Messy but Oh-So-Entertaining β€” A Must-Watch!

There are only a few historical dramas I’ve actually enjoyed, and this one made the list! πŸŽ‰ The plot can feel a little messy here and there, but when it hits, it really HITS. Green Tea scheming? βœ… Revenge? βœ… Satisfying drama moments? Double βœ….

That said, I wish they didn’t completely forget about her scriptwriter self (like hello?? I wanted closure on that!). But overall, it was such a fun ride that I’m giving it a solid 9/10 on my vertical drama scale. Totally recommend if you’re in the mood for some juicy drama goodness! πŸ’•

Standing Ovation

First and foremost, I have to state my utmost respect to Mile and Apo. They leveraged their clout, brand, and fan base to not only bring a stellar work to fruition, but to hand over the spotlight to other actors and cast themselves as supporting characters. The humility and commitment to their acting community, authentic and damn good storytelling, and the audience's experience should be loudly noted. This type of generosity should be resoundingly applauded and acknowledged.

This should not be billed as a BL- not because it is lacking in BL romance and spice (oh, it brings it all) but because the representation of gay and bisexual love is incidental representation- gay and bisexual humans have existed throughout history, lived that history, and had to find ways to love and survive in that history. The history and the lived experience is what SHINES in this production. The human experience- gay, straight, and bi, young, old... human- is represented beautifully.

The storytelling does not paint villains and heroes easily. Instead, it leans into the moral ambiguity that often exists when fighting for what you believe. Living the consequences of your choices is a major theme to the piece, and instead of moralizing by assigning "happy endings" or "just desserts" to characters, the storytelling firmly takes the position that making the choice is what is important; to do nothing, to not choose, is the greatest sin we commit. This is a thematic statement that feels incredibly poignant to me as an American at this time and place in my nation's history.

The acting and delivery is truly next level, the production values are top notch including the sound engineering (a particular pet peeve of mine with regards to many Thai productions), and no budget was spared in recreating this indelible moment in Thai history. The script, directing, and execution are award-winning worthy.

Early in its run (as episodes were dropping) a great deal of negative reaction was popping up on social media. For some, I think they were expecting a redux of the Kinn Porsche aesthetic and storytelling. For others, I think they expected to be spoon fed important histocultural details that makes the viewing experience a little easier. It doesn't take much time to hop on Google and get some context to this period in Thai history so you can understand the sociopolitical implications as you watch. If we are going to embrace the art of a culture, don't we have a little bit of an obligation to do our homework and meet the storytelling halfway when we are lacking prior knowledge to enhance our understanding? I firmly believe the answer to that question is, "yes." For every 20 BLs that require no effort on the part of the international audience in order to understand and enjoy, you will find that beautiful treasure- like Shine- that requires a little more effort to participate. Take five minutes to gather some prior knowledge as it will truly make this viewing experience better.

I will rewatch this someday. But for now, I just want to sit with it in my heart and in my brain and give myself some time with it before I rewatch.

Review while I watch

Episode 4 - No chemistry between the male / female lead , what are the FL motivations to pursue this guy? She seems selfish without any redeeming qualities and she pursues him when she knows nothing about him. FL is a stalker, a bully, rude and immature (SHE PEEKED INTO THIS GUYS BATHROOM TO WATCH HIM SHOWER WTH). ML is boring ( we haven't really seen much of his personality, yeah sure he has abs and he is successful ... Why are all characters caricatures of drama archetypes with no complexity at all.

My pet peeve but I hate that during the "travel through dimensions" trope their main concern is so trivial , like you do not want to figure out a way to go back ??? ok ? if she wrote the book she could also gain so much power, but she does nothing.

Honestly I am close to dropping it , but the reviews give me hope that it might get better, I'll give it another chance

Episode 6 - No progression , FL has not redeemed herself at all, she is still whiny and annoying also why is Chen Qing giving her the time of day ? He is treating her a million times better from the 1st occasion they met ... and she wouldn't even consider him as a prospect, I hope thats where the story is heading ? Cause what's this obsession with Situ Ao Ran it really makes no sense

Episode 8 - 9 - I want to hit my head on a wall ... whats with the end of ep9 if suddenly this ML gets jealous because she played housewife with him for 3 days .... are these ppl 15 ?

