and time again by Neo was a hard watch for me personally. I did love their pairing a lot, if Boston could get his act together than they would actually make a really good couple. They were so cute and I loved the short amount of moments we got of them as a couple, but it was right for Nick to choose himself in the end and for them to part ways.
All in all I loved the cast and I think each actor portrayed their character really well, the storyline was juicy but very rushed at the end. I felt like they were just throwing things at us in the last episode that were unnecessary but I still really enjoyed this. I am excited to watch Dream On now and maybe see Boston get a redemption arc???

Reborn with misunderstanding
Some dramas entertain you for a moment, and some quietly stay with you after the last episode ends. Threads of Destiny is one of those dramas for me.At first glance, it looks like another rebirth-and-marriage C-drama: two sisters, a swapped marriage, household schemes, jealous rivals, and a husband who seems careless on the surface. But what makes this story stand out is how much heart it carries beneath all the palace-style politics.
The story follows Jiang Xueying, played by Zhu Lilan, the eldest daughter of the Jiang family, who is reborn along with her younger sister Jiang Yuâer. Instead of repeating her old mistakes, she changes her fate by switching marriages and stepping into a dangerous world filled with manipulation, hidden enemies, and survival games inside the household. ()
What I loved most was that Jiang Xueying was not written as a loud, reckless heroine. She was patient, intelligent, and strategic. She fought with her mind, not just her emotions. Watching her slowly reshape her destiny felt satisfying instead of rushed.
Qin Tianyu as Lu Junxing brought surprising depth to the male lead. He starts off looking like the typical spoiled heir, but his growth felt natural. Their relationship didnât rely on cheap misunderstandings for too longâit gradually became a true partnership, and that made the romance far more rewarding.
What really gave this drama weight, though, was the darker side stories. The women around themâespecially characters like Su Wanrong, Liu Rumei, and Lin Yuejianâshowed how cruel the feudal system could be. Their tragedies reminded us that not every woman in these stories gets a second chance. Some are simply crushed by the world they were born into. That part made the ending bittersweet instead of simply âhappy ever after.â ()
At only 26 episodes, the pacing felt sharp and didnât drag, which is rare for many revenge-and-rebirth dramas. Yes, there were melodramatic moments, but they served the emotional tension instead of ruining it. Itâs a short drama, but it feels fuller than many longer productions. ()
For me, Threads of Destiny is not just about romanceâit is about survival,

Messy revenge but the kisses were hot & brothers were handsome
This drama was reuploaded on one of the YouTube channels that I follow and I got curious. The leads were unfamiliar to me and since ML called FL jiejie, I decided to continue watching. The drama has confusing plot but overall I liked it.What I liked:
1. Acting - I must say Zhang Shuo Hang was captivating on screen. He brought a little crazy in his character but not a red flag. He and Chu Qian Yue had excellent chemistry. I also enjoyed the performance by Yang Cheng Yan, the actor who portrayed Ye Hai.
2. Romance - High sexual tension with good push & pull dynamics. The kisses were hot. The playful banter at the end was so sweet.
3. Visuals - I appreciated the beautiful faces of Zhang Shuo Yang and Yang Cheng Yan. Zhang Shuo Hang had slight resemblance to kpop idol Taeyong of NCT. Chu Qian Yue kinda look similar to Zhao Xi Xi.
4. Ending - That last scene after the epilogue was random & confusing but I liked it a lot.
5. ML characterisation - I liked his coquettish behaviour. Sly like a fox.
What I disliked:
1. Revenge - The revenge plan was messy. She was angry with her ex husband for cheating on her and criticising her dead parents. To investigate her parents' death, she propositioned young CEO who turned out to be ML's half brother. I expected FL to investigate but the drama was more focused on the love triangle.
2. Styling - The outfits worn by FL were unflattering. Very retro, grandma style.
3. Antagonists - FL's ex husband & his mistress were terrible. ML's father was horrible too.