Ep. 10 why isn't FL treating at least ML better ? If she stoped shouting and being combative ... but it doesn't matter ML kissed her out of nowhere ... ??? huh

Ep. 12 BOOORING no chemistry at this point I have given up and I am just fast forwarding

Ep. 13 What's even the connection between book world and real world , it seems like two completely separate stories ???

Ep.15-16 the tonal change was so abrupt

Ep. 17-18 it makes no sense that the book ML has a connection with real life ML

Ep 20 ... finally free of this god as* awful drama

From Interesting to Borefest

'Light Shop' started out as a remarkably interesting drama that had a somewhat unique premise and storyline that was captivating and easily kept the viewer guessing the next move or next twist and turn of the story. This feeling of excitement however only lasted three or perhaps four episodes. From this point onwards, this became a borefest. I don't know how suddenly it became like this, whether it was because of the odd pacing or weird dialogue at points or whether it's because all of my questions about the story became answered, but it's a real shame because the first three episodes in particular were so amazing that at one point I was thinking maybe this would be a 10/10 drama.

Some positives would be the cast and their performances. Yes, whilst the story (quality wise) was on a downward trend, I did appreciate the hard work by the actors and actresses. I really enjoyed the depth of the different characters, they all felt full of life and were all different from one another.

I guess the feeling I have right now is disappointment, because it started out so amazing and by the end of the drama it was even hard just to try and focus on the story and pretend I cared.

The never-ending case: Who is Squid?

If you are reading this, just know, you have probably been here before. Or at least, that is a possibility in the world of Mobius. The average person might only have 24 hours in a day, but not Ding Qi. After a near-death experience, he obtains the ability to relive a random day on a loop, with the day resetting five times before time resumes chronologically. This gives Ding Qi an unique advantage, making him exceptionally qualified for his job as a detective. When the executives at the biotechnology company MOMA starts getting murdered one by one, Ding Qi is tasked with protecting the life of Mo Yuanzhi, the founder of the company, and uncovering the identity and motives of the killer, Squid. With the power of time-loops on his side, he expected to be two steps ahead of Squid... until he realizes that there might be another time-loop perceiver manipulating the outcome of this case.

I'm going to be honest β€” it feels like I have also lived through more than five long and exhausting loops after watching Mobius. One thing I've always appreciated about western crime thrillers is their use of an episodic format that features a main conflict alongside smaller and often related subplots. This familiar formula reliably prevents a show from losing momentum, keeping individual episodes fresh and engaging. I had hoped that Mobius would follow a similar pattern, but unfortunately, it did not. The writers' decision to focus solely on the MOMA case, without sprinkling in any smaller cases, sacrificed the story's momentum. It doesn't help that time-loop stories are also inherently repetitive, making the narrative feel even more drawn-out. While I found the drama watchable, the drastically slowed pacing made it difficult for me to give it my undivided attention.

The sluggish pacing wasn't the only issue; the connection between Ding Qi and An Lan was also surprisingly weak. In my opinion, these two characters function better as friends than as love interests, as they have no romantic chemistry at all. They are attracted to each other, because the writers want us to believe they are, but little else is established. Aside from their looks, why do they like each other? If we were to remove the topics of An Lan's mother and her work, would these two characters even have anything to talk about? Beyond their initial attraction, their relationship lacks any deeper foundation. While I don't expect the romance to be central to a crime drama's plot, Ding Qi and An Lan's love arc feels forced and inorganic. This left me uninvested in their storyline.

In contrast, I actually really liked the dynamics within Ding Qi's team, specifically his relationship with Duan Zheng. They make an endearing duo. Duan Zheng serves as a mix of mentor, friend, and father figure to Ding Qi. His character balances a playful nature with the wisdom of a seasoned detective, and his genuine care for the people he serves makes it easy to understand why Ding Qi looks up to him so fondly. We see this affection in scenes where Duan Zheng teasingly scolds Ding Qi for his reckless actions, but then immediately follows up with a look of genuine concern. Similarly, when Ding Qi is overwhelmed by the high-stakes of the MOMA case, Duan Zheng offers him grounded advice and unwavering support that reminds him of his purpose beyond the confusing time-loops. These small moments established a strong foundation of trust, a welcomed foil to the more superficial relationships in the story, and their scenes were a highlight for me.

Another aspect that pulled me into the world of Mobius was its outstanding cinematography. The director has a keen eye for interesting shots, beautifully capturing the urban cityscape of this fictional world, which is perfectly fitting for an action-packed crime thriller involving advanced technology and time-loops. The camera work is constantly in motion, with frequent long drone shots that glide through the streets, following Ding Qi as he races across the city to investigate the secrets of MOMA and their ties to Squid. These shots create a sense of continuous motion and urgency, even when the plot is moving slowly. The stunning visuals of the cityscape β€” the striking architecture, intricate streets and freeways, and illuminating lights β€” set up an almost futuristic atmosphere that offers a nice distraction when the narrative gets repetitive.

Despite its significant flaws β€” including a prolonged central case and an unconvincing romantic subplot β€” Mobius provided a passable viewing experience. The draggy pacing is offset by the engaging dynamic of Ding Qi's detective team and the urban cityscape cinematography. These were the very strengths that motivated me to complete the drama even when the repetitive time-loop mechanic wore thin. While it is certainly not a binge-worthy thriller for everyone, the drama’s visual style and likable characters make it potentially worthwhile for dedicated fans of Bai Jingting or time-loops.

Who run the world? GIRLS!

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not generally a fan of Cdramas, find their heroines a little too over the top. But this one was quite the revelation. It was all about women standing up for themselves, making a living and living a life of integrity, irrespective of whatever storms life throws at them. Standing at the helm of all the feminist struggle is the FL, Hua Zhi, played by Zhang Jingyi. It's nice to see that non-ke'ai female actors also exist in Chinese dramas. She did a really good job in portraying a headstrong, go-getter head of the family, whose ingenuity saves the day. However, she was a little too perfect, had no opposition from anyone at all (except the king), and pretty much won at everything in life. It makes sense, but yeah.. not the most relatable, everyday character you see on screen.
The ML was a contradiction. He had a screen presence, it was nice to see him fill the frame up with his TALL, gangly frame. But again, this is a guy who's supposed to be cold and emotionless, like a bodyguard or an assassin at best. Apart from his height and stony face, there was nothing else that could convince me that he's a scary figure. He looked too pretty to play the role of the Commander of Security Bureau. And after they showed his "softer", lover-boy side, believing him as a scary figure was just hilarious.
The rest of the side characters, aka members of the Hua family were also well fleshed out, each had a good story arc to them. But the best of all the women was the grandmother's character. Now she demanded attention on screen. Best character out of all, although she had an early exit.
The Emperor was the greyest figure of all, and even though his actions were villain-like, one could understand where his motivations were coming from. I loved his character; he commanded fear and respect. The actor did a good job. But the best (and the most underlying) part of the whole series, was the ML and the Emperor's relationship. Theirs was such a toxic filial relationship; I was always at crossroads, trying to root for either of the characters, but when the Emperor made sense, the ML didn't, and vice versa. Towards the end, when Yanxi says that he understands the Emperor, it didn't strike a chord with me, because I didn't see how the Emperor's actions were legit or necessary.

Overall, it was a neatly written, well-tied script, filled with ups and downs, good acting, and all for women power. Good watch!

Glorious Screwball Comedy

A true screwball comedy is rare in this world. It requires masterful acting to balance the physical and emotional comedy. Comedy is hard so the success of this show is a testament to the skill of the acting, especially Tan Jian Ci who manages to balance situations without letting it be overacting. He keeps the audience believing even when it is ridiculous. Landy Li does brilliantly moving between a range of characters in silly situations. She reminds me of Katherine Hepburn. The support characters are all clever and are well performed. The story develops with skill without breaking believability even when the audience in some part of their head knows this is too silly for words. I laughed so hard and I keep laughing.