Watch for the hard work of cast, itâs enjoyable enough.
Whatever your expectations are to want to start this whether it be for the veteran cast, or the romance aspect of mid aged leads, or the hotel industry, thatâs all here packed. Starting out with a clear picture of what happened to Mi Yu, the female protagonist, youâre drawn in to her story, her life. From there, layered is her rise from her lifeâs pit, in the hotel industry. Nothing too extraordinary about the story that is pretty predictable if youâve watched a lot of cdramas of heroines rise from the ashes. So whatâs to like? The mirror of life through Mi Yuâs. Simple as that. It isnât written perfectly if youâre opinionated, and I humbly say that not from expertise but having lived long with some good recognition of good flows. However, it is not for the worst from hundreds others. In fact, itâs not bad at all if youâre here for a flowing story with many layers of humanity whether personal or in the career field. Go for it, itâs entertaining, and the cast deserves recognition of their work bringing entertainment to your screen. Iâm almost done with it and itâs been a good look forward daily.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Update: finished last thoughts. TIL the end it was satisfying. Everything worked out perfectly for the heroine even if a bit too cheesy or coincidental. Thatâs good. Itâs nice to see happy endings because thereâs way too much sadness all around the world. Worth the watch.

Better than the rating suggests
I donât know whatâs with all the negative reviews on here but this is a great little drama. Seems people are mad itâs not the neat and tidy romance they wanted, but it never claims to be. A solid story about a toxic relationship between very human characters with a fitting ending, and the actors have great chemistry (physical and emotional). If you donât require cookie cutter happy endings in your dramas I recommend it.Was this review helpful to you?
Best crime suspense drama of this year
All the actors have done their job professionally. All the actors acting is top notch,They haven't overly exaggerated the plot.Every episode are short, compact and full of creative events. In most of the drama, where main character are either given light sentence, forgiven ,this drama has shown the true meaning of justice,If you are right you deserve praise if you are wrong you deserve punishment even the harsh one,The major problem I found with cdramas is for fulfilling episodes number they just add annoying supporting characters or agencies force more screentime to the support character just to promote them which make the story deflecting and boring where the skip button is used but in this drama there is no such things,Truly the most underrated cdrama right now,MDL rating has become a joke đ€Ł where people come to pour their jealousy or envy,Nowadays you cannot judge a drama only based on ratings.I recommend everyone to watch this drama and judge for themselves.Dont believe this MDL rating,it was just envious peoples doing. Some childish fans downrate the drama just because they cannot digest other actors success, performance and just because it is of another genre not romance genre.

John Wick meet K Wick
I put this on the back burner for a long time because I wasn't sold on the synopsis. If only someone said "John Wick meet K Wick" then I'll know exactly what I'm in for because this is just action packed with great fight choreography and a gritty dead inside character who is just going on a revenge spree.
Story is basic and I can't give this full points only because John Wick does world building out of the one dimensional characters but this is not world building. The characters are all one dimensional which is fine because the focus is on revenge and slicing people up.
There's no cute girls which is great like if they threw in a idol girl that just changes the dynamic of the series. In fact there are no girls because this is a series for men of men.
Acting is one dimensional like I only disliked the out of character moment where no spoiling but he isn't just dead inside with compassion but he ended up doing a bit too much in one conversation which I felt was unnecessary.
I also felt like the actors that supported the lead whether fighting him or just entangled didn't show any genuine fear. The show would have been amplified if they made him a demon like hearing his name sends chills and the new generation would witness this throughout the development of the series and ends with them cowering in fear. That's kind of what is missing because it felt like all this destruction and yet you aren't afraid of a monster hunting you? ... at least I wasn't sold on the acting because their fear felt bland.
Otherwise I was in it for the violence, the gritty-nature and fast paced story telling of revenge.
What's more impressive is some shows tend to make what I consider should be easy fights into hard fights. In this show I was surprised at just seeing him kick ass but it would have been better if he simply didn't get hurt as much because it should be like One Punch Man or Mashle just overpowered which explains why he became a legend in the gangs.
The ending felt good too which I like.
I actually hope there's a season 2 just exploring how this guy became a legend and feared among the gangs but then they'd have to make him look way younger.