Strong and amazing drama ans story

I like how they made a story to be not just any detective and coroner story but a meaningful and heartfelt one but the way they made Xiao Jin Yu's father death case is so puzzling and complicated...and they made him crippled with broken legs and still he was able to bury a eunuch in the wall and bring himself to the swamp...that's unbelievable if his legs were broken

So...way to toxic and loud bgm

I really wanted to love this drama because LMSY are very good actresses and have incredible chemistry, however the story was a complete mess. Firstly, Aiwarin's character did a whole 180. At the start of the series she literally sexually assaulted Mevika and it was supposed to be romantic?, I was supposed to like that?, like why are they romanticizing assault. Not to mention she also drugged her, but apperently everyone forgot about that bc it was never mentioned again. Then later around the 4th episode she was so inlove with her?, i honestly didn't understand when liking became love bc it was so rushed. It was never clear when they fell in love and watching it i felt like they didn't even like each other just using one another. Secondly, the bgm annoyed me so much bc it didn't match the scenes at all. The music was very thrilling and scary while the scenes were just drama, which made me want to watch it on mute. Therefore, I decided to drop it after the 6th episode it was way too toxic, rushed, annoying music and unlikable characters (also as I mentioned one of the other key reasons I stopped watching is bc to me they were not in love)

After all these points I would like to say that LMSY are very good actresses and it was visible even in this series.

Had potential

I think the story has potential to be a regular BL, sadly this short series wasn't as impressive as it could have been, had it been written more meticulously.

The cast is fine, chemistry isn't bad, acting also was acceptable, the direction however is all over the place, large portion of the draws revolves around Makoto and Yuki in a very unentertaining way, we get to see only a couple of scenes that actually shows the two leads communicating together, bear in mind that the whole plot is about two lost souls finding solace in eachother so if you didn't show that, then you missed the whole point.

As I said it needed some polishing and proper script, maybe a more experienced actors too, but overall it was a nice watch ~

Tense, Heartbreaking, Park Hoon Steals the Show

Nobody Knows is a gripping, emotionally charged drama that explores hidden secrets, moral ambiguity, and the fragility of trust. Park Hoon delivers a career-defining performance, imbuing his character with quiet intensity and subtle emotional depth. Every glance and gesture carries weight, making his portrayal both compelling and deeply human. His presence elevates the entire series, turning complex, often dark situations into moments of poignant realism. A must-watch for fans of nuanced acting and psychologically rich storytelling.

A Dark, Relentless Portrait of Trauma – Kim Sung Kyu Shines

The King of Pigs is an unflinching exploration of social hierarchies, childhood trauma, and the enduring scars of violence. Unlike conventional dramas, it refuses to simplify its characters or offer easy resolutions. Every scene drips with tension and moral ambiguity, creating a world that is raw, uncomfortable, and hauntingly real.

Kim Sung Kyu delivers a performance of extraordinary depth. His portrayal captures the subtle shifts between vulnerability and suppressed anger, making his character both sympathetic and terrifyingly complex. He carries the emotional weight of the narrative, bringing an intensity that is both gripping and devastating. Watching him navigate the psychological intricacies of the story is a masterclass in understated, yet powerful acting.

This is not a drama for casual viewing, but for those who appreciate profound storytelling and performances that linger long after the screen goes dark, The King of Pigs is unforgettable. Kim Sung Kyu, in particular, elevates the film to an artful meditation on human cruelty, survival, and the indelible marks of the past.

Girl Power!

a must see drama?????????????? Its in budget based on the costumes and the mansions. nicely edited scenes, not too perfect but decent. Story has a touch of fantasy, good wuxia, romantic comedy, with the right amount of seriousness . It talks about a girl who has many failed engagements, but never waiver from her strong, brutally honest personality, who also had visions of her future shown in her dreams. Story is not too complicated. Easy to get yourself hooked with many fluffy scenes and a considerate amount of revenge-hate-schemes. Is has many twist and turns even right through the last episode. Actjng: spot on, FL did justice to her role. ML was also able to deliver what the role ask him to portray. Chemistry between the fl and ml was evident all thought out the drama.
